I LIVE ABROAD

Do you live abroad? And do you have the Dutch nationality or the nationality of
another country in the European Economic Area (EEA)? Then you can apply for a
DigiD. Did you already have a DigiD before moving abroad? Then you can continue
to use your DigiD.

To apply for a DigiD abroad, you must:

 * have a Dutch nationality or the nationality of another EEA countryExterne
   link (EU countries and also Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein)
 * have a valid passport or identity card of an EEA country (please note: no
   driver's license)
 * have a citizen service number (BSN)
 * be registered in the Non-Residents Records Database (RNI)Externe link
 * have a mobile phone on which you can receive SMS messages
 * have an email address


GOING TO A SERVICE DESK (MANDATORY)

If you have filled in the application form, you will receive a service desk code
by SMS and email. With this code you can pick up your letter with the DigiD
activation code at one of the DigiD service desks within 30 days.

Please note: since it's very busy at some DigiD service desks, the waiting time
for an appointment can sometimes take longer than the validity period of your
service desk code (30 days). Therefore, please make an appointment at the DigiD
servicedesk of your choice before submitting your application for a DigiD
account. 

Bring the following to the service desk:

 * service desk code (which you received by SMS and by email)
 * passport or identity card of an EEA country (for which you entered the
   document number in your application)
 * citizen service number

Please note: not every country has a DigiD service desk.

Applying for a DigiD abroad


LIVING ABROAD WITH A DUTCH STATE PENSION (AOW)

If you are receiving or will soon receive a Dutch state pension you do not have
to go to a service desk. You can apply for your DigiD through the Social
Insurance Bank (SVB: Sociale Verzekeringsbank)Externe link. You will receive the
letter with your DigiD activation code at your address abroad.

I CANNOT COME TO A SERVICE DESK

Are you not able to come to a DigiD service desk due to the travel distance or
due to the costs? If you live abroad, then you can also receive your DigiD
activation code online in a video call with Netherlands Worldwide. Please look
for more information at DigiD service desks abroadExterne link. 


LOG IN WITH A EUROPEAN RECOGNIZED LOGIN METHOD

Another possible option for you is to log in with the national login method of
the European country where you currently live. In Europe, countries are obliged
to make more and more services digitally accessible for login resources from
other European countries.

Suppose you live in Belgium. Then you can apply for the Belgian "DigiD" (itsme).
This allows you to log in to more and more organisations in the Netherlands.

Whether this is also possible in your situation depends on which country you
live in and which organisation you want to log in to. You also need a citizen
service number at most organisations to be able to log in. More information on

OTHER POSSIBILITIES

It is not mandatory to arrange your affairs online via DigiD or a foreign login
method. Maybe you can manage your affairs in a different way. Check with the
organisation you are dealing with.

NON-RESIDENTS RECORDS DATABASE (RNI)

MOVED ABROAD AFTER 1 OCTOBER 1994

You are automatically registered in the Non-Residents Records Database
(RNI).Externe link.

MOVED ABROAD BEFORE 1 OCTOBER 1994 OR NEVER LIVED IN THE NETHERLANDS

If you are not a Dutch tax resident and moved abroad before 1 October 1994 or if
you have never lived in the Netherlands, please contact a municipality with a
registration facility for non-residents to check whether you are registered in
the RNI. You can access your data free of charge.

Please note: you must be registered in the RNI for at least 1 working day before
you can apply for your DigiD.


ACTIVATING APP

If you live abroad and have a DigiD, you can activate the DigiD app in two ways:

 * SMS: with a code sent by SMS (SMS verification must be enabled in your
   account)
 * ID check: with the following Dutch identity documents
   * Identity card
   * Passport
   * Driving license (issued after 14 November 2014)

It is not possible to activate the app with a letter, as the letter cannot be
sent to an address abroad. A foreign address is not registered in the Dutch
Personal Records Database (BRP). Consequently, we cannot check whether the code
actually reaches the right person.

Please note, has your Dutch passport or identity card been issued at a
consulate, embassy, border municipality or Schiphol desk? During the ID-check
the app asks you to enter some information from your proof of identity. Keep
your passport or identity card at hand.

ARE YOU UNABLE TO ACTIVATE THE APP BY SMS OR ID CHECK?

