Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports AFTER BOWL GAME COMMENTS GO VIRAL, KIRK HERBSTREIT ISSUES CLARIFICATION Originally posted on Larry Brown Sports | By Larry Brown | Last updated 1/1/22 Kirk Herbstreit issued a clarification on Twitter Saturday after something he said earlier in the day about bowl games went viral. Herbstreit and fellow ESPN analyst Desmond Howard were talking on the network’s set at the Rose Bowl about players who opt out of bowl games. Both men, who played college football in the late ’80s/early ’90s, were critical of the attitude of current players toward non-College Football Playoff bowl games. “I think this era of players doesn’t love football,” Herbstreit concluded. “We’re dealing with a totally different mentality with these student-athletes nowadays,” Howard agreed. Both believe players don’t hold bowl games in high regard if they’re not playing in one of the CFP games. Here is the clip: Later in the day, Herbstreit shared his clarification. He apologized for generalizing too much and lumping all players together. But he stood by his belief that there are many players who don’t seem to love the game. Herbstreit and Howard played in a different era, one during which players didn’t opt out of bowl games to protect their draft stock. During their era, bowl games were a big deal. Things have changed. And while Herbstreit was wrong to generalize so much, he’s not wrong that many more players are treating college football with business decisions. To some people who love the sport, the history, the rivalries, the tradition and the pageantry, these attitude shifts can be difficult and upsetting to process. NFL FEDEX FIELD STANDS COLLAPSE AS EAGLES QB JALEN HURTS EXITS FIELD… Jalen Hurts pushed the Philadelphia Eagles closer to a spot in the postseason with a win against Washington in Week 17, but it was his exit through the FedEx Field tunnel that was maybe the most shocking moment of the day. As Hurts walked into the tunnel, an avalanche of Eagles fans dropped at his feet when a section of the stands collapses under their weight. Fortunately, neither Hurts nor the group of fans seemed too fazed by the incident. FedEx Field has been Washington's home since it opened in 1997, but it has been subject to an increasing amount of criticism due to its seeming state of disrepair. Earlier in the 2021 season, video showed liquid leaking from the stadium on to the heads of fans during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. While fans could be heard saying "it's sewage," the team said it was from a storage tank filled with rain water. Messi, Juan Bernat, Sergio Rico and Nathan Bitumazala are all "in isolation and are subject to the appropriate health protocol," PSG said in a press release. PSG is scheduled to face Vannes in the Round of 32 of the French Cup on Monday. The tournament has been won by PSG in six out of the last seven years, including each of the last two. Messi, 34, spent his entire senior career with Barcelona before leaving to join PSG in August. While he's scored just one goal in 11 appearances in Ligue play with PSG, he has five goals in five Champions League appearances. Earlier this year, Messi won the Ballon d'Or extending his record number of wins. The only other player who has won the award more than three times is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won it five times. NHL BLACKHAWKS ACTIVATE MARC-ANDRE FLEURY FROM COVID PROTOCOL A smiling face is back on the Chicago Blackhawks’ active roster, as the team activated goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol this morning, per a team tweet. Fleury’s return is a byproduct of the new, shortened COVID-19 quarantine requirements. Fleury was placed in the protocol on December 27, so he’s now eligible to return only five days after entering. Arvid Soderblom will get the start for Chicago in goal today, but Fleury will return to the lineup and will be the backup for their game against Calgary. Fleury’s rebounded nicely from what was a horrid start to the season by his standards, working his way back up to a .913 save percentage through 20 games. The Blackhawks hope his return to the room can help steady a team that was thrashed during a 6-1 loss to Nashville yesterday. According to Shams Charania and Kelly Iko of The Athletic, Porter left the arena after assistant coach John Lucas challenged him, Wood and several other players for a lack of effort. Porter reportedly threw an object and had to be separated from Lucas during the exchange. When told that he wouldn’t play in the second half, he responded by driving away rather than joining his teammates on the bench. Wood, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, was held out of the starting lineup after missing a mandatory COV ID-19 test earlier in the