Amtrak train

PUBLISHED: May 22, 2024 at 8:56 p.m. | UPDATED: May 22, 2024 at 10:34 p.m.

Amtrak service between New York City and Philadelphia was suspended Wednesday
night due to downed wires in New Jersey, leaving hundreds of people stranded in
Manhattan’s Penn Station for hours.

Service was disrupted around 5:05 p.m. and halted both Amtrak and New Jersey
Transit trains after overhead wires fell onto the tracks in Kearny, N.J.,
according to posts made to X.

NJ Transit passengers can use their tickets and passes on PATH trains running
between Manhattan and New Jersey, as well as the transportation system’s buses
and private carriers, but one commuter said that won’t help him.

“There is no other way home,” Steve Ader, 67, told the Daily News. “They told us
to take NJ Transit to Newark, but there are no trains out from there, so what’s
the point?”

Ader, an accountant who works in the city, got to the major transit hub around 5
p.m. on his way to his home in Metuchen, N.J. At 9:30 p.m., he was among about
300 other stranded would-be passengers staring up at a board spattered with the
word “delayed.”

“I was on the train to New Jersey, and they discharged it,” said Ader. “They
cleared us all off, and then they did it again. They did it twice.”

Trains began moving south just before 10:10 p.m., according to an update from
Amtrak.

“I’ve been riding these trains since 1981,” said Ader. “I know things go wrong,
but no trains for over four and a half hours? It’s ridiculous.”

The cause of the downed wires was under investigation late Wednesday night.
