An easy to use and versatile tool hampered by a defective A/C power supply.
UPDATE 6/24/2015:Amazon processed my return of the original unit with the bad
power supply. I was issued a refund with no problems. The replacement unit is
still functioning great.UPDATE 6/22/2015:Everything thing is still working great
and I've used this device many times in the past week or so without issue. I've
experienced no issues with the NEW power supply cord although I'll admit I've
been very careful and treated it very gently. Unlike other cheap adapters that
have issues with certain brands of hard drives, this one seems to be fine with
everything I throw at it. I haven't been able to find a drive this doesn't work
with. So far I've used it with:* A brand new Western Digital 1TB Blue 3.5"
SATA Drive* Western Digital 500 GB Caviar Blue 3.5" IDE* Western Digital 160
GB 3.5" IDE* Seagate Barracude 250 GB IDE that was removed from an external
hard drive* An old Quantum Fireball EL 5GB 3.5" IDE hard drive* An old IBM
Deskstar 10.2GB 3.5" IDE Hard DriveUPDATE 6/16/2015:I ended up reordering
this adapter and this time I seem to have gotten a working, non defective power
supply. As a result I increased my review rating from 2 to 4 stars. I didn't
rate this 5 stars because I had to repurchase a second adapter and then return
the one with a defective power supply. Now that I have one with a working power
supply I'm a happy camper. Everything is working as expected and I'll update if
I have any issues in the future.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ORIGINAL REVIEW:I ordered
one of these to transfer files from to a couple old IDE drives. I also hoped to
continue to use these drives for tertiary backups. The adapter worked off and on
for about an hour. Unfortunately the power adapter needed to power the IDE
Drives had a loose bad connection right at/near the Molex plug that connects to
the Hard Drive itself. The drives would randomly shut down or refuse to power on
when connected. Sometimes they'd work and mysteriously disconnect. Other times
they wouldn't power on. I noticed they'd work sometimes after fiddling with the
position of the cable. I grabbed my digital multimeter and tested power output
at the Molex power connector on the end of the power supply adapter.The 5 volt
side of the Molex connector worked fine. After messing with things I quickly
determined the 12 volt side of the plug would only output 12 volts if you bent
the power cable at basically a 90 degree angle. Let go and let the power cable
return to straight and the voltage dropped to 0. Clearly there is some sort of
broken wire or wiring issue with this power adapter straight from the factory. I
could probably snip the end of this and solder up my own molex end but for $23 I
shouldn't have to fix some shotty craftsmanship from China.Of course my only
option is to return the entire adapter even though only the power supply is
defective. I've managed to work around the problem for now by using an available
power plug directly from the computer's power supply. I'm returning this unit
and I'll try another one but I'm not optimistic based on other reviews
concerning the power supply.The adapter itself appears to work just fine on both
an old IDE/PATA Western Digital Caviar Blue and Seagate Barracuda 7200 IDE /PATA
drive.When this unit WAS working it transferred files about as quickly as I'd
expect via USB 3.0. When writing to the IDE drives I saw regular sustained write
speeds of around 80 to 100 MB/S. That's as reported via Windows 8.1 and not
using any sort of dedicated software to monitor drive speed. That's not blazing
fast but it's certainly faster than I saw using USB 2.0 and even faster than I
was getting with these drives connected to a IDE Controller card I was
previously using.I haven't tested the SATA performance just yet but I will
update this review when I do.PROS:+ Affordable+ The adapter itself provides a
great deal of versatility and can connect to both older IDE and newer SATA
3.5" desktop hard drives and 2.5" laptop hard drives+ A great way to
connect to other drives for troubleshooting or recovery purposes. If you are
always fixing computers of your customers, family and friends this is a great
tool to have!+ USB 3.0 and backwards compatible with USB 2.0+ Can be used with
SATA, IDE, SSD and SATA/IDE CD/DVD drives+ Includes a short sata cable so you
don't need to a use a longer one which would be inconvenientCONS:- The A/C power
adapter needed to power the Desktop hard drives appear to be junk in MANY of
these units. I read many reviews complaining about the power supply. I gambled
and made a purchase and had power supply issues myself.- I worry the plastic IDE
sata connector may wear out or break with time. It feels like pretty light
weight plastic. It may not hold up to abuse, misuse or repeated use.- Some
people may not like the fact that you need several wires or cables connected for
this adapter to do its job. For example, for desktop drives you need a power
