ETSY'S CREATIVITY STANDARDS
Etsy’s mission is to Keep Commerce Human. We are the marketplace for original
items from real people. We stay true to this by connecting buyers with unique
items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by creative sellers around the
world.
This policy, as part of our Terms of Use, outlines the types of items allowed on
Etsy in support of our mission. By listing items for sale on Etsy, you agree to
adhere to this policy and our Terms of Use.
We believe that every item on Etsy should reflect the creativity of our
community. Items on Etsy represent a range of creative endeavours, from goods
carefully crafted by hand, to digital art generated with innovative
technologies, craft supplies that fuel inspiration, and vintage items handpicked
with care. We strive to be a marketplace where creativity thrives, special goods
shine, and the role of a seller is celebrated. As such, all items must
incorporate a human touch as outlined by the categories below. Additional

Made by a seller
Physical items made by a seller by hand or using personal or computerised tools.
Designed by a seller
Sellers’ original designs that are produced or printed by a third party or
offered as a digital download.
Handpicked by a seller
Vintage items, items from nature, and certain collections of items that a seller
personally selected and curated for sale.
Sourced by a seller
Items that enable buyer creativity, including craft and party supplies and items
that are personalised with a buyer’s custom text or image.
Etsy reserves the right to remove listings that do not follow our policies.
Sellers remain obligated to pay any fees incurred in listing such items.
MADE BY A SELLER
Physical items made by a seller by hand or using personal or computerised tools.
Items ‘made by a seller’ include only:
* Handcrafted items: Items crafted entirely by hand (including using handheld
or hand-guided tools like a sewing machine or table saw), from raw or basic
craft materials.
* E.g. A wooden chair built by hand with a power saw and sander; ceramic
pottery thrown on a wheel
* Hand altered items: Commercially available base items that a seller altered
using specialised handcrafting skills.
* E.g. Hand-embroidering flowers onto a tote bag; reupholstering a piece of
furniture with new fabric
* Hand assembled items: Commercially available supplies or components that a
seller attached together or combined by hand to create a unique end-product.
* E.g. Using jewellery-making tools to attach charms to a necklace chain;
sewing patches onto a denim jacket
* Items produced using computerised tools: Physical items that a seller
produced in their personal shop or home, using computerised tools such as a
laser printer, 3D printer, CNC or Cricut machine. These items may be produced
based on a seller’s original design, or using a templated design or pattern,
and are often personalised or customised to a buyer’s specification.
* E.g. Clothing embroidered by a seller using a computerised embroidery
machine; tumblers decorated with vinyl stickers printed by a Cricut
machine; wedding invitations designed by a seller using software and
printed onto stationery using a laser printer
The following are examples of items that do not qualify as ‘made by a seller’:
* An item assembled by a seller per the manufacturer’s instructions (e.g.
flatpack furniture or a Lego set)
* Adding simple, stick-on adornments (such as a commercially available sticker,
stamp, or rhinestone) to a commercially available base item
Listings for items ‘made by a seller’ must use original photo or video content
of the final product. When listing personalised or custom items such as
monogrammed or engraved accessories, your first image must show a finished,
customised item rather than the blank product or placeholder text (e.g. “Your
Text Here”). See Listing Image Requirements for more information.
Examples of items that qualify as ‘made by a seller’:
Handcrafted bowl; Hand altered t-shirt; Hand assembled keychain; Wooden decor
made by a seller using automated tools (laser cutter); Bust made by a seller
using automated tools (3D printer)
Examples of items that do not qualify as ‘made by a seller’:
A commercially available facemask with a single sticker added; A Lego set
assembled according to the manufacturer’s instructions
DESIGNED BY A SELLER
Sellers’ original designs that are produced or printed by a third party or
offered as a digital download.
Items ‘designed by a seller’ include only:
* Digital downloads of sellers’ original designs: Original content created by
the seller, sold as a digital download.
* E.g. A digital file of a seller’s unique graphic design, audio, text
document, or scanned copy of physical artwork
* Sellers’ original designs produced by a production partner: Original designs
created by a seller and produced with the assistance of a production partner.
Sellers must disclose that an item is made by a production partner, and
provide accurate information about where the item is dispatched from.
* E.g. A unique dress designed by a seller and reproduced at scale by a
production partner; a colouring book designed and illustrated by a seller
and printed and bound by a production partner; a graphic logo created by a
seller and printed onto a phone case by a third-party printer
* Seller-prompted AI creations: Creations that were generated using AI tools
(e.g. AI image generators such as Dall-E) based on a seller’s original
prompts. Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is
created with the use of AI. Read more about our stance on AI creations here.
* E.g. A fantasy scene based on a seller’s original prompt or inputs,
produced by an AI generator; a custom portrait of a buyer’s pet generated
using AI tools
The following are examples of items that do not qualify as ‘designed by a
seller’:
* Selling a bundle, collection, scan, or PDF of someone else’s work as a
digital download, except in the case of qualifying vintage items (see
“Handpicked by a seller”)
* Using a pre-existing design or choosing from a production partner’s
ready-made templates, except in the case of items personalised by a buyer
(see “Sourced by a seller”)
* AI prompt bundles

