BECAUSE PARENTING ALONE IS HARD ENOUGH

ADHD HOME / ADHD Parenting

ADHD MEDICATION

Honestly, this is one of the hardest decisions I think a parent of a child with
ADHD must make.  Should I give my child with ADHD, medication?  Firstly, because
we are talking about a child, our child.  Secondly, because we are potentially
making a life-changing decision for them.  No one wakes up one day and thinks I
want to ‘drug’ my child, but what if that is the best decision you could make
for them?  It's such a tough call, especially when they have been diagnosed
incredibly young.  This post is in no way trying to sway you one way or
another. …

ADHD AND AUTISM

My friend's son has been recently been diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum
Disorder).  We had thought it was ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder)
because some of his traits were remarkably like my daughters with ADHD. Clearly,
we are not professionals which is why it should be left to the professionals to
diagnose!  However, it did get me thinking about what Autism is and the
differences between ADHD and Autism. ADHD is the most common coexisting
condition in children with ASD. Some studies suggest a figure of approximately
half of all ASD children having ADHD.  Equally, about a quarter of children with
ADHD…

TEENAGERS WITH ADHD

The dreaded teenage years!  My twins are now twelve, they will be thirteen later
this year! Cue dramatic music.  My girl twin has ADHD my son, her twin does
not.  But I will still have two children entering the dreaded teenage years
(dramatic music again).  So, I thought I would write this post as a pre-empt to
what I am going to experience if I am not already experiencing it.  Oh, and
experience what it will be like to have teenagers with ADHD in the same house
(dramatic… oh you get the picture!). Firstly, I decided to read up on teenagers
in…

PARENTING YOUR CHILD WITH ADHD

So many parenting books! I buy, and try to read, so many books; 'Parenting your
child with ADHD'; 'How to parent a child with ADHD'; 'Top tips for parenting a
child with ADHD'.  Normally I buy three books to every one I get to read.
Therefore, I have a stack of parenting books waiting to be read in the hope I
will discover a magical parenting solution.  Thing is, if you spend all your
time reading about how to best parent your child with ADHD, you actually miss
out on being a parent!  Shhh kids I am trying to read how to…

ADHD AND DYSLEXIA

ADHD is linked to many learning disorders (as high as 50-60%).   ADHD and
Dyslexia (a learning disorder) have a high comorbidity rate, they co-occur
significantly.  Whilst one does not cause the other, figures show that people
who have one often have both.   So, what is Dyslexia? What is Dyslexia? ADHD and
Dyslexia Dyslexia is a learning disorder.  It makes processing the written and
spoken language ridiculously hard.  How it presents is very individual, just
like ADHD!  Some people have trouble pronouncing written words, even when they
are their everyday words; some people having trouble de-coding a word (phonemic
awareness), splitting it…

WHAT ADHD FEELS LIKE FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW

As you probably know, I'm a mum of three children. One diagnosed with ADHD, one
undergoing assessment and one neurotypical child. I am literally on a mission
for raise understanding and awareness of ADHD. On social media (Twitter and
Instagram) I asked the question, 'What does it feel like to have ADHD from
people who know?'. The response was so overwhelming, I felt I had to share it
with everyone. For me it was an insight into how my children must feel and to be
honest, I cried. I mean I know the fact and figures etc, but to get inside a…

THE ADHD BRAIN

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder.  I wish more people understood this.
Simply put it is associated to how the brain develops through childhood.
Research has show that there are real differences in brains of people with and
without ADHD.  The ADHD Brain is both physically and structurally different.  I
was so interested by this I wanted to know in what ways, and if you do too,
please read on! Brain Imaging ADHD Brain Brain imaging is the best way to ‘see’
the brain.  Today we can not only ‘see’ the brain but also watch it in action,
incredible. fMRI - Functional Magnetic…

ADHD IN TODDLERS

Toddler Taming! Have you ever looked up definitions of toddlers?  I just did!
My favourite is, ‘Emotionally unstable pint-sized dictator with the uncanny
ability to know exactly how far to push you towards utter insanity before
reverting to a lovable creature!’.  This one pretty much summarises parenting a
toddler.  And this is what makes it so hard to tell if your toddler has ADHD?  I
mean parenting a toddler is damn hard, (to be fair parenting full stop is damn
hard!).  But when should you be concerned that maybe you are not just dealing
with a toddler and the dreaded ‘terrible twos’…

ADHD AND ‘MUM GUILT’

Where do I start?  Even as I start to write I feel guilty for almost venting
about what I am about to vent about.  But I do it in the hope that it will reach
so many other parents and let them, and myself, know that it is ok to feel like
this.  Like what you may ask?  Well, how I feel about my children with ADHD and
my mum guilt.  This is going to be honest and raw.  I may need a wine. Double
Trouble I have mentioned in previous blogs how my daughter with ADHD is in fact
a twin. …

ADHD AND ODD

ADHD ODD ADD HDMI So, you have just had your diagnosis of ADHD for your child
and then the Specialist starts throwing other initials at you, e.g., ADHD and
ODD!  As if ADHD does not have enough concerns for you to address, you will
often find that it does not just exist by itself.  ADHD (Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder) and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) often exist
simultaneously.  About 60 % of people who are diagnosed with ADHD with also
suffer from one or more other conditions.  Certain conditions are considered
secondary, i.e., triggered by ADHD.  For example, many children who are
constantly…

ABOUT ME

VICKI

Hi, my name is Vicki and I’m a single mum of three beautiful children, twin boy
and girl age 11, and a little boy age 8. Parenting is bloody hard and I’m a fan
of anyone who admits it. It goes without saying that I love them to pieces and
they are my world, but OMG its exhausting and never-ending!! Throw into that
equation the fact that your child has ADHD, Attention Deficit, Hyperactive
Disorder. I mean that’s a whole new ball game. So let's do this together!
