Top Prev Next Click here for Your Feedback RBI cautions against frauds in name of KYC updation In the wake of continuing incidents/ reports of customers falling prey to frauds being perpetrated in the name of KYC updation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has again urged the members of public to exercise caution and due care to prevent loss and safeguard themselves from such malicious practices. The modus operandi for such frauds usually involves customers receiving unsolicited communications, including phone calls/SMS/emails, through which they are manipulated into revealing personal information, account/login details, or installing unauthorised or unverified apps through links provided in the messages. Such communications often employ tactics of creating a false urgency and threatening of account freezing/blocking/closure, if the customer fails to comply. When customers share essential personal or login details, fraudsters gain unauthorised access to their accounts and engage in fraudulent activities. In case of financial cyber frauds, members of the public should immediately lodge a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or through cybercrime helpline (1930). Further, in order to safeguard themselves, members of public are encouraged to adopt the following measures: Do’s • In the event of receiving any request for KYC updation, directly contact their bank/ financial institution for confirmation/ assistance. • Obtain contact number/ customer care phone number of the bank/ financial institution only through its official website/ sources. • Inform their bank/ financial institution immediately in case of any cyber fraud incident. • Enquire with their bank branch to ascertain available modes/ options for updating KYC details. • For more details or additional information on the requirements and channels for updation/periodic updation of KYC, please read paragraph 38 of the RBI Master Direction on KYC dated February 25, 2016, as amended from time to time. Don’ts • Do not share account login credentials, card information, PINs, passwords, OTPs with anyone. • Do not share KYC documents or copies of KYC documents with unknown or unidentified individuals or organisations. • Do not share any sensitive data/ information through unverified/unauthorised websites or applications. • Do not click on suspicious or unverified links received in mobile or email. MOU exchanged, in the presence of Uday Samant, Minister of Industries, Government of Maharashtra, between Deependra Singh Kushwah, Development Commissioner, Industries, Government of Maharashtra and Jayesh Taori, Associate Vice President, National Stock Exchange, today at Pune. As part of the understanding, NSE with the support of the Government of Maharashtra, shall conduct awareness drive through seminars, MSME camps, knowledge sessions, road shows, workshops to guide corporates across the state for fund raising on the NSE Emerge platform and handhold companies in the listing process. Uday Samant, Honorable Minister of Industries, Government of Maharashtra said: “Under the leadership of Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde we have been focusing on providing a conducive environment for the MSMEs of our state to propel their growth. Today, in order to further strengthen our efforts in supporting MSMEs, we have signed a MOU with the National Stock Exchange to encourage state MSMEs to tap capital markets via the NSE Emerge platform. NSE Emerge provides an alternate source of investment raising opportunity for growing SMEs by providing access to public capital along with gaining desired visibility and credibility. As a part of the MOU, we shall jointly facilitate awareness campaigns amongst the MSMEs to better understand the process, benefits and nuances of listing on the stock exchange.”Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer, NSE said: “Today, Government of Maharashtra and National Stock Exchange have entered in a MoU to collaborate and support the growth of MSMEs via NSE Emerge platform for state MSMEs. NSE Emerge enables SMEs to raise capital in an efficient manner and increase their visibility through the listing on the stock exchange. We shall organize awareness sessions for MSMEs of the state in collaboration with the Government and provide a walk-through of the fund-raising process. We urge the MSMEs in the state to come forward and avail the new source of financing through NSE Emerge.” As on today, 424 companies from various sectors are listed on NSE Emerge platform and have collectively raised over INR 8,836 Cr. He specifically sought certified copies under section 2(j) (iii) of the RTI Act requesting not share any website link available in public domain claiming that he lacks expertise to analyse that data. The PIO stated that relevant information has been duly furnished to the Appellant from their official record. She added that the relevant website link has also been furnished to him. She stated that the link furnished to the Appellant is user friendly and complete data related to census 2011 is already available on website. She further stated that the data related to census 2011 is voluminous in nature and it is not feasible to furnish the hardcopy of the same. The Appellant submitted that the relevant information has not been furnished to him till date. He stated that he has clearly mentioned in his RTI Application to provide the certified copies of all the documents sought and not the relevant website link. The CIC noted that that when an information or record is already in the public domain and there is a procedure for disclosure of such information, the same cannot be said to be held or under the control of public authority and it is deemed to be given to the public at large. Comments The officers of the public authorities who are designated as CPIOs have other duties and the duty to be discharged by them as CPIO is mostly an additional responsibility. Dealing with request for information is a time consuming process which is a drain on the resources of the public authorities.