Examples of items that do not qualify as ‘designed by a seller’:
AI prompt bundles; A PDF file of a book that the seller did not personally
create or design
HANDPICKED BY A SELLER
Vintage items, items from nature, and certain collections of items that a seller
personally selected and curated for sale.
* Items ‘handpicked by a seller’ include only:
* Vintage items: Items that are 20+ years old, that the seller personally
curated or collected. This also includes digital files of scanned vintage
content like photographs, books, or patterns, as long as they comply with our
Intellectual Property Policy. Etsy may ask for additional photo documentation
or information about vintage items in your shop, such as their source, age,
designer, or materials.
* E.g. A Rockabilly dress from the 1950s; a copy of the book “The Little
Prince” from the 1940s
* Items from nature: One-of-a-kind natural items that the seller personally
found or cultivated, as long as they are permitted by our policies for
Plants, Herbs, Seeds and Soil and Endangered or Threatened Wildlife Products.
The item might have been mounted, potted, polished, or sliced for collection,
display or cultivation, so long as it was formed organically rather than
man-made.
* E.g. A rock; a geode; a shell; a fossil; a plant/plant start; a dried
flower
* Gift baskets: An assortment of different types of items that the seller
personally selected and creatively packaged to create a new, unique set. Gift
baskets must have a clear theme that ties together a variety of different
types of items that were individually selected by the seller. Generic
concepts such as “candy”, “clothes”, or “mystery box” (boxes with unknown
contents or containing a single type of item in bulk) do not qualify as gift
basket themes. Sellers must list every item contained in a curated gift
basket or box in the listing description.
* E.g. A “new dog parent” themed gift box containing an assortment of dog
treats, dog bags, leash, and dog-themed coffee mug
The following are examples of items that do not qualify as ‘handpicked by a
seller’:
* Reselling commercially available items that are newer than 20 years old, even
if the item is designed to appear vintage
* Reselling commercially available gift baskets, or gift baskets with a single
item type or from a single commercial brand, as opposed to a collection of
different item types selected and creatively packaged by the seller
Listings for items ‘handpicked by a seller’ must use photo or video content of
the real, final product. See Listing Image Requirements for more information.
Examples of items that qualify as ‘handpicked by a seller’:
Vintage jacket; Geode that a seller found in nature; A unique assortment of
dried flowers; A “Book Lover” gift basket containing an assortment of different
types of items that a seller handpicked, curated, and creatively packaged to
reflect the theme
Examples of items that do not qualify as ‘handpicked by a seller’:
Gift baskets with items from one commercial brand; Mystery boxes without a theme
SOURCED BY A SELLER
Items that enable buyer creativity, including craft and party supplies, and
items that are personalised with a buyer’s custom text or image.
Items ‘sourced by a seller’ include only:
* Craft supplies: Tools or materials whose primary purpose is to create a new
item by hand.
* E.g. Craft tools, such as knitting needles or clay sculpting tools; craft
materials such as yarn or beads; craft blanks (items that are not intended
to be used without further crafting), such as paintable figurines or
unfinished wooden rounds; and craft kits, such as a tie-dye or terrarium
kit
* Party supplies: Items whose primary purpose is to decorate a special event,
to give it a unique or personal aesthetic.
* E.g. Table decorations; balloons and streamers; Christmas decor; party
favours; gift wrap
* Buyer-personalised items produced by a production partner: Items created
using a buyer’s unique text or image, produced by a production partner.
* E.g. A t-shirt, hat, or neon sign that can be personalised with a buyer’s
name or special phrase

The following are examples of items that do not qualify as ‘sourced by a
seller’:
* Generic resold items that have everyday uses, such as plain furniture, stage
lights or speakers, do not qualify as party supplies
* Resold blank items that are ready to use without craft intervention, such as
blank t-shirts, hats, or tumblers, do not qualify as craft supplies
Listings for items ‘sourced by a seller’ must use photo or video content of the
items you have for sale, not stock or commercial images. See Listing Image
Requirements for more information.
Examples of items that qualify as ‘sourced by a seller’ include:
Indigo dying kit; Balloon frames; Buyer-personalised t-shirt printed on demand
Examples of items that do not qualify as ‘sourced by a seller’:
Electronics that can be used outside of special events; Resold clothing that is
ready-to-use as-is, without further crafting
