Big events, like economic recessions, social unrest, or global pandemics, can
wreak havoc on mental health. Even if you’re not directly affected—perhaps your
job is fine and you feel as fit as a fiddle—the constant presence of stress can
still have a negative effect on your mental health. That’s why it’s so important
to have a good sense of your status, so you can deal with regular stressors and
be better prepared to deal with the unexpected ones.

The Mental Health Continuum
Mental health is not just about being mentally ill or not mentally ill; mental
health exists on a spectrum. Along the continuum, people can experience mental
health disorders like psychosis and schizophrenia, along with anxiety, obsessive
compulsive disorder, and depression. When healthy, people experience mental
wellbeing to a degree that they can realize their potential, cope with normal
stresses, and contribute to society.

Acknowledging the continuum is important to help fight the stigma of mental
illness. Just like physical health, everyone has mental health of one kind or
another, and we can all work on maintaining or improving it.

Watch: Films often focus on the extremes, but mental health comes in all shades
of gray. For an explanation of the continuum of mental health, check out this
video from Mental Health At Work.

Where Do You Stand?
Evaluating where you are on the continuum of mental health is key to determining
whether you need treatments or interventions to get better. Here are some tips
for self-evaluating:

Keep a journal. Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Arman Fesharaki-Zadeh suggests that
writing down the day’s stresses will help you process them. And while you’re at
it, note your mood and energy levels to see if you experience changes over
time. Track your sleep. Getting sufficient rest is critical for mental health!
If your sleep is suffering, your mental health might be, too. Practice
self-care. Remember, self care is about helping yourself, not indulging
yourself. Make sure you’re eating right, getting exercise, and taking the time
to do the things you enjoy. Fun activities can’t get rid of your stress, but
they can prevent you from dwelling on it.

Most importantly, if you find yourself moving away from mental health, reach out
and get help. It is available to you, no matter where you are on the continuum.
Treatments and evidence-based interventions can help you move back toward
wellness.

Take Away: Mental health should not be taken lightly, even if you are well. Be
aware of how you’re feeling so you can maintain your own health and help
destigmatize the pain others might be experiencing.
