THE RANKINGS.

2023 ULTIMATE

To open in a separate window, click here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How does this thing work, anyway?

You can read more on the “Methodology” tab in any of the ranking sheets, but
here’s a short summary:

 * Players receive points for placing well, beating good players, and outplacing
good players, and lose points for losing to bad players.
 * Players’ points per tournament are averaged, weighted on the tournament’s
   value.
 * Players can qualify by placing highly in specific tournaments.
 * Tournament, win, and loss values are determined by a weekly-updating list.

ECHORANK 2023 MID-YEAR

Disclaimer: EchoRank is not affiliated with UltRank. The two algorithms do not
have the same design principle or execution, and EchoRank 2023 Mid-Year should
not be considered an indication as to UltRank’s summer release later this year.

The year is somehow already half over. Smash has more-or-less returned to
pre-pandemic activity; tournaments are happening every week and more and more
players are showing up and taking names.

With 245 tournaments already logged and over 750 qualified players in the books,
EchoRank has concluded its most active half-year yet. With the end of June
behind us, it’s time for the annual mid-year report.

KAGARIBI #9 – PREVIEW

This is maybe the busiest January in any Smash game’s history. Three bonafide
supermajor-level events in Umebura SP 9, Let’s Make BIG Moves 2023, and Genesis
9 have passed; but there’s still one more 9 to go. Kagaribi #9 has even more
players than Umebura did, at a whopping 1,248, slotting in at the 28th largest
Smash event of all time and top 10 in Ultimate’s history.

I haven’t done a writeup like this in a while, but I’m feeling motivated. So
here we go.

Information on how to watch Kagaribi #9 is at the bottom of the page!

Did I steal this directly from the start.gg page? Absolutely.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2022 — FINAL RANKING AND ANALYSIS

Another year has come and gone, and with it another EchoRank season. Weirdly
enough, this is only the second full calendar year that Ultimate has had,
despite four whole years having passed since its release.

The final ranking graphic can be found below; the full ranking can be found at
bit.ly/EchoUlt2022.

Maybe I should have made this a bit thinner. Oh well.

The main focus of this ranking release cycle, however, is not the actual
ranking, but analyzing why the ranking came out as it did, identifying issues,
and theorycrafting improvements. I do this every ranking iteration, but due to
time constraints and the abundance of rankings nowadays, I thought it’d be more
interesting to do a deep dive into the numbers than try to compete with a
multitude of rankings that, admittedly, have better production value than I do.
‘Tis the consequence of being a one-person team.

Plus, this way I can gotcha people that quote-retweet the ranking pointing out
obvious flaws in an attempt to get Twitter likes. Win-win.

Familiarizing oneself with the EchoRank methodology is recommended, otherwise
you’ll probably be confused by a lot of what I’m about to go over.

2022 ECHORANK ULTIMATE – HALF YEAR REPORT

With 2022 half over (already?!), it seems pertinent to release a midyear
ranking. Tournaments are back in full swing and the field is as competitive as
ever; let’s see who made the top cut.

I’ll present each player in order from #100 to #1 with some honorable mentions
thrown in, giving some stats and any applicable notes before concluding with the
final graphic at the end of the article.

Tournaments are from January 1st, 2022 to June 30th, 2022, which spans roughly
the time period from Let’s Make Big Moves 2022 and Kagaribi#6 to CEO 2022 and 95
Kings of Fields 2.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT? / THINGS TO NOTE

In this year’s EchoRank, I tried to prioritize national-level tournaments more;
only a certain amount of a player’s score can be comprised of regional
performances. An unfortunate side effect is that players with only one major
have their score skewed towards that performance; ideally most of these will
sort out as we enter the summer of Smash, but you’ll notice a lot of the oddest
placing players have only one national recorded. This doesn’t mean, however,
that regionals don’t have a significant weight on a final ranking, and there are
several players that have respectable results at nationals bolstered by strong
regional results.

As an additional note, neither Europe nor Mexico have had a national-level event
at this point in time, so several players from those areas who might otherwise
have the qualifications for top 100 or even HM are excluded.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2020-2021: POSTMORTEM

Postmortem’s kind of an odd name, isn’t it? Sort of implies death. Well, I guess
I’ll be bringing the data back from the grave one last time…

This post is basically going to be a dump of a bunch of miscellanea relating to
EchoRank Ultimate 2020-2021, both in retrospect and going into the new ranking
season. There will be lots of numbers. Thank you to everyone who tuned in to the
release — your support means a lot to me!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GRAPHIC

First, a simple graphic with the entire release edition of the ranking. There’s
a note at the top of the #100-#76 article pointing out that there was a bit of a
snafu with the data collection, but I’ll use the officially (“officially”; who
do I think I am lol) released version for this graphic.

yay

So there it is.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2020-2021: #25–#1

It’s that time of year again! Although the 2020 edition of EchoRank had to be
halted due to COVID-19, it’s continued on into 2021 with the return of
tournaments. This ranking therefore covers tournaments since the weekend of
Let’s Make Big Moves all the way back in January of 2020.

Below, as usual, you’ll find comprehensive graphics and a short blurb on the
player’s year, along with some other useful tidbits.

You can read about how this ranking works on the Methodology tab above, or by
clicking this sentence.

Let’s get started!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#25. VEGACY | CHARLIEDAKING @CHARLIEHARUNO (NEW)

Charliedaking’s season started out extremely hot — regional success was paired
with an extraordinary run to 9th at Genesis 7 and a respectable 25th at
Frostbite, picking up wins over MVD, Elegant, and two over ScAtt along the way.
His Smash Ultimate Summit 3 performance was nothing to sneeze at, either;
although he placed 9th, he took sets over Dabuz and Cosmos to get there.
Although the rest of his 2021 hasn’t been as explosive, make no mistake:
Charliedaking is one of the best players in the world.

