RODRI VS FABINHO VS KANTE VS RICE: WHO IS THE PREMIER LEAGUE’S BEST DEFENSIVE
MIDFIELDER?

Rodri, Fabinho, N'Golo Kante and Declan Rice are the four best defensive
midfielders in the Premier League right now.

Ok, so there’s room for debate there, but we feel pretty confident in saying
that the likes of Douglas Luiz, Wilfred Ndidi and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg fall
short of the top-table quartet as things stand.

Rodri is quietly going about his business as one of world football’s most
underrated players, while Rice is proving week in, week out that a move to a
Champions League club is what he deserves.

Rodri vs Fabinho vs Kante vs Rice

Meanwhile, Kante thrust himself into Ballon d'Or contention with his 2021
performances and Fabinho seldom goes a game without consolidating his status as
one of Liverpool’s top performers.

So, all that considered, even if you’re a little outraged to see Rice rubbing
shoulders with Kante, we can surely agree with relative certainty that these
four players are the best in their roles right now.

However, here at GIVEMESPORT, we didn’t just want to end things there because
the Premier League’s winter break has allowed us to take a closer and more
statistical look at the quartet.

Statistical comparison

And having already looked into the division’s finest centre-backs and full-backs
using Squawka’s comparison matrix, we’re once again using its data to settle
another hot debate in English football.

We’ve chosen 35 statistics that show off different qualities in central
defensive midfielders and tallied up who out of Kante, Rodri, Fabinho and Rice
comes out on top in the greatest number of metrics.

The statistics in question are:

Who comes out on top?

Data is taken from Premier League games this season and we ran the test through
the ‘per 90 minutes’ filter to ensure that players didn’t get an easier ride if
they had amassed more minutes.

So, without further ado, be sure to check out who the stats suggest is the
Premier League’s best defensive midfielder right now by checking out who was the
darling of the data down below:

1. Rodri - 12.5

2. N'Golo Kante - 10.5

3. Declan Rice - 6.5

4. Fabinho - 5.5

Rodri takes the victory

There you have it, the data suggests that - if nothing else - Rodri has been the
Premier League’s most complete defensive midfielder across the 2021/22 season so
far.

The Manchester City stalwart came out on top for chances created, passing
accuracy, aerial duels won, clean sheets and much more to reiterate his status
as one of the world’s best in his position.

However, the fact that Kante was breathing down his neck on the back of
victories in metrics like ground duels won, take-ons completed and tackles made
really goes to show his unending quality.

Besides, the Chelsea hero has had a relatively quiet season by his standards,
but continues to produce the sort of eye-watering numbers that sees him getting
the better of Rice and Fabinho.

Speaking of which, the West Ham United and Liverpool aces shouldn’t feel too
dismayed when you consider the level of competition and it’s not as though they
were completely whitewashed.

Perhaps it just goes to show that Fabinho isn’t enjoying his finest season at
Anfield and that Rice still has a little way to go before he can truly compete
for the CDM throne in the Premier League.

CHELSEA MUST MAKE SERGIO AGUERO TRANSFER DECISION TO HELP THOMAS TUCHEL WIN
PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE

Pep Guardiola stood with tears in his eyes on the confetti-strewn pitch at the
Etihad Stadium. He had minutes earlier watched his Manchester City players
jubilantly lift the Premier League trophy but there was also a reason for great
sadness.

It would be the last time Sergio Aguero would represent the club in Manchester.
Their all-time top scorer, a man who helped transform City into a dominant
Premier League force, was to leave at the end of his contract.

That wasn’t the Argentine’s decision. The choice was made for him by the City
hierarchy and Guardiola. It felt ruthless, cold given all Aguero had achieved,
but there was no going back.

Still, Guardiola felt hugely emotional when the day finally came for Aguero to
say goodbye to City’s supporters and staff at the Etihad. “We love him so much.
He’s a special person for all of us,” the Catalan coach said as he held back his
tears.

“He’s so nice, so nice. He helped me a lot. We cannot replace him…we cannot.
There are many players that this club have had - Joe Hart, David Silva helped
this club to be what it is. And he showed his quality in 20 minutes [on his
debut with two goals].”