supply plugged in, a USB cable to your computer and for sata drives a SATA cable
running from the drive to the adapter. Sure it's a lot of cables at times but I
don't find this too big of an issue. I planned to just connect this adapter and
then remove it when I'm done with the task at hand. Aesthetically speaking, this
isn't intended to be used as a permanent set up to keep a hard drive connected
to your PC all the time. It's not made to be pretty. It's made to do a job. It's
more of a device used for temporarily copying files, transferring backups or
performing rescue, recovery and repair on a drive outside of its computer. If
you want an attractive setup with less cables for permanent or frequent use, buy
an HDD enclosure or a hard drive dock! I'm fine with the cables because for
temporary use I can hook things up and put them away in a few seconds.- If you
plan on swapping back and forth with IDE drives frequently it may be a bit
slower process than you'd hoped. In Windows 8.1 Pro my IDE hard drives show as
grayed out devices on a USB mass storage device. Plug in the first IDE hard
drive and Windows recognizes the drives just fine complete with an assigned
drive letter etc. The problem is when I wanted to disconnect that IDE hard drive
and then connect another different drive afterwards. Unfortunately no matter
what I tried Windows typically remembered the first drive even after I removed
it. It would either still remember the old drive and show it as connected or it
would fail to recognize the next drive installed. I typically had to unplug the
USB cable and plug it back in with the new drive installed a couple times before
it would recognize the next IDE drive. Since the PC I was using this on only had
usb 3.0 ports on the back of the case under a desk, that was a pretty big
inconvenience.If I can manage to get one of these with a decent power supply I'd
happily rate it a 4 or 5 based on my experience at this point.

I already had a similar product (Different brand, similar appearance, but was
only USB 2.0 with slower SATA interface) that I was fairly happy with. When I
started getting a lot of clicking and hard drive errors, I found that the 5V
output of the power supply was drooping to 4.4V and lower - not good. So I
bought the Sabrent USB 3.0 TO SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5/5.25-INCH Hard Drive Converter
With Power Supply & LED Activity Lights [4TB Support] (USB-DSC9) because this
wasn't significantly more expensive than buying just a replacement power supply.
I was very pleased to find the following (Pros):
1) The Sabrent interface is compatible with more hard drive software than my
older unit. Certain features of Seagate Seatools were not available when
connecting a drive via the old interface, but they are with this one.
2) The power switch on the power supply cord. My old unit didn't have this.
Though I would have preferred the snap action of a rocker-style switch over a
slide switch, the ability to simply throw a switch rather and unplug/plug-in the
AC power cord is much nicer. Note that the power supply isolates the AC input
from the DC output. The grounds are not connected (>30 Megohms), which is
probably the best thing to do for this type of device, in order to avoid a
circular ground path. I really like the dual LED setup - one on the power supply
(means it's plugged into AC and live) and one on the switch, indicating power to
the drive connector.
3) The power supply's performance/regulation was excellent. I used a 4-pin power
splitter to attach a digital volt meter to the 5 and 12 volt outputs during
power-up and random read tests. I split the power to operate two identical 1TB
WD Caviar Green WD10EADS SATA 3Gb/s HD's (0.7A@5V, 0.55A@12V) and connected one
drive via the Sabrent USB adapter and the other to my PCIe 2X eSATA port in my
Windows 10 i7 desktop, and powered them up with the Sabrent's power switch.
During power-up, the 5V supply remained between 5.05 and 5.15V, while 12V stayed
between 11.8 and 12.15V. I then ran a simultaneous random read on both drives
using SeaTools and voltages remained even tighter. Regulation during single
drive operation was as good or better. You really can't ask for better than
this, as the power wires themselves will experience some voltage drop. The power
supply stayed plenty cool during all of my testing/use.
4) Performance. With the above two identical drives (sorry, I don't have any
spare 6Gb/s drives), the Seagate "Short Generic" test ran in nearly identical
time, with the eSATA port being only a few seconds faster out of 90 seconds - a
very minor difference. FWIW, the the drive that was connected via the Sabrent
USB adapter was actually consistently recognized/mounted by Windows a couple of
seconds faster than the one connected via my eSATA port. For this test, the
Sabrent adapter was connected to one of my motherboard USB 3.0 ports. For the
SeaTools "Long Generic" (multi-hour) test, the predicted time to completion was
about 20% longer for the Sabent setup.
