KOLKATA

Settle into your beautifully appointed suite aboard the Ganges Voyager II in
Kolkata.

Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is a city of contrasts and contradictions, and one
that has a lasting impact on its visitors. It is India's fourth-largest city,
and home to some of the country's holiest temples and finest colonial
structures.

As the 'Cultural Capital of India', Kolkata is said to have the biggest
concentration of artists, writers and publishers in the country. Although it is
the centre of Bengali culture, Kolkata is also a diverse city, with a diverse
mixture of languages spoken among its 14 million inhabitants. Kolkata was home
to two Nobel Laureates: Mother Teresa, whose humble home can still be visited;
and writer Rabindranath Tagore. The city also accommodates sports fans, with
Eden Gardens, the city's temple to cricket and the second-largest cricket
stadium in the world; and Saltlake Stadium, one of the world's largest football
venues, with an impressive crowd capacity of 120,000.

From 1772 to 1912 Kolkata was the capital of the British Raj, a legacy evident
in its superb colonial architecture, highlighted by the enormous Victoria
Memorial, and well-planned infrastructure. The latter half of the 20th century,
however, saw Kolkata enter a period of decline, with rampant poverty and
economic stagnation. It was only in the 1980s, under India's first
democratically elected Marxist administration, that the city turned the corner.

Today, visitors making the journey to this eastern corner of the country will
find a city that has rediscovered its pride and cultural identity, offering a
Bengali welcome warm enough to seduce even the most jaded traveller.

Kalna, or Kalinagar as it is often referred to, is a small town located in the
Bardhaman district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Nestled on the eastern
banks of the river Bhagirathi, this lesser-known gem is renowned for its rich
historical and cultural heritage. With its stunning temples, grand palaces, and

of the complex leaves visitors spellbound. The Pratapeshwar Temple, Lalji
Temple, and Rajbari Palace are some of the must-visit attractions within the

The town of Kalna is also famous for its terracotta temples, a unique
architectural style prevalent in the region. These temples are adorned with
intricate terracotta carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and everyday
life, making them a visual treat for visitors. The Nava Kailash Temple, Shiva

MAYAPUR

Few places of worship exist on such a head-spinning scale as what you will
witness today in Mayapur, the center of the international Hare Krishna movement
and home to the new Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, still under construction.
Most students of history know a thing or two about the British colonial powers
in India, but few are aware that the French had colonies here as well. You’ll
visit this former French outpost today.
Mayapur is a spiritual and religious locality, situated in the Nadia district of
West Bengal, India. It is situated on the banks of the Ganges and is considered
one of the most holy places for the followers of the Vaishnava religion. The
place is famous for its extensive community of the International Society for
Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), which has made Mayapur their international
headquarters and one of the largest centers for the propagation of the Hare
Krishna movement.

The history of Mayapur dates back to the 15th century, when the great Vaishnava
saint, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, was born there. Chaitanya's teachings based on
Radha-Krishna devotion has a profound influence on the local people, who still
follow these teachings and preserve the cultural and religious heritage of the
region.

Mayapur is a pilgrimage site for devotees from all over the world, as it has
some of the most important and significant temples for the followers of the
Vaishnava faith. The most famous of these temples is the ISKCON temple, also
known as the "Temple of the Vedic Planetarium." The temple, built-in 2006, is
one of the largest functional temples in the world and is adorned with some of
the most spectacular architecture, murals, and artwork.

The temple complex also houses several other shrines and a museum that showcases
the ancient Vedic culture and its contribution to the world. The place is a
perfect blend of traditional architecture and modern aesthetics, and is truly a
sight to behold.

Mayapur is also famous for its festivals, which attract a large number of
tourists and devotees from around the world. The most important festival in
Mayapur is the Gaura Purnima (Holi), which commemorates Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's
appearance on earth. This festival is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm
and is a sight to behold. Other important festivals during the year include
Janmastami, Radhastami, and Kartik Purnima.

Apart from its religious significance, Mayapur is also famous for its scenic
beauty and natural surroundings. The place has vast stretches of agricultural
land, and the soil is rich and fertile, which makes it a perfect destination for
organic farming. The locals produce some of the finest rice, wheat, and
vegetables, which are not only delicious but also rich in nutrition.

Mayapur is also a hub for traditional handicrafts and artisanal products. The
local artisans create some of the finest handcrafted jewelry, textiles, and
souvenirs, which are available for purchase in the local shops.

KOLKATA

The city of Kolkata is synonymous with the enduring legacies of Mother Teresa
and the colonial-era British Raj, both of which you will get better acquainted
with today.

Kolkata was home
to two Nobel Laureates: Mother Teresa, whose humble home can still be visited;
and writer Rabindranath Tagore.