Guardiola was largely true to his word. City didn’t replace Aguero, not directly
at least, in the summer. They instead committed £100million on Jack Grealish and
backed their array of attacking talents to fill the goalscoring void left by the
Argentine international, who would go on to join Barcelona before being forced
to retire in December due to a heart condition.

City haven’t missed Aguero, not on the pitch at least. In the Premier League,
they are top once again and sit nine points ahead of Liverpool in second.
Guardiola has also guided his side into the Champions League knockout stage and
will attempt to win the FA Cup.

City have become a relentless winning machine since Guardiola’s appointment.
They’re almost robotically efficient and can seemingly win games on pure muscle
memory alone. That has been made possible through shrewd transfer decisions and
elite coaching – the squad is perfectly suited to their head coach’s demands.

Difficult calls have been made along the way: Aguero isn’t the only club legend
to have been let go under Guardiola, Vincent Kompany and David Silva walked out
the door too.

PEP GUARDIOLA REVEALS THOUGHTS ON CHELSEA’S GAME PLAN AHEAD OF PREMIER LEAGUE
CLASH

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed what he believes Chelsea’s
game plan will be when the two meet on Saturday for their Premier League lunch
time kick off fixture.

Guardiola’s side are currently sat comfortably at the top of the Premier League
with 10 points more than Thomas Tuchel’s boys in second place.

However, Chelsea have won two of their last three fixtures against Manchester
City, one of which was in the Champions League final.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash, Guardiola
revealed his thoughts on what kind of Chelsea he was expecting on the weekend.

“If he (Thomas Tuchel) didn’t like the way they played at home, they will play a
different way.

"I saw in the last games, completely different to how they played at Stamford
Bridge (vs Man City).

"I don’t know if the plan was like this or if they could not play differently.”

Guardiola got the better of Tuchel the first time the two sides met earlier this
season in September when a Gabriel Jesus goal gave the away side the victory.

is time, the Blues will travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City in front
of their home fans and Tuchel will be desperate to get a win and hold onto his
second place spot.

Coming off the back of two straight-forward wins over Tottenham in the Carabao
Cup semi-final, as well as a 5-1 win over Chesterfield in the FA Cup, Tuchel’s
boys are in good form as it stands and they will hope to continue that come
Saturday.

UNITED SECURED A 3-1 WIN OVER BURNLEY ON THURSDAY NIGHT

Premier League legend Thierry Henry has told Manchester United boss Ralf
Rangnick which players can “take credit” for the side’s improved form lately.

United secured a 3-1 win over Burnley on Thursday night thanks to goals from
Scott McTominay and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with a deflected Ben Mee own goal
from Jadon Sancho’s effort.

The goals and United’s tactical set-up were among a number of talking points for
the Red Devils, while pundit Thierry Henry pointed out the players who have
improved of late under new interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

It comes after Rangnick was sent a message about his midfielders ahead of the
Premier League encounter that certain players are “not good enough”.

Burnley talking points

It was a much-improved performance from United as they beat Burnley 3-1 on
Thursday night.

Ralf Rangnick’s side had struggled to a 1-1 draw with Premier League strugglers
Newcastle United earlier in the week but the Red Devils shook that performance
off to register a win in their final game of 2021.

Midfielder Scott McTominay, who scored a sublime curling effort in the first
half, was one of the big talking points in midfield for United, as were
Rangnick’s decisions on his starting line-up.

But there were plenty of others as well and Mirror Football has all of the
action points from the game.

Rangnick sent message

Scott McTominay and Fred are “not good enough” for Manchester United, it has
been claimed.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has sent a message to Ralf Rangnick about the
midfield duo, who he believes are a large reason for the club’s struggles this
season.

Nicol told ESPN FC : “Look at the middle of the park, who’s going to have Fred
and McTominay in their team? Of the good sides, none of them.”

Nicol also picked apart the players’ games as he pointed out why United are
struggling both in attack and defence.

FC BARCELONA SIGNS FERRAN TORRES

Club reaches agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of the striker on a
five year deal until 2027

FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of
Ferran Torres.

