HOW TO MAKE YOUR DOG'S LAST YEARS MORE COMFORTABLE

AGING DOGS REQUIRE SPECIAL ATTENTION TO REMAIN COMFORTABLE.

Do you have an aging or senior dog? Does he seem to have a hard time getting
around? Caring for a senior dog is not like taking care of a young puppy. Sure,
he no longer has boundless energy and he doesn't require as much attention
anymore, but aging dogs require special attention to remain comfortable.

PLACE WATER BOWLS AROUND THE HOUSE

Water is a necessity for dogs, just as it is for people. They depend on us to
take care of them, so we should be able to provide this necessity and have it
accessible whenever they get thirsty. Place several water bowls around the house
for old Fritz, especially if you have a large house with several levels. After
all, it can be a lot of work for an aging dog to climb up those stairs just for
a drink of water.

MOVE YOUR DOG'S BED OUT OF DRAFTS

Older dogs catch chills more often than young pups. They also need to sleep a
lot more. Make Fritz's nap times more comfortable by keeping his bed in a warmer
area of the house, away from drafty windows and doors.

COVER THE FLOORS WITH NON-SLIP MATS

Elderly dogs may be prone to slipping and they are more susceptible to injury.
If you have slippery floors, you can help avoid your dog getting hurt by placing
non-slip mats around the house. Also place non-slip mats in the bathtub to make
bath time less scary for your aging dog.

TAKE SHORTER, MORE FREQUENT WALKS

Fritz will be a lot happier and more comfortable if he is healthy. This means he
still needs to get regular exercise, even if he is old. Take your senior dog for
shorter, but more frequent walks to keep him from becoming worn out while
staying active. The same goes for any other form of exercise; do it frequently
but in shorter bursts.

OFFER MORE POTTY BREAKS

Senior dogs need to eliminate more often than younger pups. An adult dog can
hold it for around seven hours, give or take, but let your aging dog out more
often as he grows older. By now, you should be able to recognize signs that he
needs to 'go', but if not, make sure he is let outside every few hours.

Finally, just like humans, dogs lose hair as they grow older. Keep this in mind
as you groom your senior dog.
Your aging dog may no longer be a young pup with boundless energy, but he still
requires special attention. It takes good care to keep your senior dog happy and
healthy, and he may have certain needs to make life easier. Make sure that his
last few years are comfortable by following the advice above.

HOW TO CALM AN ANXIETY ATTACK

5 STEPS THAT HAVE HELPED ME CALM MY ANXIETY/PANIC ATTACK.

calmclinic.com

Everyone's been in that situation when you've either had been having a panic
attack or anxiety attack. Or both. So, what do you do when you're having one?
These 5 steps have been proven to work.

1. Take a moment to breathe. Sometimes when we're having an actual attack we
forget to breathe. What works for me is to take a deep breath in and count to 5,
slowly. Then let it out and count to 5, again. It repeat that until I feel
better.

2. The 5-4-3-2-1 method. This method always works, I tell my friends to do this
too. Look at 5 objects and think about what separates them from each other.
Listen for 4 sounds and think about how they sound. Touch 3 objects, think about
how they feel. Identify 2 smells. And list 1 thing you can taste. The 5-4-3-2-1
method brings you back to reality and it's scientifically proven to help because
it takes your mind off of the attack.

3. Go for a little walk. Getting out of the environment that triggered your
attack can sometimes help. It also helps you get out of your head for a little
bit.

4. Talk to a friend or loved one. I talk to my friends because it gives me a
sense of relief. And it distracts me from the thought of my attack. And it's
nice to just get whatever you're stressed, anxious or nervous about off of your
chest.

5. Try to recognize you're having an attack. If you recognize you're having an
attack, it helps to realize it. It's a mental thing, I'm pretty sure.

Long story short, we all have panic/anxiety attacks. I don't think I've met one
person so far who hasn't struggled with these. I hope this article helped and
you picked something new up from this article.

Never be afraid to talk to a doctor or a professional if it gets worse.

