A CLOSER LOOK AT IDENTITY AND ACCESS MANAGEMENT IN 2022

Today marks the second annual “Identity Management Day.” Launched in 2021 by the
Identity Defined Security Alliance (IDSA) and held on the second Tuesday in
April, the occasion is an opportunity to educate organizational leaders and IT
decision-makers on the importance of key aspects of identity and access
management (IAM), including governance, practices, technologies, tools, and
strategies.

IAM by the Numbers
Effective IAM has become more important in the last few years, as hackers and
internal rogue users set their sights on privileged accounts that can contain
“the keys to the kingdom” — i.e., confidential and proprietary data that is used
to commit identity theft and sold on the dark web.

Despite the risks and costs, many organizations — especially small and mid-sized
businesses (SMBs) — are not being proactive. For example, the Devolutions State
of Cybersecurity in SMBs in 2021/2022 survey found that 52% of SMBs have
experienced a cyberattack in the last year, and 10% have experienced 11 or more
cyberattacks. Yet despite this frequency, 61% of SMBs do not monitor the full
roster of privileged accounts in their organization, and 20% of SMBs still use
highly insecure methods to store passwords, such as spreadsheets, documents, and
writing passwords down on paper. As the Identity Management Institute highlights
in its Identity and Access Management Report 2022:

Cybercriminals are constantly exploring new methods, which means the [IAM]
market must remain dynamic to keep up. Just recently, a series of major breaches
have again demonstrated that supposedly secure systems are often surprisingly
vulnerable…Many enterprises are also exploring IAM strategies beyond basic
authentication and access management. They’re looking at how their processes can
be reengineered to help them automate more of their operations and secure the
most critical data portfolios. This is driving an increasing need for IAM
technologies that provide solutions for sophisticated requirements that
executive management and IT professionals alike must address.

Understanding Identity Management and Access Management
To fortify their IT security posture and reduce the risk of a potentially
catastrophic breach — keep in mind that the average cost of a single data breach
has climbed to a record $4.24 million USD per incident — organizations need to
leverage IAM. But they must not make the mistake of assuming that identity
management and access management are synonymous. Yes, there is overlap. However,
they are distinct concepts:

* Identity management combines digital elements and entries in a centralized
database, in order to create a unique designation for each individual user.
These designations are monitored, changed, and removed as needed in order to
enforce security, while at the same time granting end-users with the
permissions they need to carry out various work-related tasks.
* Access management governs whether or not end-users have permission to access
networks, resources, apps, databases, etc. This concept embraces all of the
policies, processes, methods, systems, and tools required to maintain access
that is privileged within a digital environment.

Essentially, identity management is concerned with WHO an end-user is, while
access management is concerned with WHAT an end-user is authorized to do.

A CLOSER LOOK AT DEVOLUTIONS GATEWAY

Back in 1582 CE, France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian
calendar. The biggest consequence of this change was that the new year would
begin on January 1st, instead of at the spring equinox around April 1st.

However, some people didn’t get the news, or they didn’t believe it was real
(who said fake news was a new thing?). And so, they continued to start the new
year around April 1st. These folks became the target of jokes and hoaxes — and
hence, the tradition that we know as April Fools’ Day was born!

Today, April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It
also goes by various names and has various traditions. For example, in Scotland
the tradition is two days long — and the second day is devoted exclusively to
pranks that involve “the posterior region of the body” (we’re not kidding —
check it out here).

Suggested Pranks
If you’re a fan of The Office, then you know that Jim is always pulling pranks
against Dwight (although sometimes they backfire).

Here are some suggestions for you to tap into your “inner Jim” and pull off a
great hoax this April 1. By the way, we’re recommending “fun but harmless”
pranks, because we don’t want anyone to get hurt or fired!

* Bake up some yummy looking (but horribly tasting) caramel-covered onions.
Watch with glee as your unsuspecting victim takes a giant bite.
* Secretly gain access to a colleague’s autocorrect on the phone or computer
and make some creative change. For example, turn “the” into “tea” and “why”
into “what.” Then sit back and enjoy the festivities.
* Stop at your favorite bakery and ask them for an empty box (or if you wish,
just buy a box of donuts, and take them out). Put super-healthy stuff in the
box like celery, carrots, kale, and so on. Then hand the box over to your
colleague who LOVES goodies like cake, cupcakes, pastries, donuts, and so on.
Make sure that you (or another colleague of yours who is part of the prank)
are ready with their camera because you want to capture PRECISELY the moment
that they discover the truth.
* Raise the height of your colleague’s chair, and then tape a foghorn beneath
it. When they sit down to start the day, the first thing they’ll do is lower
their chair (and the second thing they’ll do is want to throw their chair at
you — but hey, it’s worth it!).
* Plaster your colleague’s desk/workstation with their LEAST favorite things.
So, if they really hate cats, pickles, and country music, then guess what you
need to do? Yup, you guessed it!

[UPDATE REQUIRED] IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RDM USERS

Our Development Team has identified an important issue with Remote Desktop
Manager, which will require some users to update their application. Please read
below for details and the resolution.

About the Issue

A tool that performs actions against the Remote Desktop Manager code base has
introduced an issue within the application. Specifically, valid license
information was not being passed along during the automated build process.

As a result of this issue, Remote Desktop Manager Enterprise/Free versions
2022.1.19.0, 2022.1.20.0 and 2022.1.21.0 will not launch after the following
dates:

Version Expires on 2022.1.19.0 2022-03-29 2022.1.20.0 2022-03-31 2022.1.21.0
2022-04-05

This is a snapshot of the Event Viewer message that affected users will receive
when attempting to launch Remote Desktop Manager after the above dates:

Resolution
Our Development Team has resolved the issue for all Remote Desktop Manager
versions starting from version 2022.1.22.0 and going forward.

Action
Users who are not using Remote Desktop Manager version 2022.1.22.0 or later
should download the latest version:

Users who are using Remote Desktop Manager version 2022.1.22.0 or later are

HOW TO SET INHERITED VPN AT ROOT IN REMOTE DESKTOP MANAGER

Have you noticed that some of the most important and impressive things in life
are fairly straightforward? As Isaac Newton said: “Nature is pleased with
simplicity.”

Well, today we will take a look at one of the simplest — and also one of the
most helpful — features in Remote Desktop Manager: setting inherited VPN at
root.

This feature enables you to set VPNs as inherited in a folder or under a root.
As a result, you can make a change to your configured VPN once, and it will be
applied to every entry that inherits their VPN configurations. Plus, the time
and effort-saving feature also works with Devolutions Gateway.

Setup Steps

Setting up this feature is (as you’ve no doubt guessed by now) very simple.
There are just 4 steps:

1. Right-click the entry
2. Go to Properties —> Type
3. Go to the VPN/SSH/Gateway tab
4. Select Inherited

Once you set your entries to Inherited, all your configurations will now use
your folder or root configurations. This means you no longer have to modify each
entry when you change your VPN settings.

that we can help serve their needs, solve their problems, and achieve their
goals.

Yes, I know what you may be thinking: “Every company says this!” And you’re
right. But here at Devolutions, this is not just an empty slogan. It is our way
of life. We never take the trust and loyalty of our users for granted. To put
this another way, when we make a decision about anything from a small blog post
to a sophisticated product update, we ask: “Does this benefit our users, or does
