EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
After years of discussions, Japan has revised legislation relating to the use of
medicines containing cannabinoids, while also officially criminalizing the
non-medical use of marijuana. The move may pave the way for easier use of
medicines such as Epidiolex, for which a local Phase III trial started in 2022.

Finally responding to pressure from domestic physicians, Japan has started
discussions on the possible revision of long-standing regulations to allow the
medical use of cannabis products, while putting in place strict measures to
prevent illegal use or distribution.
TAISHO TO GO PRIVATE TO AID 'DYNAMIC' RESTRUCTURING, R&D INVESTMENT
The largest shareholder in major Japanese pharma firm Taisho, the founding
Uehara family, intends to smooth the way to the restructuring and expansion of
the business by acquiring and delisting all of its stock. The nearly $5bn size
of the deal would makes it the biggest management buyout in Japanese corporate
history.
EISAI TEAMS WITH THAI GOVT FOR DEMENTIA INITIATIVES
Eisai’s initiatives in Thailand mark the company's first attempts to collaborate
directly with government organizations to address dementia-related issues. The
major Japanese firm teamed up with the country’s largest private insurance firm
in 2022 to extend coverage to Alzheimer's and is planning to file locally for
Leqembi’s approval by March 2024.