day, the authors add. He played eight minutes in the first half, going scoreless and missing all four of his shots from the field, and sources tell Charania and Iko that he informed coaches at halftime that he wasn’t interested in playing in the second half. Head coach Stephen Silas said the incident was sparked by a “spirited debate” after allowing the Nuggets to score 77 points in the first half, writes Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. It marked the second straight game in which the Rockets had surrendered more than 70 points in the first half. “I mean, we were angry at halftime that we had just given up 47 points (in the second quarter),” Silas said. “So, we watched the film. We had a spirited debate at halftime. And you know, I have certain demands of this group as far as playing hard. Making mistakes is different than giving the effort, and I wasn’t satisfied with the effort. So, halftime took a little bit longer and then getting more organized after halftime (took a) little bit longer as well.” Porter has spoken to team officials and expressed regret about the incident, a Rockets source told Iko. He has a history of anger issues, which is why Houston was able to acquire him from the Cavaliers midway through last season for a conditional second-round draft pick. After the trade, the Rockets sent Porter to their G League affiliate to learn how to become a point guard. The organization has committed to him for that position, to the point of keeping John Wall, the team’s highest-paid player, inactive so he won’t affect Porter’s minutes. Porter will be eligible for a rookie-scale extension this summer, and this latest issue will surely affect the Rockets’ willingness to make a long-term commitment. There have already been trade rumors surrounding Wood, who is in the second season of a three-year contract he signed as a free agent in 2020. He’s having another productive year, averaging 16.8 points and 10.3 rebounds in 35 games, but Houston isn’t winning and he’s probably the team’s best trade asset. No disciplinary action has been announced against either player, although fines and possible suspensions seem likely. The Rockets barely made it back to the court in time for the second half, Feigen adds, and the incident reveals problems that go far beyond a seven-game losing streak. “There is, you know, when you’re competitors, there’s times where you’re in the locker room and in the locker rooms … you’re getting after it and you’re showing examples,” Silas said. “And you know, when you want a team to do better, you have to let them know. And tonight, was the night I had to let them know.” Quiz THE '2021 AWARD WINNERS' QUIZ Entertainment THE BEST FILMS THAT MIX LIVE ACTION AND ANIMATION NFL VIKINGS CONSIDERING FIRING MIKE ZIMMER AFTER THE REGULAR SEASON? Instead, it was the Oklahoma State Cowboys who scored 30 consecutive points to erase the 21-point deficit and eventually win, 37-35, on Saturday. Oklahoma State struck just before halftime with a four-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took less than a minute. Notre Dame led 28-14 heading into the second half, and Oklahoma State wasted no time climbing all the way to the lead before the end of the third quarter. The Fighting Irish struggled to piece together successful drives in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over twice with a fumble and an interception. Notre Dame also turned the ball over on downs late in the game. The only touchdown of the second half for Notre Dame came with 65 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame's ensuing onside kick was recovered by Oklahoma State to seal the win for the Cowboys. Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders finished with 371 passing yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also led the Cowboys in rushing with 125 yards. Notre Dame's Jack Coan put up gaudy numbers of his own, racking up 509 passing yards, five touchdowns and one interception. His 68 pass attempts were a Notre Dame single-game record. The win was Oklahoma State's third Fiesta Bowl victory and the second during Mike Gundy's tenure as the Cowboys' head coach. "I’m not sure either one will make it back," Kingsbury said Saturday, via ESPN's Ed Werder. "I think it will be close." Hopkins, 29, was acquired from the Houston Texans in a 2020 trade and finished his first season with the Cardinals with 115 receptions and 1,407 yards. Production in his second season in Arizona dropped off, however, as Hopkins struggled through hamstring problems before tearing his MCL in a Week 14 game. According to Ian Rapoport, he underwent surgery and hoped for a late January return. Watt, 32, is in his first season with the Cardinals after joining Arizona as a free agent in the offseason. In October