It gives them the view that you don't trust them and are more interested in factory efficiency than the workers themselves. If a worker is truly good at what they do, they will generally have a way of doing it that looks unsafe to the untrained eye but is still perfectly safe and controlled in the worker's hands. Coming in and micromanaging how workers do things all in the name of safety really takes away any joy they had in their work and turns them into depressed, mindless robots. All I can say is that I would never work for a company that implemented this kind of technology because I do not want to become that kind of person. The rejection would be based on the obvious fact that there is way too much oversight that exposes all sorts of privacy issues. I personally believe that we need to trust our workforce and work to gain a greater understanding of why people deviate in the first place, and ensure we work with them to ensure the correct solutions are implemented, I feel this technology is very “police state”. It is very impressive and has its place but needs to be used correctly in my opinion. You complain once and they’ll look into you AI driven productivity “safety” record and will instantly deem the worker unfit and fire them. And god forbid their is an accident they’ll just use this surveillance system to avoid blame. Sure we work you to exhaustion, but the AI say it’s because you weren’t paying attention as the cause of the accident….and it’s the AI making the “decision” and we can’t argue with the AI now can we. It brings an improvement in safety behavior but in the long term can create resentful workers with lack of interest for coming up with new ideas. Some of them even speculated about whether the company would mix the video information to detect potential diseases (the way they walk or stand) that could affect their personal records. Once the workers got convinced this information is only intended to their well being , things started to improve. People sentiment is something to consider permanently before moving further to these technologies considered as "invasive" or even "abusive" by some people. This has been designed for totalitarian compliance. Unless you assess every single task and then turn it into an algorithm that recognises that task as it’s being done then you will get poor data and output constantly. Machine - You haven’t got your gloves on Engineer - the piece of material is 5mm wide and I can’t hold it as no gloves allow me that amount of dexterity machine - you haven’t got your gloves on Management - the machine said you never had your gloves on, so this is a verbal warning. No technology can replace human interaction that deals with the reality of work getting done. Try creating technology that assists with eliminating risk instead of creating compliance. Company has trafic lights and interlocked gates. Cost a fortune. Why do we need it? Since they were eight years old employees have been crossing busy multi lane roads, no problem. However now they are adults and in the workplace, they can’t cross a traffic route with FLT travelling at 10mph….really? Sorry there’s a much larger problem here. It’s employees thinking their safety is reliant on their employer, that’s a huge part of the problem. Disturbing pictures of accidents scattered around the factory will be just as effective!
