HELP US SEND ASCE TO PSWS!

Every year, ASCE student chapters across the country come together to compete in
regional student symposiums, and our Pacific Southwest Symposium (PSWS) this
year is going to be held at University of Hawaii, Manoa in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

Our club’s competitive projects are vital for supplementing the theory-based
civil engineering curriculum at UCLA. Through participating in projects, our 350
active members are able to get hands-on experience in an academic environment
that will help them later on in obtaining internships, research positions, and
full-time jobs. ASCE at UCLA competes in 8 events at PSWS (more than any other
school in the region!) and typically places very high in each event and overall.
Students work on these projects throughout the whole school year, and competing
at PSWS is the culmination of all their hard work.

For many students, PSWS is the first time they get to meet other civil
engineering students from both within and outside UCLA. Our club will be able to
guarantee spots to vital members such as those on build teams, but we want to be
able to give anyone who wants to attend the opportunity to, and we don’t want
cost to be a hindering factor that causes them to miss this opportunity that
they may never get again. The more money we raise, the more people we will be
able to bring to PSWS.

While our club typically has no problem sending our members and project teams to
PSWS when it takes place in southern California, this year will be especially
difficult due to the added costs of flights, hotels, transportation, and
shipping our projects.

The cost to send each of our members to compete is significantly higher than
previous years, and while we have raised as much of the funds through our own
means as we can, we cannot do it alone. We on the fundraising team been a part
of ASCE at UCLA since our freshman year and have seen the impact this club has
on all civil engineering students here, so it is really important that our
members can make it to Hawai'i.

Design and build a retaining wall out of poster board and kraft paper to hold
back over 500 pounds of sand.

Steel Bridge

Design, fabricate, and construct a 1:10 scale steel bridge to resist vertical
and horizontal loads and present to a panel of judges.

Surveying

Get hands on experience with land surveying using equipment such as total
stations, prisms, and pacing and present to a panel of judges.

Sustainable Solutions

Design a proposal for sustainable and equitable improvements to an underutilized
parcel of land, applying urban planning, land development, and sustainability
practices and present to a panel of judges.

Timber-Strong Design Build

Design, model, and build a small-scale timber structure with a focus on
aesthetics and sustainability for a panel of judges.

Transportation Design

Design a real-world transportation facility to solve a real-world transportation
issue using AutoCAD, traffic analysis, and environmental analysis, and present
to a panel of judges.

The following projects are service based projects or compete in competitions
outside of PSWS.

Construction Management

Respond to a request for proposal (RFP) with deliverables including a
construction estimate, schedule, project management plan, and site logistics
plan, and then present to industry judges.

Seismic Design

Design, analyze, and construct a 5-ft 20 story balsa wood skyscraper and test it
on a shake table against other schools.

Seismic Outreach

Work with local middle school students to teach about civil engineering concepts
as ASCE’s only community service project.

On behalf of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the University of
California, Los Angeles, we thank you for your continued support. Because of
your generosity, many more students will be able to attend this competition!
Thank you!