he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery to repair, and Kingsbury left the door open for a possible return. The Cardinals have stumbled through the back half of their regular-season slate and enter Week 17 on a three-game losing streak. While Arizona has clinched a spot in the playoffs, the Los Angeles Rams have taken over first place in the NFC West and would clinch the division with a win over the Ravens if the Cardinals lose to the Cowboys on Sunday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Phillips agreed to a three-year extension with the Patriots on Saturday that will pay him $12.75 million and keep him under contract through the 2024 season. "He's one of our best players," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Phillips, via the team's website. "He's one of our most versatile players. He almost always does the right thing. When something comes up, maybe you haven't covered it... He does what you would want him to do without really telling him exactly what to do in that situation, so all that's impressive." Phillips, 29, played the first six seasons of his career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2018. After a broken arm cost him more than half of the 2019 season, he hit free agency and joined the Patriots on a two-year deal in free agency. In 31 games with the Patriots, Phillips has six interceptions, one forced fumble and one sack. Earlier in the 2021 season, Phillips scored his first career touchdown on an interception against his former team. The Patriots have several key defenders — including safety Devin McCourty, linebacker Dont'a Hightower and cornerback J.C. Jackson — set to become free agents in the 2022 offseason. Unfortunately, the team learned on Friday morning that the starting quarterback will not be in attendance for the crucial contest. ESPN Vikings reporter Courtney Cronin tweeted that backup quarterback Sean Mannion was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday and is line to start on Sunday night. Cousins has played in all 15 games this season for Minnesota, including the 34-31 victory over the Packers in Week 11. In that game, Cousins went 24-for-35 with 341 passing yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions. Mannion is in his sixth NFL season, but he hasn't played in a game since 2019. In 13 career games, the 29-year-old has gone 45-for-74 with 384 passing yards and no touchdowns against three interceptions. NBA NETS DON'T EXPECT KYRIE IRVING'S PART-TIME AVAILABILITY TO DISRUPT… NBA LAKERS TRADE FOUR-TIME ALL-STAR RAJON RONDO TO CAVALIERS FOR DENZEL… NFL Quiz THE '500 PASSING YARDS IN AN NFL GAME' QUIZ Entertainment UNDERRATED '90S MOVIES YOU CAN STREAM RIGHT NOW MLB THE HITCH IN A POTENTIAL DALLAS KEUCHEL TRADE FOR THE WHITE SOX Almost exactly two years ago, Dec. 30, 2019, the White Sox signed Dallas Keuchel to a three-year contract that guaranteed him $55.5M. Keuchel was excellent in the shortened 2020 campaign, throwing 63 1/3 innings with an ERA of 1.99. However, there were reasons to be suspicious of those outcomes, as all of the advanced metrics thought he deserved much worse (4.30 xERA, 3.98 xFIP, 4.57 SIERA). That discrepancy was largely due to his declining strikeout rate, as well as an unsustainable 4.7% HR/FB rate. Keuchel has always been a groundball guy and has never had tremendous strikeout stuff. In his Cy Young season, 2015, he hit his high point with a strikeout rate of 23.7%, just a few ticks above that year’s league average of 20.4%. Since then, the league average has trended north, landing at 23.2% in 2021. Keuchel’s, however, has been steadily dropping and was at 16.3% in 2020. In 2021, his strikeout rate fell further, landing at 13.2%, and his batted ball luck ran out, sending his ERA soaring up to a career-high 5.28. The advanced metrics felt that was largely deserved based on the lack of Ks, as evidenced by his 6.20 xERA, 4.74 xFIP and 5.01 SIERA. With one guaranteed year remaining on his contract, it makes sense for the White Sox to look into trading him for a couple of reasons. First, there’s his diminished effectiveness, as illustrated by those declining strikeout rates and increasing ERA. It’s possible that he could turn things around, but he turns 34 on New Year’s Day, meaning he would have to buck traditional aging trends to do it. Secondly, there’s his salary. He’ll be paid $18M in 2022, along with a $1.5M buyout on a $20M club option for 2023. The team is in unprecedented payroll territory, setting a franchise record in 2021 by having an Opening Day payroll of $128.7M. The White Sox are projected to blow way past that in 2022, currently sitting around $180M, in the estimation of Jason Martinez of Roster Resource. However, the problem with that club option is that it’s actually a club/vesting option. It becomes guaranteed if Keuchel