The player has signed a contract for the next five seasons, until 30 June 2027,
and his buyout clause has been set at 1 billion euros.

On Monday 3 January, from 11.00am CET, the player’s presentation as a new member
of the FC Barcelona first team squad will take place in a event preceding the
open doors training session at 12.00pm CET at Camp Nou. Following the training
session, Ferran Torres will appear before the media in a remote press conference
at the Ricard Maxenchs press room.

The event will be broadcast on Barça TV+ and also the FC Barcelona official
digital channels from 10.30am CET.

Young focus

Born on 29 February 2000 in Foios (Valencia), Ferran Torres made first contact
with the ball at an early age. He started out with futsal at the EPLA school and
then attracted the attention of the Valencia CF academy. He was only seven years
when he wore the shirt for the first time.

From there his rise was meteoric. In what seems like a flick of an eye he had
advanced from all the way to the Valencia first team and made his Liga debut on
16 December 2017 against Eibar, in doing so becoming the first player born this
century to appear in the competition. But he had already made his official debut
a few days earlier on November 30 in a Copa del Rey game against Zaragoza.

His greatest success at Valencia was the 2018/19 Copa del Rey, when the team
beat Barça in the final in which his team won its first major trophy since 2008.

From Valencia to Manchester City

His fine season attracted the attention of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola.
After a whole life at Valencia, Ferran moved to the Premier League, and also
from winger to centre forward. It was in England that he became famed as a
goalscorer, with 11 goals in 30 games in his first season, 2020/21, in which the
Sky Blues won the league and the League Cup.

He began his second season with the Citizens, 2021/22, with four appearances and
two goals.

Ferran Torres soon adapted to life in the footballing elite, and played a bigger
and bigger role in the team with every season. In the second half of the 2017/18
season, and then full years in 2018/19 and 2019/20, he made 97 appearances and
scored nine goals.

Playing for Spain

His first major achievement as an international was victory in the U17 European
Championship. It wouldn’t be long before he was getting his first full
international call-up, and he is now very much one of Luis Enrique’s strongest
weapons in attack.

JACK GREALISH: PEP GUARDIOLA WOULD HAVE LOVED STEPHEN IRELAND

COULD STEPHEN IRELAND HAVE PLAYED IN PEP GUARDIOLA’S MANCHESTER CITY TEAM?

That is the question put to Jack Grealish at the end of the new CITY+ feature
film chronicling Ireland’s time at the Club and the England international’s
response is unequivocal.

Grealish is certain that Ireland, with his touch, vision and tireless work rate,
is a player Guardiola would have loved to have worked with.

“Of course, 100%,” City’s No.10 replies when asked in the final moments of
Ireland is Superman.

“He is so technically gifted, Pep would obviously love him. Playing in this team
is a pleasure to do for me personally and I am sure Stevie Ireland would love to
be involved in it.”

It is a sign of the high esteem in which Ireland is held at the Etihad Stadium
that such a question is even discussed in CITY+’s latest offering.

In the years immediately before City established itself at the top table of
European football, the Academy graduate from the Republic of Ireland was one of
the Club’s most popular and influential players.

A mercurial talent, he reached his peak in 2008-09, scoring 13 times in 50
matches across all competitions and was immortalised in City folklore with the
terrace chant from which the film takes its title after dropping his shorts to
reveal Superman underpants following a goal against Sunderland.

Ireland made 175 appearances in total, before leaving for Aston Villa in 2010,
where his natural ability and dedicated approach made him the ideal role model
for future City playmaker Grealish, who was coming through Villa’s academy at
the time.

The two remain in contact today and Ireland shared the delight of all City fans
when the 26-year-old arrived at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

“There are so many players that we have both played with that say he is the best
trainer out of everyone I’ve seen,” he added.

“As soon as there was talk that he was going to sign for Villa, it was big.

“At the time I was a No.10 coming through at Villa, so he was someone I really
looked up to. He always gave us good information and he was good with the young
lads.

“I still speak to him now a fair bit and he was happy when I signed here because
he sent me a lovely message.”

Ireland is Superman is available to watch now on CITY+ and features
contributions from Grealish, Elano, Nedum Onuoha, Esme Morgan and, of course,
the man himself.

