Who can use Willa?

Willa is for U.S. based creative professional freelancers, influencers, and
social media content creators that get paid by brands to do freelance work and
paid collaborations.

How do I get started?

Get the iOS app for iPhone and follow the instructions in the app to apply for
an account. Willa is currently only available on iOS.

How do I get an invite?

You no longer need an invite to use Willa. Get the iOS app and apply for an
account inside the app.

Do I need to have a company to use Willa?

You can, but you don't have to. Independent contractors can also use Willa. It
works the same way.

Where is Willa available?

Willa is currently available in the United States. To use Willa, you need to
have a permanent address in the United States, a U.S. based bank account, and a
U.S. based phone number.

Willa is funded by a team of entrepreneurs with a background in finance,
influencer marketing, and building popular consumer apps like Candy Crush and
Spotify. We are funded by EQT Ventures and several other investors. Prior to

We charge a small one-time fee for each invoice. The fee is 2.90%. There are no

Yes, you'd simply send two separate requests. Either way, the money is available

Yes, you'd simply send an invoice every month. There's currently no support to
schedule recurring payment requests.

How do you prevent fraud and is Willa safe to use?

Yes, Willa is 100% safe for both freelancers and brands. Data security is of the

I’m using PayPal today. How is this different?

Sending an invoice with PayPal is both easy and secure. It's very convenient for
your client. You're charged a small fee to receive your money.


The downside is that you're left chasing down your client and assure that they
pay you in time. This can cause stress, worry, and time spent that doesn't
create any real value.


Willa is even easier to use and as secure as PayPal. It's even more convenient
for your client.


Like PayPal, you're charged a small fee to receive your money– but the biggest
difference is that your money is always available immediately. The outcome is
that you never have to send another payment reminder, spend time or mental
bandwidth stressing out about unpaid invoices.

What happens after I request a payment in the app?

We deduct our fee, and the money is available in your Willa account.

Example: Your client owes you $1,000.

You send a request for the full amount.

We charge a small 2.90% one-time transactional fee to settle your payment.

The fee is deducted from the amount, and $971 is immediately available in your
Willa account.


Your client receives an email and is asked to verify that you have done work
from them and that the amount is correct. They can then pay the invoice on their
terms.

Your client doesn't pay any fee.

Yes.

What is a gem? 💎

A gem 💎 is an invoice credit that can be applied to your next payment request
to waive our small fee.

What about taxes?

One of the many advantages of using Willa is that your clients don't need to
file U.S. tax forms (W-2, 1099-MISC, etc.) for you.

🎗 If required, you can direct your clients to the client FAQ for information
written for them on this topic.

1099 Form

You should always determine proper classification of yourself based on IRS
guidelines and other federal, state, and local regulations. If you are
classified as an independent contractor, your client doesn't need to file a Form
1099-MISC for their payments to you through Willa.

Willa doesn’t send you a Form 1099-MISC, either. We do file a Form 1099-K when
applicable (to freelancers who are U.S. Persons and receive over $20,000 with
more than 200 transactions through Willa).

W9 Form

For their records, clients can request W9 forms by emailing us. We then handle
setting one up for you as well if required.

N.B. These forms are only for informational purposes and for your client's
records. No action is required on their part regarding filing tax forms.

Why don’t my clients have to send a 1099-MISC?

Under the Internal Revenue Code Section 6050W, your client doesn’t need to file
Form 1099-MISC for freelancers paid through Willa because they're not paying you
directly.

When they pay you through Willa, they actually pay Willa Inc. Willa Inc. acts as
a “third party settlement organization” under Section 6050W. This means we (not
they) are required to report the payments we remit to you to the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS) on Form 1099-K, in accordance with IRS regulations.

Even if you don't receive enough payments for Willa to file a Form 1099-K for
you, they still shouldn't file a 1099-MISC because they're actually paying a
“third party settlement organization” rather than you.

Can I cancel payment requests I've made?

Yes!

You can cancel any payment request up until the client has paid.

This is useful for situations where you for instance mistype the amount 🤦😬 It
can happen to the best of us!

When you cancel a request, the amount is removed from your balance.

If you've already withdrawn the amount, you may end up with a negative balance
or an overdraft. We will get in touch with you with instructions on how to
transfer the money needed to settle the overdraft. There is no overdraft fee.

Does this cost anything for my client?

No.

How does my client pay?

Your client can pay their invoice any way they'd like. We currently offer wire
transfer, PayPal, check, or card payment.

I’m based in the U.S. but my client is overseas. Can they still use Willa?

Yes.

Will my client need to install the app?

No. Your client can use their own payment process.

If my customer has their own system, how will it work with Willa?

Your client has the option to pay with a bank wire transfer, check, PayPal or
debit/credit card. Your contact person can pay directly or forward the payment
request to their finance team.

Do I need to convince my clients to use Willa?

No. They'll get a professional invoice sent from Willa on your behalf.
