NOTHING IS BRINGING IMESSAGE TO ITS ANDROID PHONE

Nothing Chats will let owners of the Phone 2 send iMessages to iPhones. It’s the
first time an Android OEM has integrated something like this into a device.

Cruise robotaxi shutdown expands, pressing pause on supervised and manual trips
too.

Cruise’s robotaxis are front and center of the industry’s trust issue after
losing their California permit following an incident where a pedestrian ended up
stuck underneath one of its cars.

It already halted service nationwide and said it’s installing new updates. Now
Cruise has announced it’s taking its cars off of public roads while it undergoes
a full safety review. Meanwhile, Cruise board member and GM legal executive VP
Craig Glidden is “expanding” his role to lead Cruise’s Legal, Communications,
and Finance teams.

>  In the coming days, we are also pausing our supervised and manual AV
> operations in the U.S., affecting roughly 70 vehicles. This orderly pause is a
> further step to rebuild public trust while we undergo a full safety review. We
> will continue to operate our vehicles in closed course training environments
> and maintain an active simulation program in order to stay focused on
> advancing AV technology.

I thought it was no phones in the courtroom!

Lockheimer just became the first Googler to pull out a phone on the stand — two
of them, a Samsung Z Flip and a Pixel Fold. No sideloading walkthrough, I’m
afraid; they were a simple example of how Google is attempting to innovate on
Android to compete with Apple.

Hey, Hiroshi: those phones belong to the judge now. Sorry, I don’t make the
rules!

Google Chat is getting a smidge more useful for Workspace users.

Before now, Google Chat notified users of changes in Google’s Workspace apps,
but that’s about it.

Now, users can actually reply, resolve, or tag coworkers right from the chat
window. It’ll also show more of a comment thread for better context. Google says
it could take up to three days to roll out to everyone.

Valve says the transparent, limited edition OLED Steam Deck is an “experiment.”

“We’re hopeful that people are excited about this release, and if we see high
demand it will give us confidence to do more colorways in the future,” Valve
said on X (formerly Twitter).

I imagine the device will sell out faster than you can say “Half-Life 3” when it
goes on sale on Thursday, so hopefully Valve does take that as a sign that the
people want Steam Decks in more colors.

Hiroshi Lockheimer has taken the stand in Epic v. Google.

We’re now hearing from Google’s leader of Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, and other
things — Hiroshi Lockheimer leads the Platforms and Ecosystems team, and he’s
been one of the public faces of Android for many years. The Verge’s staff have
often spotted him at events.

He says Jamie Rosenberg, a former head of Google Play who took the stand
yesterday, reported to him.

Netflix’s first live sports broadcast starts at 6PM ET.

After Netflix’s live Love is Blind reunion show ran into some issues this
spring, it’s trying to go live again.

Tonight, its first-ever live sports broadcast pairs F1 racers from Drive to
Survive — conveniently in the US for the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend— with
golfers from Full Swing in a chase for the inaugural Netflix Cup. What might
come next? Maybe Netflix could bid on future NBA In-Season Tournament games
(presumably, that name is a placeholder for the Netflix NBA Cup).

(Disclosure: Vox Media Studios produced Full Swing, and The Verge recently
produced a series with Netflix.)

The DOJ wants to know how commercial airlines ended up with ‘thousands of bogus
engine parts.’

Earlier this year, European regulators found that a London company called AOG
Technics was using forged documents to sell thousands of uncertified engine
parts that have been installed in older Airbus and Boeing jets.

Bloomberg reports that the US Department of Justice is now investigating the
issue,

Google CEO Sundar Pichai on his obligations to preserve evidence for trial:

He says his legal hold instructions were:

> I was instructed to preserve documents be it email, my documents on my
> computer or physical documents, and not to use chat regarding the litigation
> matter, and if I used chat, to turn history on.

Did you follow these instructions? “Yes I did.”

And, Pichai and Google say, Epic’s smoking gun “chat history off” request was
about a “Cloud Next Keynote” event. Nothing to do with Android, Play, or this
lawsuit, he attests.

Google Play was “one of the most profitable businesses” in the world in the
first half of 2020.

In a July 2020 presentation to the Alphabet board of directors, Pichai confirmed
today, Google Play had a 65 percent operating margin, for a $4.4 billion
operating profit in H1 2020. That was 33 percent up compared to H1 2019.

Play was “one of the world’s most largest commerce platforms with >250M people
transacting in a year, and also one of the most profitable businesses (>60%
margin) and a key contributor the Alphabet P/L,” a presentation slide reads.

Trump’s rhetoric is getting scarier — and openly fascist.

Zack Beauchamp, in Vox:

> There’s been a long-running debate among American political observers as to
> whether Trump can reasonably be described as a fascist. Between his
> increasingly fascist rhetoric and increasingly fascist second-term policy
> proposals, the debate should now be considered settled. A political leader who
> vows to destroy opponents he calls “vermin,” to weaponize the Justice
> Department against his critics, and to conduct political purges in the federal
> government is in fascist territory.

This is important no matter what, but you’re reading this in The Verge so here’s
a tech angle: the big social platforms are facing a 2024 content-moderation
nightmare. Emboldened by Elon Musk’s teardown of Twitter, they all want to pull
back on moderation costs in various ways, but this election cycle will feature
some of the most heated and dangerous rhetoric from a major party candidate any
of us have ever experienced. It’s going to be incredibly messy all around.

“So a user going to AmazonAppStore.com is treated exactly the same as
I’ll-steal-your-info.com?” Yes, says Pichai.

“That’s right. We don’t distinguish between the URLs,” says Google’s CEO.

We’re talking about sideloading friction, which Epic argues (and Google admitted
internally) kept a sideloaded version of Fortnite from being financially viable.

Sources tell Reuters the FBI “struggled to stop” the group of hackers that waged
attacks on MGM and Caesars Entertainment in September — even though the agency
knew the identities “of at least a dozen members” for more than six months. Some
of the hackers are even based in the US, Reuters reports.

Like with X (formerly Twitter), you can pin a post to the top of your profile.
But you can also pin a reply to one of your posts, which I think could be a
really useful tool.

Meta started testing the feature last month, and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri
announced that pinned posts were live on Tuesday.

He says he marked documents attorney/client privilege even when he was not

you that is wrong? “Not that I recall.”

Confirmed: Sundar Pichai is about to take the stand in Epic v. Google.

He will be the first witness called today, says Epic attorney Lauren Moskowitz.
Right now, Epic and Google are arguing over whether a public blog post written
by Pichai should be entered into evidence. Google lead attorney Glenn Pomerantz
argues that the blog post, which references the Microsoft antitrust trial of the
‘90s, will be a distraction and is irrelevant to today’s case.

Moskowitz claims it’s crucial. I believe they’re referring to this Google blog
post. The judge is allowing it for now.

In a post on Reddit (via 404 Media), Rivian software vice president Wassym

the wrong build and wrong security certificate to go out to vehicles.

The issue, which affects the infotainment system, “may require physical repair
