Synopsis

AT LEAST 150 EMPLOYEES ARE LIKELY TO BE IMPACTED BY THE EXERCISE, WITH THE
OVERALL COUNT OF PEOPLE LEAVING THE COMPANY EXPECTED TO CROSS 200 PEOPLE, THEY
SAID ON CONDITION OF ANONYMITY.

ET BureauNavi Technologies founder Sachin Bansal.
Navi Technologies, a fintech startup founded by Flipkart cofounder Sachin
Bansal, has started laying off employees across the board, multiple people aware
of the matter told ET.

At least 150 individuals are likely to be impacted by the exercise, with the
overall count of people leaving the company expected to cross 200 people, they
said on condition of anonymity.

The retrenchment is expected to largely impact the company's product, analytics
and technology functions.

“There have been layoffs in the tech team, given the push towards revenue
generation,” one of the sources said. “Also, there may have been some layoffs in
the microfinance division of Chaitanya (a microfinance subsidiary).”

Separately, several individuals from product and technology functions of Navi
have resigned over the last few months, including mid-to-senior level employees
and leaders, citing challenges with the management, one of the people cited
above said.

“Apart from the resignations, fresh layoffs have started this week, and we still
don’t know the entire situation yet,” the person told ET.

In a response to ET’s queries, the company pegged the departures on “performance
appraisals”.

“Navi conducts performance appraisals twice a year, which results in expected
departures from the company,” it said. “However, Navi continues to have multiple
open positions and the company is expected to continue hiring many new employees
this year, including a batch of over 150 campus hires who will be joining in
August.”

IPO delayed

The layoffs come at a time when the company has delayed its proposed Rs 3,350
crore IPO, despite receiving the green signal from markets regulator Sebi.

While it had received the regulator’s nod last September, the company has still
not hit the Indian bourses amid a correction in global markets.

Bansal owns a little over 97% of Navi Technologies that he founded in December
2018 after exiting Flipkart.

Currently, Navi Group includes personal and home loan platform Navi Finserv,
mutual funds platform Navi Asset Management Company, health insurance vertical
Navi General Insurance, and microfinance and lending institution Chaitanya Micro
Finance.

Overall, the group undertook around Rs 140 crore of writeoffs last year, one of
the people quoted above said.

In May 2022, the Reserve Bank of India found Chaitanya India Fin Credit to be
unsuitable for an ‘on tap’ banking licence. In total, the central bank has
rejected six of the 11 banking licence applications it received. The move was a
blow for Navi, which had banking aspirations.
