On Tuesday, University of Texas pre-med student Kendrex White was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 2017 campus stabbing spree that left one dead and three injured. The trial lasted only two hours. Both the prosecution and the defense had already heard enough medical evidence to convince them White was not in his right mind when he stabbed four people. But the Travis County district attorney thought it was important the trial go on. After the verdict was handed down, District Attorney Moore said, "I believe what we did today was respectful to the families involved here, to the victims, to the system itself.” The outcome didn’t sit well with family members who wanted to see White do time for the crime. Deanna Irwin, grandmother of one of the stabbing victims said, "There are consequences when you kill people, stab people.” But if White himself wasn’t to blame for the stabbing death of fellow student Harrison Brown, who was? Dr. Maureen Burrows, a forensic psychologist who evaluated White offered, "There may be bigger systems to blame like how to take care of our mentally ill better and how to get mental health more effectively treated earlier on in the illness.” Sponsored LinksSponsored Links Promoted LinksPromoted Links Enpal Tschüss Öl und Gas: Das ist die neue Super-WärmepumpeEnpalWeiterlesen Undo Woman confesses to killing her significant other, deputies discover decomposed body Undo Verbraucher-Ratgeber Eine Nacht in diesen Socken verändert alles - Sie werden erstaunt sein!Verbraucher-RatgeberMehr erfahren Undo Missing 30-year-old Pflugerville woman found Undo Student support groups at UT are now calling on the UT System to do more to keep students safe from each other, knowing the stress they’re under. Joell McNew with Safe Horns asked, "What are we going to do to be proactive to support students who are struggling with mental illness and the stress of pursuing higher academics? And that needs to be seriously talked about.” Meanwhile some family members are talking about suggesting the next legislature increase the punishment for people who commit a serious crime due to mental illness, perhaps requiring prison time if they recover from their illness and no longer require hospitalization.
