Skip to main content My Dashboard EN BUILDING AN INTERNAL MIRROR BUILDING AN INTERNAL MIRROR Print At lunch, Marcus and Kiara are commiserating about yet another rainy May day that has affected their commute (there are just so many this year!) when they turn to Erika for her opinion. Erika has been working on bringing out her authentic self and says, “I know it’s not a lot of fun to drive in, but rainy days remind me of my grandmother.” She launches into the story of her childhood rainy day ritual and before long, she, Kiara, and Marcus are talking and laughing about their childhoods. The conversation winds down and the three return to work. But a few weeks later, Kiara’s at the store and sees a candle on sale called “Mountain Rain.” She picks it up for Erika, leaves it on her desk with a note that says, “Here’s to stories about sprites!” When Erika sees it, she’s touched, and realizes she’s found a work friend. Who We Are on the Inside How did Erika get to the point where she’s accepting her authentic self? Andrés T. Tapia, senior partner at Korn Ferry, says that the process of presenting our real selves is a process of learning to see who we are on the inside. It starts when we allow ourselves to consider three basic components, says Tapia: our valuesour personalityour culture Each of these things impacts who we are, and understanding them will make us more comfortable being authentic. “Know yourself. Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.” Advice columnist Ann Landers offers a humorous reminder that being authentic also might mean accepting that we do, in fact, have faults. Say Hello to the Real You Just knowing the components that make us up is one thing, but what are some tools we can use to investigate those components more deeply? Tapia recommends these tools: Introspection: Whether we’re meditating in stillness or moving on a hiking trail, it’s important that we spend time with our thoughts.Interaction: When we communicate and engage with other people, we can pay attention to our responses, and consider what aspects of ourselves influence our likes and behaviors.Diverse reading: Not only does reading open us up to new perspectives and ways of thinking, be they story- or data-driven, but Tapia says it’s also known to increase empathy.Feedback: By being open and accepting of feedback, and even constructive criticism, we remind ourselves to stay humble and to hear the perspectives of those around us. By pursuing an intention to follow these steps, Tapia says that we can bring out our authentic selves in the workplace, not only making work a little more welcoming, but benefitting our organization through a diversity of perspectives. Take Away: Being authentic isn’t a one-week challenge. It’s a lifelong process of discovering ourselves, understanding the ways and reasons we change, and accepting who we are. That might seem daunting, but the good news is that we only need to start by listening to others and considering that vulnerability might not be as scary as we think it is. In fact, it might bring us wonderful friendships and days filled with more joy. SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW Why, according to the article, is feedback an important tool for being authentic?
