CANADA UNIVERSITIES THAT ACCEPT OND, HND, AND 2.2 GRADES FOR MASTERS DEGREE

December 3, 2022December 3, 2022 by Michael

If you wish to study for a master’s degree in Canada but had a subpar grade in
your undergraduate degree (2:2 or Second Class Lower), OND, or HND.

I frequently receive inquiries from folks who have heard that Canadian
universities don’t accept HNDs or 2:2 CGPAs and are curious about their chances.

The first thing to realize is that it is unquestionably competitive to be
accepted into Graduate schools (Masters/PhDs) in Canada. The usual requirement
is a minimum grade of 70–75% CGPA.

This is roughly a 3.5/5.0 CGPA. Additionally, individuals who enroll for a
research-based degree and have grades greater than this minimal are typically
successful applicants and those who are given admission funds.

Some reasons for these:

 * There are just about 100 Universities in Canada
 * Not all the universities offer Masters/PhDs
 * Not all the universities with masters/PhDs have your own course or program
 * Those offering your program will have a quota of students to admit
 * More students apply than the quota available
 * Canadian schools also typically do not accept HNDs for a Master/PhD. You will
find that the Masters’s Degree admission requirement is usually a four years
   B.Sc Degree.

If you have a low B.Sc grade or OND/HND, here are some ways to study in Canada.

A Graduate Certificate (GC) or similar is the best way to study in Canada with
an OND/HND, 2:2 CGPA, or lower B.Sc grade. Some schools name this Postgraduate
Diploma (PGD) or Post Baccalaureate Diploma.

Graduate Certificate programs are good for those with low undergraduate grades
or ND/HND. The programs qualify for postgraduate work permits (PGWPs) and other
foreign student privileges.

Bring your family to Canada for a Graduate Certificate or PGD.

You can try harder for a Master/PhD! Possibly.

Honestly, some people have done this, but they usually have more than grades. I
will summarize what they did to compensate for the low grade and position
themselves for the opportunity.

Some things to do:

 1. Build a research and publications portfolio (and do your best to get a
supervisor for a research-based Masters program)
 2. Get related work experience to show that you have related professional
    experience
 3. Apply to lower-ranked schools
 4. Write standardized tests and pass (i.e. GMAT/GRE…if it is required for your
    course of interest)
 5. Prepare other Documents strongly (CV, SOP, Reference letters)

CANADA UNIVERSITIES THAT ACCEPT OND, HND, AND 2.2 GRADES FOR MASTERS DEGREE

Also, some Canadian schools that i know have been considerate to accept students
with low grades for Masters Degrees in the past are:

 1. Delft in Netherlands
 2. Royal Roads University
 3. Bishop’s University
 4. University of Canada West
 5. Saint Mary’s University
 6. University of Regina
 7. Mount Saint Vincent University
 8. Memorial University
 9. Thompson Rivers University
 10. Crandall University
 11. University of Prince Edward Island
 12. Canadian Mennonite University
 13. Brandon University

As noted, most admitted students had more than bad marks. Check some of these
institutions, their admission standards, your profile, and what you can do to
increase your chances.

Finally, Graduate Certificate programs are inappropriate for those with ND/HNDS
or poor BSc grades. They also provide practical instruction.

If they don’t desire a master, students with 2:1 (Second class upper) and First
Class CGPAS can apply.

Canadian colleges provide most graduate certificate programs. Some Canadian
colleges offer these as Postgraduate Diplomas. Search Ontario colleges here.
Google Colleges in other provinces.

Depending on the program and school, programs last one or two years.

In reality, recent government statistics indicated more international students
in Canadian colleges.

Important last note!

Importantly, as an international student, you should apply to a Designated
Learning Institution that will allow you to get a post-graduation work permit if
you want to stay in Canada.

Study permits require an acceptance letter from a designated learning
institution. A provincial or territorial government-designated learning
institution accepts overseas students.

Check here to see if a school is a designated learning institution and if its
programs qualify for a post-graduation work visa.

I hope the post helps, and good luck with your application!
