2015 IN REVIEW

Happy New Everyone !

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this
blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

> A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about
> 6,400 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 5
> trips to carry that many people.

THREE YEARS IN A ROW

Last week was the third anniversary of my Kenalog shot into my right shoulder. I
decided to save you from a long excruciating post and just summarize my thoughts
in a FAQ format. I hope you appreciate it.

Are you feeling better from last year?

Definitely yes, but not 100% my old self, I would say 90%.

Do you think that you ever recover to 100%?

I can see the improvement from year to year so I have less doubt that I will
ever be 100% again?

What remained from the many side-effects? What is still bothering you?

Coping with stress is still a problem. I’m often nervous with no apparent
reason. Occasional shaking of the core. Get lightheaded from time to time
following head pressure. Also heavy physical activity triggers some symptoms.

ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY

Two years. I decided not to use big words on this day, just state the fact that
today is the second anniversary of that damned kenalog shot which changed my
life entirely.

The good news is that I’m still kicking and things are not as hopeless as it was
a year ago. The bad news is that I haven’t improved significantly from last
year. I still have plenty of physical symptoms including tremors, occasional
racing heart, nerve pain, head pressure with dizziness. Blood pressure is now
closer to what it was before but I still experience blood sugar spikes. I’m
still anxious periodically, very tight and worry a lot. The brain fog is started
to clear off. I can trip emotionally very easily and can’t calm myself down for
a long period of time. I still can’t exercise as I used to. I gained a lot of
weight, more that I initially lost in the first 6 month.

On the other hand, there are positive signs. I was able to do two trans-Atlantic
trips last year – I was a big traveler before – along with a quite a few
domestic trips. Although I was shaky and nervous a few times, I was definitely
able to enjoy most part of them.

I thank to everyone who contributed their stories and status reports. I actually
met with Samantha last September in person.

The biggest issue was for me when my madness started is to find out how long
it’s going to take, and is this really caused by that steroid shot. I’m not
really sure how I would have reacted on finding out that there is no full
recovery even after two years. I think it still would’ve given me hope to know
that I’ll get better by time.

As today is my wedding anniversary as well, I would like to say thank you to my
wife for her support and dedication.

TO THE MARGIN OF A BITTER ANNIVERSARY

Today is the one year anniversary of a toxic injection which I received at a
routine orthopedic visit and changed my life forever. To make this gloomy enough
date even more depressing, it is my wedding anniversary as well and I’m not able
celebrate with joy.

One year. Unbelievably long time to fight for your life every day, to struggle
not to lose your conscience, constant fear of unforeseen catastrophes, and just
being sick all the time because something dangerous was injected into you
without the proper warning or even the chance to make your own decision.

It all started with an unexplainable shoulder pain and ended up a massive life
ruining event. The path to constant suffering was paved by greedy and ignorant
doctors, a broken healthcare system and untouchable mega pharmaceuticals. There
was no retribution, no support for the physical and emotional pain and obviously
no help for the financial burden it caused.

For a year, after realizing that the sudden change of health and mental state
was caused by one single dose of corticosteroids, I was looking for the holy
grail of remedy to make the constant state of agony somewhat bearable. I tried
dozens of natural products, herbs and vitamins and I failed. There were no
significant long term improvement and not even a false sense of well-being.

I am angry and frustrated. I’ve been robbed. They took probably years from my
life which was far from easy before the shot either, but now it’s merely only an
existence.

It started with uncontrollable anxiety, fainting sensation, heart palpitation,
digestive problems, insomnia and other threatening symptoms. Slowly depression
took over my life for 6 month. The things I used to love do to before, meant
nothing anymore.

So what could you expect after started to develop adverse reactions to a
corticosteroid treatment? Everybody reacts differently to this drug and I think
I’m one of the unlucky ones who defy the textbook and suffer for more than a
year. The debilitating symptoms started to subdue after 6 month. Recurring
non-debilitating symptoms are fluctuating. I discovered that I became sensitive
to barometric pressure change as well.

By now at least the anxiety stabilized to a certain level and most of the
depression is gone, but the other physical symptoms, namely the constant
dizziness and fainting sensation, tremors, sleeping problems are periodically
recurring. First I thought, after reading other’s stories that I only have to
live with this condition maximum for a year. I was wrong. I’m in constant
despair of imaging my state to be permanent and that I have to live the rest of
my life like this.

What really helps? Nothing but rest and relax, the outdoors, some light exercise
and love.

I’m sorry for this very pessimistic post but I wanted to share my true
experience and leave a record of my state of health after a year of my
mistreatment. Previously, I was one of the most optimistic, the glass is half
full person, but regrettably that also changed in the past year.

NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS THAT CAN HELP. PART TWO.

The dosage of nutrients must be correct for their body and herbs or nutrients
that stimulate the gland will only make matters worse. The healing plan will be
unique for each person depending on their situation.

For example, someone who is in the early stages of adrenal fatigue may find an
adrenal glandular to be very beneficial, but someone who is already in the
adrenal exhaustion phase is likely to have an exacerbation of symptoms from a
glandular. People in the early stages of adrenal fatigue will need a different
dosage of vitamin C and pantethine than a person with adrenal exhaustion.
Someone in the earlier stages may benefit from licorice, while the person in
exhaustion will become more incapacitated. Source:
http://www.holistichelp.net/adrenal-fatigue.html

I have to concur with all of the above. Recently I tried licorice, siberian
eleuthero and pantethine.

