But the townspeople take him prisoner. They lower him into the sand-pit home of
a young widow, a pariah in the poor community, who the villagers have condemned
to a life of shoveling back the ever-encroaching dunes that threaten to bury the

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Kobo Abe was born in Tokyo in 1924 and grew up in Mukden, Manchuria, during
World War II. In 1948 he received a medical degree from Tokyo Imperial
University, but he never practiced medicine. Considered one of Japan’s foremost
novelists, his most famous works include The Face of Another (1964), The Box Man
(1973), Secret Rendezvous (1977), and The Ark Sakura (1984). All of Abe’s books
have been bestsellers in Japan and he was the recipient of numerous literary
awards and prizes, including the Yomiuri Prize for The Woman in the Dunes in
1962. He collaborated with director Hiroshi Teshigahara on film adaptations of
four of his novels—including The Woman in the Dunes—and was also widely known as
a dramatist. He died in 1993.

I just got it and there is like an oil stain on the book makes some of the pages
see through. And the oily parts smell. There was this yellow looking string that
made the pages stick together. Other than that I can't wait to read it.

An important image in THE WOMAN IN THE DUNES is the Mobius strip, which,
Wikipedia says, is formed by "taking a paper strip, giving it a half-twist, and
then joining the ends of the strip together to form a loop... If an ant were to
crawl along the length of this strip, it would return to its starting point
having traversed the entire length of the strip (on both sides of the original
paper) without ever crossing an edge."
This, in a fashion, represents the experience of Niki Jumpei, a teacher, an
amateur entomologist, and the protagonist of TWitD, whose life is turned
inside-out during an innocent beetle-hunting vacation in a remote and sandy
village near the sea. Needing a place to stay overnight, the villagers find Niki
accommodations in a woman's house that is at the bottom of a sixty-foot hole in
the sand dunes. The next day, the villagers refuse to let Niki leave this hole
and a battle for his soul commences. Here, the repressed and unattached Niki,
who is, in part, fleeing his girlfriend, insists on his freedom. But he also
gradually develops sexual and emotional rapport with the woman in the dunes and
finds that her futile work--removing sand from her relentlessly refilling
hole--does provide a dependable and not unpleasant method for passing time.
Eventually, Niki's experience in the hole yields ironic victory. But victory
only occurs because of luck, his abiding interest in science, the woman's
insistence on respectability, and his faint but enduring hope of escape.
In TWitD, Abe makes the case that family and community are more significant to a
full life than work and involvement in the everyday world. This certainly is the
message of Niki's story. Still, the most overt statement of this point of view
comes as Niki reads the headlines of a newspaper. "Corporation Tax Bribery
Spreads to City Officials... College Towns Become Industrial Meccas...New Mode
of Life Breeds New Crime... Stock Prices Feel Autumn Winds... Rioting Again in
Union of South Africa... There wasn't a single item of importance. A tower of
illusion, all of it, made of illusory bricks and full of holes.... But everyday
life was exactly like the headlines. And so everybody, knowing the meaningless
of existence, sets the center of his compass at his own home."
For me, TWitD was not a fun read. This is because Niki, when he enters the
dunes, is an implausible neurotic and more concept than person. But the novel
gains with reflection and many of its observations about sand, which provides a
Sisyphean dimension to its characters' lives, are strangely interesting. Here's
a few:
o "Air or water currents set up a turbulence. The smallest wavelength of this
turbulent flow is about equal to the diameter of the desert sand. Owing to this
peculiarity, only sand is extracted from the soil... If the cohesion of the soil
is weak, the sand is sucked into the air."
o "Because winds and water currents flow over the land, the formation of sand is
unavoidable. As long as the winds blew, the rivers flowed, and the seas stirred,
sand would be born grain by grain from the earth, and like a living being it
would creep everywhere. Sand never rested."
o "The barrenness of sand... was not caused by simple dryness, but apparently
was due to the ceaseless movement that made it inhospitable to all living
things. What a difference compared with the dreary way human beings clung
together year in year out."

Kobo Abe (1924 -1993); his given name was Kimifusa which with a Chinese type
pronunciation became Kobo. Abe's father was a physician and Abe trained as a
physician, although he never became a doctor but instead pursued writing and a
keen interest in entomology. In 1951, Abe received the most important Japanese
literary prize, the Akutagawa Award, for his novel The Crime of Mr. S. Karuma.
In 1960 his novel The Woman in the Dunes won the Yomiuri Prize for Literature.
It was made into a film by Hiroshi Teshigahara in 1963 and won the jury prize at
the Cannes Film Festival. Abe dedicated most of his later career to writing
plays and directing his own theatre troupe in Tokyo until his death in 1993.
The story of The Woman in the Dunes is told by an anonymous narrator. The
writing is straight forward and not complex in its construction. The details of
the tale are at times interwoven with philosophical musing, a result of the
plight of the protagonist as he would see it and something that leads the reader
to witness all the steps taken by the protagonist to rationalize his situation.
This aspect of the writing appears to be aesthetically polarizing; some will
like it but not quite know why, and some will dislike it and not quite know why.
Identification is another role that seemingly plays out in Abe's work; many a
reader will find resemblances to the hapless insect collector and his doomed
life of repetitively performing a monotonous activity. In many ways Abe's
composition examines the stages of psychosis of the imprisoned; captives who
first find their circumstances unreasonable and who linger over the injustice
with only thoughts of escape - finally to eventually accept their plight,
adjusting their image of circumstances to reflect normalcy, even feeling
friendship to their captors as time goes on and escape becomes hopeless.
The tale itself is about a young teacher, an amateur entomologist, who departs
one day for an outing to a sea side area of the country in search of a
particular beetle that he believes he will find in the sand dunes there. As the
story unfolds, we find the hapless young man encountering the inhabitants of a
strange village built in the sands, whereupon he is unwittingly deceived into
being lowered to a house, occupied by a lone woman, at the bottom of a sand
basin; he soon realizes there is no subsequent escape and that the ever falling
sand must be shoveled into containers for removal each day lest it overtake and
bury the house and its inhabitants.
I had mixed emotions about Kobo Abe's work. I liked the emotional tenseness
produced of the circumstances of unjust captivity, but at the same time, I felt
the strangeness of the environment to make the composition seem otherworldly.
Further, I didn't always appreciate the musing provided by the protagonist - it
seemed detached. As to the character of the protagonist, he also was a strange
one, for he seemed to be quite intelligent and inventive, yet clumsy and inept
at the same time; the dichotomy was exasperating especially because it foiled
his escape.
All in all, I liked the story of The Woman in the Dunes in spite of some of the
bothersome aspects.
I would recommend you add this novel to your reading list and rate it
"Pleasurable-not memorable".

A disturbing allegory by a highly talented author. The text reads like a
nightmare but the plot is skilfully arranged to keep the reader riveted to the
plight of the protagonist. The constant - and ultimately futile - effort needed
to clear the perpetually encroaching sand from the central character's
environment is convincingly portrayed as a lifelong struggle against the
inevitable. Not an easy read, but one very well worthwhile.

I can't get enough of Kobo Abe, following reading the boxman I decided to give
this a go. Coincidentaly I watched 'The Cloud Atlas', recently which has many
similarities, although this is a much starker version. A book that questions why
we do what we do in a kafkaesque manner, 'The Castle', with beautiful similies
along the lines of Omar Khayyam.

This novel seemed tedious and repetitive and then I realized that was the
authors intent.
This is not the best novel you will ever read, but you will probably find that
you think about it for days.
