It’s nice to know that Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward has his coach’s back.
If more of Heyward’s teammates did, maybe they’d be getting ready to play in the
Super Bowl right now.
Regardless of what Heyward says about the team’s perceived (or actual) lack of
discipline, there were indeed problems with discipline this year — and some of
them fall on the shoulders of the coaching staff.
For example, Tomlin created the distraction arising from his stunning
willingness to look past multiple opponents in talking about two future games
(one that happened, one that didn’t) against the Patriots. Also, the
distractions that came from multiple failures of situational football (against
the Patriots and Jaguars) trace ultimately to Tomlin.
Nothing any Steelers player says changes the perception that the Steelers failed
to accomplish what they could have. Tomlin himself said the Steelers “should win
it all.” Although offensive coordinator Todd Haley became the scapegoat, Tomlin
is moving closer to being on notice. While the hot seat may still be years away,
Tomlin has several areas in which he needs to improve if he wants to end the
talk regarding the team’s, or his own, lack of discipline.

Turning Todd Haley into the scapegoat for all these problems will get
Tomlin only so far. The smart thing would have been to fire Tomin, give
Matt Patricia the full-court press (its a WAY better job than Detroit), and
then tell Levion to go pound sand and use the extra cash to build depth.
Best way to compete with the Pats.

When you’re right, you’re right.
The Steelers are good and have been good for years… but it seems like they
have under achieved to a certain extent.
The NFL is so competitive and they’re forced to live under a 24/7
microscope, but I think that many in the Steelers organization will look
back years from now and realize that they squandered some opportunities.
As the famous one said (and I’m paraphrasing) – to win we need to keep from
losing.
It’s OK when you lose because the other team beat you and you played well.
It’s disheartening to realize that you contributed more to your teams loss
than your opponent did.
The Steelers success recently seems in spite of themselves. They play their
opponent and they play themselves too.

Bottom line is Tomlin is a good coach – it’s unfair to compare him to
Belichick. But he needs to shorten the leash, especially his skill position
players who yap too much. Discarding an underperforming loudmouth like Mike
Mitchell is a good start.

Tomlin has an air of arrogance. He had his players believing they couldn’t
lose even though they barely beat many bad teams in the regular season.
They played in slow motion and got lucky to win as many games as they did.
Unless he changes, neither will his team.

discipline there.
On the other hand, his QB is very chatty about his coaches with seemingly
no discipline. Wonder how Tomlin (and Big Ben’s teammates) feel about last
week’s news involving Big Ben and Trump?

Agree with everything except the stuff about Haley. That guy had more
talent to work with than anyone else in the league, but his players didn’t
like him, his fellow coaches didnt like him, he was a horrible play caller,
he got into multiple bar incidents, and his schemes were overrated and
generally failed in the red zone. Considering everything he had to work
with and was surrounded by, he underachieved. Good luck, Cleveland.
Otherwise, spot on.

With all due respect you're saying that the person that is part of the
problem of yapping is the one that has the solution. It starts with him.
Until he shuts up and changes his ways of talking out then we can't expect
his players to. He's a lot like Rex Ryan in that way. One thing to be or
show confidence, especially if one is asked, then to freely come out on
your own and just make statements that provide incentive or bulletin board
material for your opponents.
The majority of coaches just don't do that.

It’s true that Johnson encouraged a showy, trash-talky culture. But Johnson
won two Super Bowls and his team won a third the year he left. The dynasty
of the ’90s, period. He took a 1-15 team and built it into a multi-SB
winner in 3 years, largely drafting and signing from scratch. One of only 6
coaches to ever coach back-to-back SB winners. And that was after he had
similar success at the college head-coaching level.
Tomlin’s Steelers won one SB the year after he joined the team (with most
of his predecessor’s coaching staff in place) and they’ve won squat since,
over the last 9 years, with one of the best QBs in the league.
This team has had enough talent to win it all every year. They keep running
into the same wall of indiscipline, and everyone outside of Pittsburgh – or
maybe even everyone outside of the team’s building – can see it clearly.

I do believe Ben has 2 SB rings, and after a fairly (even by Pats fans
standards) decent 13 yr career, he knows the pulse of the team. Asst
coaches are easily replaceable. 50,000 yd passers who have proven their
worth, are not. Bryant has done NOTHING to deserve a little understanding
from Tomlin.

Outside of the conversation w/ Dungy, please provide me where he has been
“yapping” about anything. He is an excitable coach on the sidelines, and
was a VERY young guy when he started coaching. He has NEVER gotten into any
spats, ala Jim Harbaugh,etc w/ ANY coach in 12 yrs. So please, provide me
where he has yapped. You just don’t like his character – Tomlin has never
trash talked anybody.

Obviously no one knows what will happen in free agency and the draft.
However, the AFC could look a whole lot different next year. The NE – Pitt
era of AFC predominance will be challenged. The Patriots are losing both
coordinators and have 17 free agents. The Steelers are going to have a hard
time getting back to this seasons status. That leaves the upstart Jaguars,
Titans, Bills and even Houston and Indy with Watson and Luck returning
knocking at the door.

If winning 6 super bowls, playing in 8, & having 3 of the winningest
coaches in NFL history over 50 yrs, is “dumb”, I’m sure about 28 other
franchises would love THAT kind of “dumb” ownership.

