HUMAN TRAFFICKING PREVENTION MONTH

Human trafficking response practitioners—and survivors—can benefit from rigorous
research findings. Each January, we highlight the latest resources that
NIJ-supported scientists and partners developed to support the field. These
resources can help guide efforts to improve and expand the system response, from
prevention to prosecution.

WELL-BEING RESEARCH IN PRISONS AND JAILS

Researchers are redefining what success means for those currently or formerly
incarcerated by reframing corrections research with human-focused outcomes
related to well-being, rather than crime-focused outcomes related to
reoffending. Several NIJ-supported studies offer evidence to support this
critical cultural transformation.

UPDATED BODY ARMOR STANDARD

NIJ has issued an updated standard for ballistic resistant body armor, tailored
to the needs of law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies. The
standard specifies minimum performance requirements and test methods for the
ballistic resistance of body armor used by law enforcement intended to protect
against handgun and rifle ammunition.

Review the updated standard.

TERM OF THE MONTH - COLD CASE

A cold case is a criminal case that has remained unsolved for an extended
period with no fresh investigative leads. The length of time before a case is
officially classified as a cold case differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction,
and the timeframe can depend on the seriousness of the crime.

Learn about this term.