CITY’S INCREDIBLE PREMIER LEAGUE STATS OF 2021/22 SO FAR

Manchester City have enjoyed a hugely impressive first half of the 2021/22
Premier League campaign.

With 20 games of the season already gone, Pep Guardiola’s men sit eight points
clear at the top of the table as the new year approaches.

Our last league defeat came two months ago, and we have claimed statement wins
away to Chelsea and Manchester United as well as a deserved draw at Liverpool
already.

There is still a long way to go, but it’s a case of ‘so far, so good’ in our
defence of the Premier League crown, with some incredible statistics in tow to
back up that claim.

Below, you can find some of the numbers behind our success so far this season
and how we also compare to our nearest rivals.

STRONG START

City have picked up maximum points in 16 of our 20 Premier League matches so far
this season, equating to a phenomenal win percentage of 80%.

Our nearest rivals in this category are Liverpool, who have won 63% of their 19
league games in 2021/22.

Guardiola’s men have claimed 50 Premier League points from a possible 60 on
offer over the first five months of the campaign and boast a 100% record across
both November and December.

Only in our 2017/18 Centurions campaign have we enjoyed a better record after 20
matches, and just three other sides in Premier League history have earned more
than our points haul of 50 by this stage in the season (Chelsea in 2005/06 and
Liverpool in both 2018/19 and 2019/20).

GOAL SHARE

So far, 16 different members of Pep Guardiola’s squad have found the back of the
net in the Premier League this season.

Only Chelsea can match that record, while West Ham and Liverpool boast 14
different scorers since the opening day of the season.

Of outfield players to make at least five appearances for the Club in the
Premier League this term, only Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kyle Walker are yet to
find the net.

It’s a phenomenal statistic which yet again demonstrates the importance of the
collective in City’s success.

TAKING THE LEAD

Seeing out results from winning positions is crucial for any title-challenging
team, and City have demonstrated this on a ruthlessly consistent basis across
2021/22.

Guardiola’s men have taken the lead on 16 occasions so far this season and,
incredibly, have gone on to win all 16 matches, picking up all 48 points
available.

Only Norwich City have been able to match the feat in the Premier League,
claiming victory in both of the games in which they have gone ahead, while only
Chelsea (17) and Liverpool (16) can better or match the number of times we have
taken the lead this season.

However, both are unable to emulate our 100% record, with Chelsea going on to
draw four and lose one match from a winning position, while Liverpool have
ultimately surrendered their lead on four occasions, including in our 2-2 draw
at Anfield in October.

PERFECT 10

Victory away to Brentford on Wednesday evening represented City’s tenth in
succession, the best winning run in the Premier League so far this season.

Only 16 teams have previously reached the milestone since 1992, while it’s the
fourth occasion we have achieved ten in a row under the guidance of Pep
Guardiola.

The Catalan aside, no other manager in Premier League history has had more than
two separate runs of 10+ wins.

AVERAGE POSSESSION

City also lead the way when it comes to possession stats over the opening 20
matches of the current Premier League campaign.

Guardiola’s men have enjoyed 67.4% possession in our 20 games across 2021/22,
with Liverpool the only other side with more than 60% on average (63.04).

It’s been a similar story on an individual basis, with an astonishing four of
the top five players in the Premier League with the highest passing figures
plying their trade for City.

Joao Cancelo’s total of 1,605 passes is better than any other player in the
English top flight this season, and he’s joined by teammates Ruben Dias (1,470),
Aymeric Laporte (1,356) and Rodrigo (1,320) in the top five.

Only Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger (1,327) breaks our stranglehold, but Bernardo
Silva’s haul of 1,085 also sees him comfortably inside the top 20.

It’s a similar story in terms of touches, with Cancelo once again leading the
way with 2,075 – over 400 more than his closest rival in Liverpool’s Trent
Alexander-Arnold - while Dias (1,624), Rodrigo (1,497) and Laporte (1,478) also
all feature in the top six.

DEFENSIVE RECORD

While City’s sumptuous attacking play has rightly earned plaudits so far this
season, our defensive record has been equally impressive.