#24. SBI | KEN @KENISBG (+15)

KEN holds the distinction of being one of the only players in Japan who can
consistently take sets off of ProtoBanham, being 3-3 over the course of the
ranking season through a time when ProtoBanham was considered the country’s
definitive #1. Although he struggles more against the rest of Japan’s top
echelon (1-4 Shuton, 1-5 zackray, 0-3 Tea), the Sonic main has proven himself to
be one of the best players in his region, and subsequently, one of the best in
the world. Only a couple of empty 17th place runs and less stellar performances
in the USA hold him back, but KEN has proven time and time again that he has
what it takes to compete at the top level, and there’s no doubt that he’ll
continue to take names as time goes on.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2020-2021: #50–#26

It’s that time of year again! Although the 2020 edition of EchoRank had to be
halted due to COVID-19, it’s continued on into 2021 with the return of
tournaments. This ranking therefore covers tournaments since the weekend of
Let’s Make Big Moves all the way back in January of 2020.

Let’s get started!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#50. CJE | HERO @KRHMRR1216 (NEW)

A renowned Japanese Wi-Fi warrior, Hero attended his first tournament at
Kagaribi#3 and defeated KEN en route to 13th. That in itself would be impressive
enough, but he followed it up with a fourth place finish at the sequel,
defeating shky, Akakikusu, and Yoshidora, then got third at MaesumaTOP#6 going
1-1 with the #1 player in Japan, ProtoBanham. Although his more recent events
haven’t been as impressive, it’s clear that Hero is one of the strongest
Japanese players and may soon have a claim for the best Bowser in the world.

#49. DA | SINJI @SINJI93 (-13)

Sinji has had one of the most quietly consistent seasons. Never placing outside
of the top 16, he’s managed to keep his loss quality high while picking up
several solid wins. Of particular note is his January 2020, where he took 17th
at Glitch 8 while making top 16 at both Let’s Make Big Moves and Genesis 7,
picking up wins on LingLing, Kurama, Gen, and Laid along the way. Although he
hasn’t been as active on the national scene since tournaments returned, a decent
17th place finish at Super Smash Con: Fall Fest shows that Sinji still has what
it takes to compete with the best.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2020-2021: #75–#51

It’s that time of year again! Although the 2020 edition of EchoRank had to be
halted due to COVID-19, it’s continued on into 2021 with the return of
tournaments. This ranking therefore covers tournaments since the weekend of

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#75. APLE | JAKE @JAKEFSMASH (NEW)

Jake, a virtual unknown pre-pandemic, catapulted his name to wide recognition
when he began terrorizing online brackets with the newly released Steve. The
question, though, as always, was whether he could translate that success to
offline play — and translate it he did, placing ninth at InfinityCON Tally 2021
with wins over Goblin and Mugen. Although his tournament attendance has been
sparse, Jake has procured wins on players such as Chag and Larry Lurr and is 1-1
with MVD in an unlikely rivalry, and has made a solid case for the world’s best
Minecraft player — in Smash.

#74. GOTE | VINNY G @VINNYGISME (+10)

Vinny G began 2020 hot in his home region with solid placings at three
consecutive regionals, getting wins on MuteAce, Kobe, JMafia, and Myran along
the way. Although his switch to Sephiroth over lockdown had a shaky start — he
drowned at 129th at InfinityCON Tally 2021 — more recent tournaments have seen
him return to form, notably taking a win on ZD at the SWT LCQ and ending the
season 3-1 against a particular Floridian R.O.B.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2020-2021: #100–#76

It’s that time of year again! Although the 2020 edition of EchoRank had to be
halted due to COVID-19, it’s continued on into 2021 with the return of
tournaments. This ranking therefore covers tournaments since the weekend of
Let’s Make Big Moves all the way back in January of 2020.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ranking note: as I was finishing out #76–#51 I noticed that there was a
misreport from very early in the season, which actually changes some of the
rankings listed here. Since this article is published and the most anyone moved
was two spots, I won’t change this post for posterity, but any images you see of
the final ranking may differ slightly than what is on this page.

#100. PUP | MYLES @MYLESMOVES (NEW)

Although Myles has long put up solid results in his home region of the
Northeast, accruing wins over players such as Suarez, DM, and LingLing, none
were ready for his run at Riptide. There, after losing to A Coward in pools, he
made an extensive losers run through the likes of Zomba, TonyZTank, and Ned
before falling to Lui$ to finish at 13th at the first post-pandemic major.

#99. MUNEKIN @MUNEKIN_TH (NEW)

Munekin is a solidly consistent player, never failing to make top 32 even in the
infamously volatile Japanese scene. His strongest run is easily his third place
finish at MaesumaTOP#2, where he defeated Sigma, Abadango, Yoshidora, KEN, and
Rizeasu, but he’s also taken sets off of Lea and Atelier at the other
tournaments he’s attended. Although he hasn’t been as active post-quarantine,
expect Munekin to tear through brackets whenever he shows up.

ECHORANK ULTIMATE 2020-2021: HONORABLE MENTIONS

It’s that time of year again! Although the 2020 edition of EchoRank had to be
halted due to COVID-19, it’s continued on into 2021 with the return of
tournaments. This ranking therefore covers tournaments since the weekend of
Let’s Make Big Moves all the way back in January of 2020.

Let’s get started!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First up is Honorable Mentions. To be ranked on EchoRank, a player needs to have
attended at least one national-level tournament, so that there’s a record of
that player going against known levels of competition. However, sometimes there
are players that don’t end up making it out to any of these tournaments but
still do well enough to deserve recognition. The following four players, if they
had attended a national-level tournament and performed similarly, would have
made the top 100.