You need to apply for a new DigiD for Dutch nationals living abroad. Include
your phone number and email address in the application. After the application,
you will have to go to a DigiD service desk within 30 days to pick up the
activation code for your new DigiD. After activation of your new DigiD you can
activate the app.

APPLYING FOR SMS VERIFICATION

If you live abroad, you can request SMS verification in two ways:

 * Via the DigiD app
 * By requesting a new DigiD and visiting a service desk.

Please note, if you want to log in with SMS verification, you need to be able to
receive SMS messages from the Netherlands on your phone.

I HAVE AN ACTIVATED DIGID APP

 1. Log into My DigiDExterne link
 2.  Select Activate SMS verification
 3. Select Directly via the DigiD app
 4. Enter your phone number and click 'Next'
 5. Enter the SMS code
 6. Scan the QR code on the screen using the DigiD app.
 7. Click on Activate in the DigiD app.
 8. Enter your PIN code in the DigiD app.

SMS verification is now activated.

I HAVEN'T GOT AN ACTIVATED APP?

CHANGE PHONE NUMBER

I STILL HAVE MY OLD PHONE NUMBER

 1. Log in through My DigiDExterne link
 2. Select 'change phone number'
 3. Select the top option
 4. Re-enter your password
 5. You will receive an SMS code on your old telephone number. Enter the code.
 6. Enter your new number
 7. You will receive an SMS code on your new number. Enter this code.

Your phone number has been changed

I NO LONGER HAVE MY OLD PHONE NUMBER

If you no longer have your old number and do not live in the Netherlands, you
can change your phone number via an activated DigiD app.

 1.  Log in through My DigiDExterne link
 2.  Select 'change phone number'
 3.  Select 'Via the DigiD app’
 4.  Enter your new phone number.
 5.  Enter the SMS verification code you receive on your phone
 6.  Open the DigiD app and press 'Start'.
 7.  A verification code appears in the DigiD app.
 8.  Enter the verification code on your computer/laptop and click 'Next'.
 9.  Scan the QR code with the DigiD app.
 10. Enter your PIN code on the DigiD app.

FORGOT USERNAME AND/OR OR PASSWORD

USERNAME

If you have forgotten your username, you need to apply for a new DigiD. The
DigiD helpdesk cannot help you retrieve your username.

PASSWORD

Do you live abroad and have you forgotten your password?

 1. Go to Reset passwordExterne link
 2. Enter your citizen service number (BSN) and username

There are two ways to reset your password when you are living abroad:

 * Via e-mail and SMS (email address and telephone number have been added to
   your DigiD)
 * Via the DigiD app

RECOVERY CODE BY EMAIL AND SMS

 1. Select receive recovery code by email and text message
 2. Enter the code you receive by email
 3. Enter the code you receive on your phone
 4. Set a new password

Please note that the code sent by email is valid for 30 minutes.

You cannot choose to receive the recovery code by letter because it is not
possible to send a letter with recovery code to your address abroad. This is
because a foreign address is not registered in the Dutch Personal Records
Database (BRP). Consequently, we cannot check whether the code actually reaches
the right person.

RESET VIA AN ACTIVATED DIGID APP

Do you have an activated DigiD app and can you still log in with it? Then you
can reset your password directly via the DigiD app:

 1. Go to My DigiDExterne link and log in with the DigiD app.
 2. Select 'Change password/reset password’.
 3. Choose: ‘I can't remember my current password and want to reset my password
    via the DigiD app' and click 'Next’.
 4. Enter your new password 2 times and click on 'Save password’.
 5. Open the DigiD app and press 'Start'.
 6. A verification code appears in the DigiD app.
 7. Enter the verification code on your computer/laptop and click 'Next'.
 8. Scan the QR code with your DigiD app and confirm your choice.
 9. Enter your PIN code on the DigiD app.

Your password has now been reset.

I DON'T HAVE AN ACTIVATED APP

I'M MOVING ABROAD SOON

Do you still live in the Netherlands? And will you soon be moving abroad? Then
arrange the following before departure:

 * Download the DigiD app on your mobile device and add the ID check.
 * Add your mobile phone number to your DigiD account and activate the SMS
   verification.

This can save you a lot of trouble abroad. This way you can also be sure that
you will soon be able to arrange your affairs with the Dutch government,
healthcare, education or pension fund directly via DigiD.
