But for the other candidates, just getting on the debate stage is an existential fight for their campaigns. Consider us your guide to the biggest event of the primary so far — one with the power to make or break a GOP hopeful. POLITICO has sorted through the Republican National Committee's complicated set of polling and donation thresholds to give you real-time updates on who will be on stage — and who will be watching from home. THE FIRST DEBATE: WHO'S IN? Date • Aug. 23, 2023Time • 9 p.m. ETLocation • Milwaukee Sponsors • Fox News, Young America’s Foundation & RumbleModerators • Bret Baier & Martha MacCallum The Republican National Committee invited eight candidates to the first debate in August. Candidates qualified by getting 40,000 donors (with 200 unique donors in 20 different states) and by hitting a polling threshold that sees them clear 1 percent in a handful of polls. But there was some controversy: A handful of low-polling candidates claimed to meet the requirements — including Perry Johnson, whom POLITICO initially deemed qualified — who didn't get an RNC invite, raising questions about how unpredictable and arbitrary the committee's decisions will be for future debates. THE SECOND DEBATE: WHO'S IN? Date • Sept. 27, 2023Time • TBALocation • Simi Valley, Calif. Sponsors • Fox Business, Reagan Foundation, Univision & RumbleModerators • TBA We’re still awaiting many details about the second debate, including who the moderators will be. But the qualifying thresholds are greater, which could winnow the field: candidates will need to hit at least 3 percent in two national polls, or 3 percent in one national poll and 3 percent in polls of two different early-primary states to qualify. Candidates will also need to have 50,000 donors (and will still need 200 unique donors in 20 different states) to make the stage at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
