ROGER MILES
FACULTY LEAD, CONDUCT & CULTURE ACADEMY AT UK FINANCE

PROFILE

Dr. Roger Miles researches behaviour-at-risk and advises on the regulation,
measurement and reporting of conduct, culture and reputation risk. He is
co-founder and Head of Faculty at UK Finance’s Conduct and Culture Academy,
working internationally to address human-factor risks through sector
professional bodies and leading direct in-house interventions in financial
services firms.

Following audit training with a Big Four accountant, he advised the Boards of
large publicly listed companies in the UK, EU and US as a partner in a global
investor relations firm. He served as Director of Communications for British
Bankers’ Association and as their UK Rapporteur at Federation Bancaire Europeene
in Brussels; and as a Head of Risk Communications in HM Civil Service. He then
requalified as a social psychologist, researching links between risk perception,
regulatory design and rule-breaking. In his PhD, prescribing a new ‘behavioural
lens’ approach to financial regulation, he predicted exactly the change of
regulatory regime that happened next as, following a global financial crisis,
governments around the world rushed to create new Conduct-based regulatory
agencies.

His commissioned teaching includes modules for Cambridge University, four parts
of the University of London, HM Government Cabinet Office, Lloyds of London, The
Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, and many other institutions
internationally.

He is a contributing editor at Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence; helps
compile the Encyclopaedia of Behavioural Science Terms in the LSE’s annual
Behavioral Economics Guides; and creates Human Risk video content for Finance
Unlocked. His most recent popular handbooks, Conduct Risk Management: A
Behavioural Approach and Culture Audit in Financial Services have been endorsed
by the world’s leading financial regulators and many business leaders.
