AND CRISIS IN FOCUS

Arlen Specter Center, Paul J. Gutman Library and the University of Pittsburgh
Library System present a Conversation with Evan Laine on his Book: Arlen
Specter: Scandals, Conspiracies, and Crisis in Focus



ANDREY AVINOFF: FANTASTIC VISIONS

This exhibition at the University Art Gallery explores the life and art of
Andrey Avinoff (1884-1949), the émigré artist, scientist, professor, and museum
director whose scholarly rigor and flamboyant creativity left an indelible mark
on Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape. Presented in collaboration with the
University Library System, the exhibition will span displays at the University
Art Gallery and the Hillman Library.

Highlights from the University Library System's Distinctive Collections
showcases original archival materials and high-quality reproductions from ULS
Distinctive Collection areas Archives & Special Collections, Center for American
Music, Theodore M. Finney Music Library, and Frick Fine Arts Library. Visitors
can examine Japanese woodblock prints by artists such as Tsukioka Kōgyo, view
early recording devices such as an Edison tinfoil cylinder, and learn about Dr.
Jean Hamilton Walls, the first African American woman to graduate from the
University. Other materials on display include items from horror director George
A. Romero's archives, artists' books, political pamphlets and campaign ephemera,
records of Pittsburgh's theatre history, selections from New York Times
best-selling author Bebe Moore Campbell's Papers, rare books, selections from
the August Wilson Archive, and work from locally born pianists and composers
Erroll Garner and Ethelbert Nevin.