Guardiola’s men boast the meanest defence in the Premier League across 2021/22,
conceding just 12 times in 20 matches so far.

We have kept the most clean sheets in the English top flight heading into 2022
as well, with Zack Steffen’s accomplished performance in our 2-0 win over
Burnley adding to Ederson’s personal haul of 11.

The Brazilian, who has earned the most shut outs across each of the past two
Premier League seasons, is on course to maintain his Golden Glove title once
again with his nearest rivals coming in the form of Liverpool’s Alisson and
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale (both on 9 clean sheets).

PREMIER LEAGUE HITS AND MISSES: MOHAMED SALAH’S STRUGGLE SUMS UP LIVERPOOL’S
SHOCK DEFEAT TO LEICESTER

So when Mohamed Salah stepped up to take an early penalty he himself had won, it
seemed the script for a game which pitted the Premier League’s most prolific
attack against one of its more porous - and injury-hit - defences was already
written.

But Salah, the Premier League’s top scorer and a man who had converted his last
15 consecutive spot-kicks in the competition, instead saw his
uncharacteristically tame effort repelled by Kasper Schmeichel before heading
the rebound against the crossbar.

Leicester harnessed the power of that moment, holding firm against sustained
Liverpool pressure before substitute Ademola Lookman’s second-half winner, while
on the other side Salah wilted.

The Egyptian has been irrepressible all season but his penalty miss knocked him
off his stride at the King Power Stadium. In the first half, sloppy touches
crept into his game. In the second, there were over-hit passes and misdirected
efforts on goal.

Salah, who will soon join up with his country for the African Cup of Nations,
was not the only one to spurn opportunities. Sadio Mane missed a gilt-edged
one-on-one chance. Diogo Jota headed wide when he should have hit the target.
But it was Salah’s struggles that best summed up Liverpool’s night.

The defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side six points behind Premier League leaders
Manchester City, who had put six goals past the same opponent only 48 hours
earlier at the Etihad Stadium.

It seemed Liverpool might rack up a similar total against Leicester’s makeshift
defence when Salah started his run-up. At that moment, however, the script was
torn up and a new one was written.

PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM OF THE SEASON SO FAR

With the 2021-22 campaign set to reach its halfway mark on Sunday, GOAL selects
the players who have caught the eye most so far.

GK: Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Most onlookers need to apologise to Aaron Ramsdale, who after conceding 130
goals across two seasons at Bournemouth and Sheffield United seemed over-priced
at £24 million ($32.6m).

The 23-year-old has, however, been magnificent for Mikel Arteta this season,
laying the foundation for Arsenal’s improved performances with his exceptional
distribution and all-action playing style.

The Gunners have lacked leadership in recent seasons, but Ramsdale’s
heart-on-the-sleeve demeanour has certainly given them a lift.

He is a very good shot-stopper, too, pulling off several remarkable saves, most
notably keeping out a James Maddison free-kick against Leicester City with an
effort that looks destined to win save of the season.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

It is impossible to ignore the Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose eight Premier
League assists this season is only bettered by team-mate Mohamed Salah.

The Liverpool full-back somehow keeps finding new levels and new ways to
impress, with his thunderous goal against Newcastle in mid-December highlighting
yet another string to his bow.

Jurgen Klopp increasingly lets Alexander-Arnold play in central areas, and the
23-year-old is just as often found in the right half-space as on the wing.

He defines the modern full-back: a playmaker as intelligent and creative as any
number 10.

CB: Ruben Dias (Manchester City)

Ruben Dias, last year’s Premier League Player of the Season, has picked up where
he left off, putting in immaculate performances for Manchester City and
contributing signficantly to thier goals against tally of just nine.

Although Dias does not score highly on defensive metrics, that is simply a
reflection of how much possession City hold - and indeed his on-the-ball
contribution is just as important as his effortless defending when called upon.

Perhaps the biggest compliment of all is that Dias has started 16 of City’s 18
Premier League games. Pep Guardiola tends to anxiously rotate centre-backs, but
not Dias.

CB: Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea)

Chelsea’s defensive record has improved markedly this season, and Antonio
Rudiger is undoubtedly the leader of Thomas Tuchel’s three-man back line.

