THE FLASH’S BABY SHOWER FAILS TO BE DC’S QUICKSILVER MOMENT

By Nicolas Ayala
Published 14 hours ago

The Flash's "baby shower" scene struggles to match the realism and excitement of
Quicksilver's slow-motion super speed sequences in the X-Men movies.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The FlashThe "baby shower" scene from
The Flash is similar to Quicksilver's super speed scenes in Fox's X-Men
franchise, but it fails to match their quality. From phasing to electricity
manipulation, Ezra Miller's Barry Allen has developed various new Speed Force
abilities that showcase his command over the Speed Force. Clearly, pushing
people and running away is a thing of the past. The Flash is now able to pull
off previously unthinkable feats like saving several free-falling babies and a
dog from a collapsing building in a matter of seconds.

The Flash's baby-saving stunt has plenty of similarities to Quicksilver's
slow-motion scenes in the X-Men movies, particularly the one in X-Men:
Apocalypse, where Evan Peters' Quicksilver casually saves all the students (and
a dog) from the exploding X-mansion in less than a second. Before that, Peter
Maximoff had stolen the show in X-Men: Days of Future Past, where he beat an
entire room full of guards almost instantly. The quality level between the super
speed scenes in the X-Men movies and the ones in The Flash, however, is quite
drastic.

THE FLASH'S BABY SHOWER SCENE CGI DOESN'T LOOK GOOD

As thrilling as the idea seems on paper, the literal "baby shower" scene is one
of The Flash many rough VFX-heavy sequences in the movie. Although the
plastic-looking appearances of The Flash's multiversal cameo characters can be
explained by the Speed Force's ethereal nature, there's no excuse for the visual
quality in The Flash's first action sequence. All the babies look like soft
silicon dolls with strange facial expressions, and they look much older than
they should be. Even after the slow-motion scene is over, the babies on the
stretcher seem like puppets or holographic replicas.

Released nine and seven years earlier than The Flash, respectively, X-Men: Days
of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse feature more realistic VFX shots during
Quicksilver's slow-motion super speed scenes. Every character and object Evan
Peters' X-Men Quicksilver touches reacts according to his changing speed. Hair,
clothes, and skin ripple and stretch in response to his supersonic touch and
liquid droplets move consistently while Quicksilver runs across them. The X-Men
movies even show off their VFX quality by featuring a wide array of materials
such as fire, paper, stone, wood, metal, and water all within the same shot —
and all of them seem tangible throughout the entire scenes.

X-MEN'S QUICKSILVER SCENES WERE BETTER SPEEDSTER MOMENTS

On top of The Flash's poor VFX quality, the "baby shower" scene pales in
comparison to Quicksilver's slow-motion scenes in the X-Men movies in terms of
pacing, creativity, and clarity. In The Flash, it takes a while to decipher
Barry Allen's plan. After refueling his energy by eating from a vending machine,
Barry kicks off a chain reaction that saves the babies from dangerous falling
objects and places them on a stretcher. In the X-Men movies, Quicksilver finds a
unique way to defeat every guard and save every person from the exploding
mansion, and he even tastes soup, plays darts, drinks soda, gives someone a
wedgie, moonwalks — and of course, listens to music all throughout.

The Flash's "baby shower" scene struggles to match the quality of Quicksilver's
standout scenes from X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. However,
they don't fully detract from Barry Allen's story. Flash's teamwork with Batman
and Wonder Woman marks one of the few times the DCEU featured the now-absent
Justice League in a mission after the team's creation, and it proves just how
far Barry Allen has come since he fought Parademons under Batman's wing. But
whenever Flash returns in a future movie, whether played by Ezra Miller or not,
the new DC Universe may have to find more creative and more visually stunning
ways to depict his super speed.