WELCOME HOME THON, 50 YEARS OF FUNDRAISING

A RECAP OF THON WEEKEND

The Penn State community came together last weekend Feb. 18-20 to participate in
the 50th THON, a 46-hour no sitting no sleeping dance marathon. THON is the
world’s largest student-run philanthropy.

The combined efforts of donors accumulated a total of $13.7 million for the Four
Diamonds fund, which financially cares for pediatric cancer patients and their
families. Thanks to THON, not one family has ever seen a medical bill.

Due to the tumultuous year of pandemic restrictions and Covid scares, THON was
held virtually in 2021. With proof of vaccination, a negative Covid test, and
masking, THON was back in the Bryce Jordan Center (BJC) this year. More than 700
dancers stood at 6 p.m. on Friday, kicking off the weekend’s events.

The first national acts took place Friday evening. DJ Dosk and Chelsea Cutler
performed in front of a packed BJC, keeping the energy alive. Dancers enjoyed
their first meals and watched as sororities, fraternities, and other
organizations danced with them for the entirety of the night.

The famous line dance was introduced, recapping the year’s events in a catchy
sing-along dance routine. Some of the major events included Betty White’s death,
El Jefe’s opening downtown, the new arboretum project, and President Barron’s
retirement paired to popular tracks like “Toxic” by Britney Spears and “Good 4
U” by Olivia Rodrigo.

Saturday brought more special events, like the pep rally featuring Penn State
athletic teams competing in a dance off for the reigning title. Men’s soccer
took home the crown after performing in front of thousands of spectators who
were wearing matching white pep rally t-shirts.

Penn State head football coach James Franklin made a special appearance and
introduced LA Rams Super Bowl champ Nick Scott to the crowd. Other special
guests included Pat Freiermuth, Sandy Barbour, and Micah Shrewsberry.

To top off Saturday evening, national act Bea Miller took the stage to perform
her hit songs. The electricity was radiant throughout the entire BJC as Miller
sang her hits such as, “Bored,” “Making Bad Decisions,” “Feel Something,” and
others.

Sunday featured the Final Four, which are the final four hours of the 46-hour
marathon. During the Final Four, there is one hour dedicated to THON families.
This allows the families to share their stories and spark inspiration amongst
the dancers to keep going until the end. Then a “Where Are They Now” video gives
an update on the children who beat cancer and what successes they’re up to now.
This is followed by the “Celebration of Life” video, featuring clips of the
angels who are no longer with us.

To amp the energy back up after family hour, Go-Go Retro performed cover hits of
the decades. The band sang “30 in 30,” which debuted 30 songs from the 80s in 30
minutes. The crowd was re-energized and feeling good for the final hour,
ignoring the pain in their feet as they screamed “Come on Eileen” from the tops
of their lungs.

Finally, it was time to reveal the total. A year of donations all leading up to
this moment. The crowd was silent as the boards individually went into the air
revealing the numbers. $13,756,348.50. The crowd erupted into cheers and sobs of
joy as a sense of pride and shock swept over. THON 2022, Spark Endless Light,
set a new record for their fundraising efforts.

The 50th THON is now in the books and the Penn State community is ready to
prepare for next year to continue in the fight against pediatric cancer.

PLEASE DON'T ASK US IF OUR SERVICE MEMBER IS GOING TO UKRAINE

WE WANT OUR LIFE TO FEEL AS NORMAL AS POSSIBLE, EVEN IF THE REALITY IS THAT IT
IS NOT NORMAL, ESPECIALLY NOT NOW

Anxiety kept me awake last night. Anxiety kept my husband awake last night.

Weeks of following the news and watching events slowly unfold on social media
have led up to this moment: Russia has officially begun their invasion of
Ukraine.

My husband is not attached to a unit that would be one of the first to deploy.
In fact, he hasn't even been put on standby, but that doesn't change the feeling
of my stomach dropping when I got the news. That doesn't change the fact that he
was obsessively checking the updates last night once it hit the news. The
complete change in mood was felt in the room.