The 28-year-old has grown in stature over the last 12 months to become one of
the most commanding figures in the division, making heroic blocks and last-ditch
challenges to get his team-mates out of trouble.

But the main reason he makes the list is his unique ability to dribble the ball
out of defence, breaking the opposition lines and joining up with the Chelsea
attack.

Rudiger ranks fourth in the entire division for carries (939) and ranks first
among centre-backs for carries into the final third (36).

LB: Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

Joao Cancelo has been unplayable this season.

In the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City full-back has stepped
into a creative role through central midfield, dancing across the width of the
pitch and popping up to assist or score in the same areas as the Belgium
international.

Implausibly, Pep Guardiola’s left-back runs the game. Nobody in the Premier
League has played more passes than Cancelo (1407), who has also amassed five
direct goal contributions this season, and the 27-year-old is just as good at
the defensive side of the game.

For example, he completes more combined tackles and interceptions (4.1 per game)
than any other City player.

CM: Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)

Arguably the best player not called Mohamed Salah in the Premier League right
now, Bernardo Silva plays with a grace and subtlety to match pretty much
anything the competition has seen before.

The Portugal international slaloms through the lines, connecting Manchester
City’s powerful defensive base with the forwards, acting as Pep Guardiola’s
Andres Iniesta at the Etihad Stadium.

Seven league goals in the first half of the campaign is already his best-ever
return in a City shirt, and although Bernardo has only assisted once, the stats
do not capture just how much work he does in setting the tempo and driving City
forward.

CM: Declan Rice (West Ham)

West Ham’s fantastic campaign would not be possible without their linchpin in
midfield; without a genuinely world-class footballer controlling the game at
both ends of the pitch.

Declan Rice just keeps getting better and better, evolving this season from a
defensive blocker into an astute passer and dribbler.

It will not be long before the 22-year-old is playing for one of the biggest
clubs in the world, and at that point he will finally get the credit he
deserves.

Rice is already one of the best midfielders around.

CM: Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace)

The breakout star of the season, on-loan Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has
not put a foot wrong at Crystal Palace, despite Patrick Vieira’s side slipping
into the bottom half of the table recently.

Gallagher’s six goals and three assists puts him firmly in the Premier League’s
top 10 for direct goal contributions, despite the fact that most of his work is
not done in the final third.

The 21-year-old is a superb box-to-box engine, tearing into challenges and
making a nuisance of himself to great effect in the Palace midfield.

As such, it looks as though Gallagher will be walking into the Chelsea first
team next season.

RW: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

This one hardly needs explaining.

Nobody thought Mohamed Salah would ever top his 32-goal season in 2017-18, and
yet the Egypt star is on course to do just that, scoring 15 and assisting nine
in just under half a season.

He is quite simply at Lionel Messi levels right now, cutting through opposition
defences to score pivotal goals out of nothing – and turning average Liverpool
performances into victories in the process.

Salah’s ludicrous solo strikes against Manchester City and Watford, scored in
consecutive games, summed him up. He is in a world of his own right now.

LW: Raphinha (Leeds United)

Leeds United are enduring a difficult second season in the top flight, partly
because of injuries and partly a natural regression to the mean; Marcelo Bielsa
is a victim of his own success.

They would be in considerably more trouble, however, if it was not for Raphinha,
whose goals, assists, and all-round attacking play have single-handedly pulled
Leeds through matches.

His impact is similar to Jack Grealish’s over the last two seasons at Aston
Villa, in that Leeds’ plan is increasingly just to give the ball to Raphinha and
let him weave his magic.

More often than not, it works.

ST: Emmanuel Dennis (Watford)

It might seem strange to fill one of the forward slots with a player battling
relegation, but the fact Emmanuel Dennis plays for Watford makes his tally of
seven goals and five assists all the more remarkable.

He is fourth in the Premier League for direct goal contributions, with the three
above him in the rankings all Liverpool players.

The 24-year-old, signed in the summer from Club Brugge, has taken to the English
game like a duck to water.

Watford would be lost without his clinical touch in the final third, which has
hidden some abject performances and dragged Claudio Ranieri’s side out of the
bottom three.