5) Other:
- Both interfaces supported the Windows "Safely Remove" in the exact same
manner.
- While running SeaTools, the eSATA-connected drive's model number showed in the
form "WDC WD10EADS-22M2B0", while the Sabrent USB interface only displayed the
last half - i.e. "EADS-22M2B0"
- The Sabrent USB interface also didn't show the firmware revision or serial
number under SeaTools, while the eSATA connected drive did.
- Using HDDScan 3.3, both drives (interfaces) behaved identically, giving drive
information (model and serial number) to the same extent and the same software
features were supported, including S.M.A.R.T. and "Features" under the IDE
category, like Spindown/Spinup. Very handy here is the fact that HDDScan uses an
icon with the classic USB symbol for the Sabrent-connected drive, and an
otherwise identical icon for the eSATA-connected drive, making it very easy to
see which drive is which.
It's important to note that some of the above differences might not be
limitations of the Sabrent interface, but rather the SeaTools software or PC
hardware (USB 3.0 vs. PCIe 2X eSATA) that I was using. I'm just conveying my
experiences...
Cons:
My biggest issue with the Sabrent product is the fact that the included SATA
cable has come loose a few times (during handling - not when left
untouched/operational). The fact that it's only about 5" long (which I like)
probably aggravates the situation. Swapping the ends seemed to give a tighter
fit for me, as a different/longer cable might as well. Unfortunately, the
latching style cables don't seem to be compatible with this product - maybe next
rev guys? I'll see how much this bothers me before I do anything about it - a
different cable, some well-placed silicone adhesive, or a simple piece of tape
are all options - or just keep an eye on it.
All-in-all, this is one of those products that a computer geek cannot do without
- even if (like me) you have an eSATA port on your PC. No regrets with my
purchase. I definitely recommend this product, and am really starting to like
this brand.

OK, I am just a little bit techie, I can replace a DVD or add a daughter board
but I am certaonly not a computer technician. I am a fifty-something female who
is not afraid to open a computer and is willing to read the instructions. I have
2 drives to salvage, both are older IDE drives, one an external HD (in an
enclosure with a bad power supply) and the other from a desktop computer (also
bad power supply, and yes, I did have these on a surge protector. But not with a
UPS so I think brown-outs where the problem).
This is awesome tool, very easy to use. There are minimal instructions but they
were sufficient for me. I did need to change the settings on the HD to "master".
If you don't know how to do this, it is easily done by changing a jumper (google
it or go to YouTube for more info). My Maxtor HD had a picture on the HD itself
that showed the jumper settings, I just moved to over from slave to master,
connected this deice as instructed in the little paper, and tada! - I am
transferring the files over. I am actually transferring them as I write this
review. very easy. I am working on the external HD now, will have to break open
the old desktop case next and rescue that drive. The hardest part is waiting for
the files to transfer (I have a 200 GB drive to transfer, the next one is 500
GB).
I purchased this model instead of the other cheaper one (Sabrent USB 2.0 TO
SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5/-INCH Hard Drive Converter With Power Supply & LED Activity
Lights (USB-DSC5) because it is 3.0 USB for faster transfer, and can be used
with larger drives (up to 4 TB). The cheaper choice (it is just a little over
half the price of this one) would have been sufficient for my needs now but I
anticipate use of this in the future. .
Just be aware of static discharge. I disassembled the enclosure, then connected
the Sabrent connectors and replaced the HD in the enclosure during transfer to
lessen the chance of static discharge. You can also but a cheap static discharge
bracelet to wear, it is a useful tool to have if you even open your computer
case.

It does its job well but somehow I feel it is overpriced looking at its quality.
Plus it comes with a power adapter which requires a universal adapter to plug
in. The power adapter is made for the use in foreign countries and not in India.
Hence, I am not fully satisfied with this product. Packing was just a box no
care was taken to save it from damage. Fortunately it didn't damage but an extra
precaution would have been better. I feel its price should not be more than 700
INR.