Pantethine

The two most important nutrients for anyone with adrenal fatigue or adrenal
exhaustion are vitamin C and pantethine. Pantethine is a more absorbable form of
pantothenic acid.

Source: http://www.holistichelp.net/adrenal-fatigue.html

When I first started taking it, approximately about 6 month of the Kenalog
injection it made my anxiety worse so I stopped taking it. I will try again
later, maybe smaller dose.

Licorice

I used to take it for at least 6 days continuously. It is not recommended to use
licorice if you have high or elevated blood pressure. I have good experience
with for short term and occasional use.

In general, low or occasional use of licorice root is considered by many to be a
beneficial treatment for adrenal gland issues. It is a natural and
well-established herb with a long history of successful use.

Siberian eleuthero

http://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatmentsandsideeffects/complementaryandalternativemedicine/herbsvitaminsandminerals/eleuthero

Very potent herb. Eleuthero contains other compounds, called eleutherosides,
some of which may act like estrogen or other steroid hormones.

Be careful, I have very bad experience with it. After taking the first dose, all
my previous steroid symptoms emerged back and stayed for more than a week. My
guess is because it elevated my estrogen level (typical high estrogen symptoms:
restlessness, being cold, elevated blood sugar). It seems that I would have the
same reaction to a small dose of corticosteroid as well.

NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS THAT CAN HELP.

These supplements can ease some symptoms of the adverse cortisone reactions.

First let’s start with the ones I personally tried.

Passionflower: Passionflower is used for sleep problems (insomnia),
gastrointestinal (GI) upset related to anxiety or nervousness, generalized
anxiety disorder (GAD), and relieving symptoms related to narcotic drug
withdrawal. Passionflower is also used for seizures, hysteria, asthma, symptoms
of menopause, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), nervousness and
excitability, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure,
fibromyalgia, and pain relief.

I’ve tried both  capsule and and liquid format with moderate success. I think
I’ve felt better from the capsule version. It definitely doesn’t have any
side-effects. It might help calming you down and gives you better sleep.

Calms Forte: Calms Forté™ tablets are composed of four botanicals long used by
doctors and health practitioners to soothe and quiet irritated nerves and
edginess without sedatives or tranquilizers.

I’ve had good success using it as a sleep remedy. It didn’t work as
tranquilizer.

L-Theanine: Theanine is derived from tea leaves. L-theanine may help relieve
stress by inducing a relaxing effect without drowsiness and may also possess
immunologic attributes. Theanine may also have effects on the cardiovascular
system and play a preventative role in cancer; however, limited clinical
information is available to support these claims.

I’ve also had good experience with L-Theanine. It’s safe, you can’t even
overdose it. In Japan it’s allowed to put in any food product. It has a great
calming effect.

L-Methylfolate: L-Methylfolate is a medical food. It works by providing the body
with Folate. It’s  bioactive form of Folic Acid, it acts like Trimonoamine
Modulator and Antidepressant-Augmenting Agent

I have very good experience with it. After the first pill I’ve felt relaxed and
natural again, even sleepy a bit. It gave me an euphoric well being feeling for
days. Unfortunately my body get used to after days but it’s effect is still
noticeable.  It works awesome as a anti-depressant. The only OTC version I know
of is available here.

Saffron: SAFFRON is as powerful as the antidepressant Prozac, but without side
effects. A surprisingly powerful treatment for depression is the ordinary
kitchen herb saffron. Just 30 mg of dried extract of saffron is as powerful as
20 mg of the antidepressant drug Prozac (see here), but without the side-effects
of Prozac (bad side effects of SSRI drugs like Prozac occasionally include:
increased depression and suicidal ideation).

Things I haven’t tried but might help. Ask your health care provider.

Kava kava: Kava, also known as Piper methysticum, is a tall shrub in the pepper
family that grows in the South Pacific islands. It has been used there for
thousands of years as a folk remedy and as a social and ceremonial beverage. A
number of well-designed studies have examined kava’s ability to relieve anxiety
compared to anxiety medication or a placebo. The results have been promising.
Although rare, case reports have linked kava use with liver toxicity, including
hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure.

SAMe: SAMe is used for psychiatric illnesses, infertility, liver concerns,
premenstrual disorders and musculoskeletal disorders, among others.

Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency – Quote: “Patients receiving corticosteroids for

the adrenals to produce adequate quantities of corticosteroids, or they may have
atrophic adrenals that are unresponsive to ACTH. These problems may persist for
up to 1 yr after corticosteroid treatment is stopped.”

SIDE-EFFECTS OF CORTISONE SHOTS

Cortisone injections are often used to treat orthopedic problems. By decreasing
inflammation, a cortisone injection can be a powerful treatment for many
conditions. Many people are concerned about cortisone injections and wonder
about the side effects of this treatment.

Please share your experiences and findings and don’t forget to include your
sources as well. Try to be as objective as possible and be nice to each other.
Please don’t use your real names or anything that can easily identify you.