pitches at least 160 innings in each of 2021 and 2022. He’s already hit the first of those benchmarks after he threw 162 innings in 2021. Another season of 160 innings and that $20M for 2023 becomes guaranteed. That’s not a difficult line for Keuchel to reach as long as he’s healthy. Over the past eight seasons, he reached that threshold in six of them if we prorate his 2020 innings total. In 2017, he missed some time with neck issues and came just shy, at 145 2/3 innings. In 2019, he got to 112 2/3, but that was because he lingered on the free agent market until being signed by Atlanta a few months into the season, not making his season debut until June 21. In other words, apart from that neck issue in 2017, he’s been a fairly reliable innings eater, meaning he has a decent chance of triggering that option. This is where it gets tricky to line up a trade. A team with some wiggle room in its budget might be willing to take on Keuchel’s $18M for this coming season, but it would have to also consider the distinct possibility that Keuchel stays healthy and doubles the commitment, both in dollars and in years. It’s possible a team could acquire Keuchel and try to intentionally limit his innings to prevent the option from vesting, but that type of direct manipulation has the potential to lead to a grievance, either an official one or an unofficial one. As an example of how an unofficial grievance could hurt a team, it could reduce the chances of signing or extending players if the organization has shown itself to be underhanded in its dealings with players. Perhaps the White Sox could sweeten the pot for the team on the other end of the deal by including a prospect or two, but the trouble is that their farm isn’t in great shape, at least according to Baseball America, which ranked their system dead last in the league in its most recent organization talent rankings. Perhaps the best move for the White Sox is to stand pat with Keuchel and hope that he has a bounce-back campaign. Their starting five rotation looks to be solid, with Keuchel joined by Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease and Michael Kopech. However, teams need more than five starters to get through a season, and their depth isn’t terribly strong. Jonathan Stiever and Jimmy Lambert are depth options on the 40-man roster, but neither has more than 15 innings of MLB experience — and their Triple-A numbers aren’t terribly exciting so far. Even if the club finds the money to add another starter, it might need Keuchel’s help to get through the season in an AL Central that is becoming more competitive. The Giants were blown out by the Bears 29-3 on Sunday, dropping them to 4-12. After the game, Judge was asked why Giants fans should continue to have faith that Big Blue can get things turned around. The coach responded in an 11-minute, expletive-filled rant talking up the Giants and the work they have done since he took over before the 2020 season, and even seemed to take a shot at the Washington Football Team in the process. “This ain’t a team that’s having fistfights on the sidelines. This ain’t some clown show organization or something else, OK?” Judge said, via Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com. “We’re talking about the foundation built. The toughest thing to change in the team, the toughest thing to change in the club is the way people think. You understand that? That’s the toughest thing. You can get new players; you can have them in your damn locker room all you want. You have to change how people think. You change how they f—ing — pardon my language — believe in what you’re doing. They have to trust the process. And that’s a lot easier said than done when they’re looking up right now, one game left and the most games they’ll win is five this season, OK?” Judge added that “every fan has a right to boo my a– out of the stadium” if the Giants do not play well in their season finale, and claimed that former members of the team were regretful that they were not still with the organization. “I can tell you we’ve got more players here who are going to be free agents next year, all right, they’re coming in my office every day begging me to come back. I know that. I know that,” Judge said. “I know players that we coached last year still calling me twice a week telling me how much they wish they were still here even though they’re getting paid more somewhere else. OK? So I know we’ve got the right foundational pieces right there.” The entire thing, as transcribed by Rosenblatt, is worth reading. It’s a fairly remarkable and unexpected eruption from a coach who appears to be under increasing pressure. Word is that Judge’s job is safe for 2022. Regardless, he clearly feels the need to defend himself at this point, and to go above and beyond what might have been expected.
