VIDEO: GETTING THE PRONUNCIATION RIGHT

VIDEO: GETTING THE PRONUNCIATION RIGHT

While the consequences of the name bias can be large, thankfully the fix is
pretty simple: get used to pronouncing a wide range of names.

The primary issue with the name bias is people’s trouble stepping out of their
comfort zones. By nature, we’re drawn to people and things that seem like us.
But the good news is, with a little effort and practice, we can expand our
experiences.

Tips for Dismantling the Name Bias

 * Ask for the pronunciation. If you’ve heard a name you don’t understand,
simply ask the person how to pronounce their name. When they repeat it, truly
listen. This can be awkward and a little embarrassing, but no more so than
mispronouncing someone’s name or giving up altogether.

 * Don’t alienate. There’s no need to comment on how “odd” their name sounds;
simply ask for the correct pronunciation and move on.

 * Make sure to practice. Especially when it comes to introducing someone with a
name you find difficult to pronounce, you’ll want to clarify how to say it
   correctly before the fact.

 * If you get it wrong, don’t worry. Just apologize and clarify. Remember that
everyone makes mistakes, so acknowledge it, then work on getting it right the
   next time.

 * Don’t be dismissive or flippant. Saying someone’s name correctly is an act of
respect. But also, mispronouncing someone’s name doesn’t need to feel like
failure. Instead, treat it as an opportunity to learn.

 * Use someone’s given name as is. Subbing “Ade” for Adebowale is never
acceptable unless they tell you to call them that. Also be sure to insist
you’re happy to call them their given name. It might just take you a couple
of tries to get it right.

Thanks to the internet, we have so many more resources today than we’ve had in
the past. There are even websites that offer audio pronunciations of names so we
can practice without the risk of embarrassment. One such site is Pronounce
Names. You can also find youtube videos and similar sites that help with
pronunciation.

Watch: It’s the mispronunciation echoed around the world. At the Oscars in 2014,
John Travolta infamously introduced fellow actor Idina Menzel as “Adele Dazeem”
and sparked a million jokes alongside an important conversation. Thankfully, the
following year, Menzel got the chance to return the favor with some good-natured
humor.

Take Away: As Orange is the New Black actress Uzo Aduba’s mother once told her,
“If [someone] can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky,
they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”