The future is unpredictable. We don't know if he will be leaving. We don't know
anything. In fact, we don't really want to talk about it. I'm sure someone in
both of our families will end up calling or texting at some point. I'm surprised
they haven't already. We don't want to hear, "is he going?" Especially not now
when we have a constant lingering feeling of anxiety about not knowing what's
going to happen. Nothing is going to help us feel better, not even a, "at least
he's not being deployed."

The truth is, even if your intentions are pure, which I'm sure they are, these
phone calls and texts just remind us that there is that chance of him being
called in to leave or put on standby. We'd rather not think about it or be
reminded of it. We want our life to feel as normal as possible, even if the
reality is that it is not normal, especially not now.

As of now, no he's not leaving, and maybe we can be content with the answer we
have, but we aren't. We know that usually we don't know things until last minute
anyways. Things could change at any minute, any hour of the day.

Trust me, once we hear anything you would be contacted soon after. Right now all
you can do is wait, just as we are.

5 TIPS FOR SOLO FEMALE TRAVELERS

TRAVELLING ALONE CAN BE THRILLING AND LIBERATING. YOU CAN GO WHERE YOU WANT
WITHOUT STOPPING TO HAVE A BOARD MEETING WITH A PARTNER OR YOUR FRIENDS AND
FAMILY. YOU’RE FREE TO GO WHERE YOUR DESIRE TAKES YOU.

Travelling alone can be thrilling and liberating. You can go where you want
without stopping to have a board meeting with a partner or your friends and
family. You’re free to go where your desire takes you. It’s easier to immerse
yourself in local cultures and practices when you’re travelling alone. Often,
when travelling as part of a group, or with some partner, it’s hard to “become”
a part of the place you’re visiting because that person or group of persons
keeps you tied to where you’re travelling from. Many female travellers have
embraced the joys of solo travel in increasing numbers. So here are some tips
just for them!

Plan Ahead

As paradoxical as it may seem, you need to plan in order to be free. Before
setting off on your journey, plan ahead. There are things that are very
difficult to do on the fly. Accommodation, for instance, is hard to improvise,
especially during tourist season. Flights, and even buses and trains can fill up
or sometimes, just not be available when you want to travel. In a time of a
global health crisis, you will have to adapt to local Covid-19 regulations. For
instance, in the European Union, many countries have adopted vaccine passports
to regulate what people can enter the union. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) maintains a travel advisory that you can consult before you
travel.

Get Solo-Friendly Deals

Travelling solo can be expensive. For instance, the majority of cruise liners
charge solo travellers a single supplement when they use a double room, and this
supplement can be over 120% of the normal fee. Other cruise liners, such as the
Holland America Line and the Norwegian Cruise Line, have single cabins priced
for solo travellers. If you have pets that you're worried about, Flight Nannies
has a service to deliver your pet to your destination safely and in a happy
condition.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

You don’t know the place, so you often will be more likely to fall victim to a
pickpocket than a local. This is because pickpockets are very good at picking
out people who are unsure about their surroundings and seem lost and lacking in
confidence. Be aware of your surroundings. This is even easier if you plan your
trip, perhaps even checking out the place on Google Maps, so you feel more
confident in your surroundings.

Pack Lightly

Well, you’re travelling solo so packing lightly should be your default position.
You don’t need to be lugging piles of luggage with you wherever you go. Just
carry the one bag, preferably with wheels, and an accompanying backpack,
cross-body bag, fanny pack or purse with a nice pair of sneakers from your local
sneaker store. Wear your backpack in front of you, not behind you -where you can
be robbed without knowing it. When you walk around, keep your passport in the
hotel. Ask if you can keep it in the safe.

Embrace Eating Alone

If you really want to experience local life, you have just got to go to the
local restaurants and eat the local cuisines, experience the dining life, see
how people interact with each other, and just enjoy the smells and noises of the
local people. So, choose mirrored lenses, grab your wallet, and head to a local
restaurant and become one of the locals.
