From ground-breaking scientists, artists, athletes, and political game-changers, check out just a few of the greats: Roberto Clemente: Born in 1934 in Puerto Rico, Clemente, a prolific right-fielder, paved the way for Hispanic Americans in Major League Baseball. In 1960, he became the first Latin American and Caribbean to win a World Series as a starting player. Julia Alvarez: Famous for works such as In the Time of Butterflies and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Dominican American author Julia Alvarez has been a powerful voice in publishing since the 1990s and is now one of the most critically revered Latina writers working today. Carolina Herrera: From her beginning sewing dresses for her dolls in Caracas, Venezuela to dressing some of the most notable women in the world—including Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan, and Kate Middleton—Carolina Herrera broke many barriers for Latinas in fashion and became a household name. Ellen Ochoa: In 1993, Ellen Ochoa made history as the first Hispanic American woman to go into space. Born in Los Angeles years after her paternal grandparents immigrated from Mexico, she completed four space missions, then later became the first Hispanic American director of the Johnson Space Center in 2013. Evelyn Cisneros: The first Latina prima ballerina in the United States, Mexican American dancer Evelyn Cisneros played countless roles including Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, and Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. Sonia Sotomayor: Born and raised in the Bronx with Puerto Rican descent, Sotomayor had big ambitions beginning in childhood. From Yale Law to the U.S. District Court to the U.S. Court of Appeals, she became the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history in 2009. Controlled by Mexico until its independence in 1836, Texas joined the Union and became the 38th state in 1845. Next Steps: The examples of famous and influential Hispanic/Latinx Americans above are barely a drop in the bucket. From sports to politics to entertainment, think about some of the individuals who’ve made an impact on your life. Next, pick up a biography, watch a documentary, or do some research online and challenge yourself to learn more about their life and contributions.
