I soaked the roots for about 12 hours before planting in a pot. It is already bearing small leaves and has tolerated the past weeks excessive temperatures (90+.) I have been watering it well daily. I will report back when the shrub becomes more established. A very strong, hardy plant yielding bountiful fruit which is sweet and tart, great for eating raw or making into pies or jams. Fruit is edible once half-red, half-green and can hang on the bush a long time without going bad, somewhat like blueberries. After two years, the one plant gave us enough fruit for about 6-8 one- pint jars of jam every year. We planted in clay well-drained soil, full sun in open, with good compost, and didn't bother pruning or feeding, just light watering in dry spells. A lovely bush year-round. Watch the thorns! The birds left it alone, but we have a friend with gooseberries constantly preyed on by crows, so the thorns aren't a perfect bird defence. Makes a great low border around an open property, great source of vitamin C in good and hard times. Two thumbs way up! Yes, they are covered in spines, but the best things in life take a little extra effort, and are so worth it! Beautiful leaves, even without the fruit. The prolific 5/8 to 3/4 fruits are a real midsummer treat... Great for making a fruit galette or hand pies for a picnic. Love the old-fashioned tart flavor! Submitted 6 months ago By Deb From Fairplay, CO Do not buy from Gurneys More Details Describe YourselfMaster Gardener Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend Was this review helpful to you? 00 Flag this review 1 DO NOT RECOMMEND Submitted 1 year ago By Brad From NY Ordered with Red Lake Currant Plant plants, both came with moldy roots, they appear like they will struggle if they survive. I ordered back in January/February. Just got the plants in this morning 06/26/22. It seems that keeping accurate inventory counts and selling more than is currently in stock is an industry standard. I get that there are plant failures form growers, but it is very distasteful to me to sell items you currently do not have. Very disappointed with this purchase, I will not be back to gurneys for any reason. Merchant Response Brad, thank you for your review of the Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry Plant. We are terribly sorry that some of your items arrived in poor condition, and that shipping was delayed due to the items being on back order. Back orders occasionally occur when the plants are not quite to the size/health needed in order to survive shipping when originally expected. Rather than sending out inferior plants, we place the item on back order until the plants are ready. Customer satisfaction is our top priority, so one of our representatives will be contacting you soon with a positive resolution. I gave it a good faith effort, but 1.5 months later it is still a small stick with no buds. This happened on a prior order for a different plant (honeyberry), so not an uncommon issue with Gurney's plants. I reordered the honeyberry this year and got a lovely plant that I think will do well, so it seems like a bit of luck of the draw or their ability to deliver on orders placed. I mention this delivery issue and they possibility that they "scrap together" small plantings to say they filled an order because Gurney's has had a hard time successfully filling my last order placed in December 2021. Nearly 6 months later I have had items go onto backorder and then cancelled and refunded (a peach tree) or cancelled without notice or refund (raspberry plant). The last item that I have been waiting for - a blackberry - I have given up on, just cancelled, and will cross my fingers that the refund will come through and I can find a replacement plant elsewhere.