Haley has been scapegoaedt? The OC calls the offensive plays. Haley
prohibited Roethlisberger from calling an audible in any 4th-and-short
situation. So Haley called the abysmal fourth-down plays in the Jags game
and was responsible for the Steelers’ abysmal red-zone performance all
season. When an offense has as many weapons as Pittsburgh’s and
consistently fails to produce more than just enough, that’s the fault of
the offensive coordinator.
If anyone is being scapegoated, it’s Tomlin. He’s never had a losing
season, has the second-highest number of wins in 11 seasons in NFL history,
and just led his team to the third best record in Steelers history. Yet
people keep calling for his head. Should he stop obsessing over the
Patriots? Yes. We all make mistakes, and that–along with the onside kick in
the Jags game–was a big one. But it’s a mistake easily rectified. This
isn’t San Diego and Rooney isn’t likely to fire a coach of this caliber.
Firing Shottenheimer didn’t do San Diego much good, did it?

Mark Maddon is a local Pittsburgh sports radio host and he claims that even
Tomlin’s coaches show up late for meetings. He wrote an article about it
this week saying Tomlin should clamp down on that and ban social media to
start.

Look, I and many other lifelong Steeler fans have been saying this for
YEARS! Tomlin has won ONLY 3 playoff games in the last 7 years AND he’s had
a franchise QB the ENTIRE time he’s had the team! Cowher won 4 playoff
games with Kordell, Tomczak & Maddox as his QB. Tomlin cannot manage a
clock, cannot made in game adjustments, consistently has his team
underprepared to defeat sub .500 teams, let’s the team Divas run roughshod
all over the locker room, won’t control their social media distractions and
himself often looks past the opponent of the week, the James Harrison
fiasco, trying to trip an opposing player on the sidelines for which he was
fined $100K, on and on and on. Watch him on the sidelines sporting that
“Deer in the headlights” look! Case in point, when they had NO plan for the
final play of the Pats game! This has been going on for years, but it’s
good to see that Florio and others in sports media are FINALLY seeing what
so many fans have known for so long. These are NOT the traits, of a “Good”
NFL coach. He’s won games despite himself with a large amount of talent on
the roster. But talent only goes so far.

I don’t know if it’s a lack of discipline, a lack of maturity or both, but
obviously the formula they have in Pitt is a loser formula when it comes to
situational football. when you break it all down, that’s what it comes down
to and they suck at it. I don’t care if they hang on to Tomlin or not, but
as long as they do, Pitt won’t be a serious threat.

should be themselves. BUT what you can’t do is time-after-time make bad
coaching decisions in critical game situations.
it doesn’t matter what your personality is or how mouthy your players are

I think the people on here calling the Rooney’s dumb and Tomlin a
cheerleader are really incapable of being anything but trolls. The
accomplishments of the Rooney family and respect they get and give to
Pittsburg is immense. As mentioned above Tomlins record is second to only a

I came across LeVeon Bell’s Youtube channel yesterday where he sports an
overly obnoxious amount of diamond-studded gold chains, as well as throwing
cash around in a strip club, with the girls blurred out in the background.
Nice to know he’s got his priorities in order. That poor guy will have a
zero net work just like Terrell Owens soon after he stops playing. These
guys are proving to be just as undisciplined in life as they are in playing
football.

seem like that is what he is there for or why he still has the job. His
function appears to be managing the personalities Colbert has assembled and
that should be placing at least as much scrutiny on him as a GM as it is on

No, Tomlin is no Belichick – no one else is like Belichick.
But, not everyone wants to be like the Hoodie, and unlike the majority of
the commenters on here, a lot don’t want to cheer for him.
And not every player wants to be in his regimented, cold dreary system
where players are treated like interchangeable/ disposable parts.
Few players can fit into that kind of draconian, impersonal environment.
Can anyone see Ben sitting in one of their meetings and being ripped apart
by Belichick in front of his teammates?
I bet he’d give him the finger and walk out. Only Brady can take that
kind of constant abuse… it’s his fuel. It’s a unique relationship.
Tomlin treats his players like men – even if they let him down and act
childish.
He knows how to deal with them, and has never lost the respect of his
players.
Other than the Bryant outburst, the disciplining occurs behind the scenes,
as it
should be.
Tomlin isn’t perfect, but he is one heck of a coach. This feeding frenzy
to fire Tomlin is absurd, and I have to question the motives behind it.
Everyone needs to get off this ridiculous Tomlin bashing bandwagon.

With Haley they had a great offense and decent defense. Big Ben was the
difference.

Facts are facts. Haley is let go. Munchak drops out of Cardinals head
coaching race to stay with Steelers. Those are facts.
I have a lot of respect for Haley. But he is not the most stable human

The Steelers decided they needed to protect Ben from Ben. They hired a guy
who would come in and make the changes needed no matter the feathers he
ruffled. They hired a guy who could do that and call plays. He has a
talent. No question. Nothing but respect. At the same time, this guy is a
bit looney tunes. Sooner or later he wears thin. I think the Munchak thing
was the real final straw.
I think the Browns need him. I think they will be much better for having
him. But. His time in Pittsburgh was up.
I hope Fichtner can call plays.
