A HEARTFELT JOURNEY THROUGH MINNESOTA’S HIDDEN SPIRITUAL HAVEN

By Raymond Baker

On November 17, 2023

In Main

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nestled in the welcoming embrace of Minnesota’s luscious landscapes are small
towns filled with stories waiting to be told. These towns are where faith
thrives, families grow, and community connection brims—to these places is where
our family journeyed, and I present to you our beautiful adventure across the
prominent spiritual haven of Minnesota, our enchanting home state.

Heeding the call of the open road on a bright Friday morning, we set off on an
exhilarating 2-hour drive from Spicer to the serene town of Little Falls. Our
first stop was the magnificent Our Lady of Lourdes, a stunning Catholic church
known for its breathtaking architecture, stained-glass windows, and tranquil
atmosphere. It was here, in the eloquent silence, we found ourselves praying
with soaring hearts and peace enveloping our souls. We shared quiet reflections,
awakening a deeper understanding of our spiritual journey as a family.

Post this spiritual high, we relished a hearty lunch at the local darling, The
Black & White, a comforting restaurant perched on the periphery of the
Mississippi River. Loyal to its Minnesotan spirit, the hospitality was warm, the
dessert pies heavenly, and the giggles shared at our table irreplaceable. The
kind-hearted locals, with their stories of faith and community, reminded us of
the universal human connection that binds us all together.

A short drive southward from Little Falls plunged us into the enthralling
historic town of St. Joseph. Here, we found ourselves winding down at the
intriguing Halter Park for a much-anticipated family time. Bonding over an
impromptu Frisbee match and a delectable picnic spread amidst the lush backdrop,
the day ended with the soothing sound of children’s gleeful laughter echoing
across the park.

Following a restful night at a local bed and breakfast charm, we embarked on a
delightful 40-minute journey to the vibrant city of St. Cloud. Home to the
awe-inspiring St. Mary’s Cathedral, we partook in their solemn Sunday service,
feeling the energetic pulse of the city’s deep-rooted faith. Our familial faith,
viewed through the lens of the larger community, was both a humbling and
empowering experience.

A surprise awaited us as we discovered the calming magic of the Munsinger
Clemens Gardens. This beautiful place, straddling the Mississippi, nourished our
love for nature and rekindled the essence of spending quality family time,
relishing each other’s presence against a backdrop of bright flowers and playful
butterflies.

To wrap our spiritual journey, we meandered back through the rustic charm of
Sauk Centre, Sartell, and New London where, much to our children’s delight, we
stopped for ice creams, waving hello to familiar faces, and soaking in the
quintessential Minnesotan spirit. These pristine towns, unassuming yet bustling
with life, symbolized an impeccable balance of faith, family, and community.

As our journey came to an end, and we drove back into Spicer with hearts full of
memories and spirits brimming with gratitude, we marveled at the many ways
Minnesota continued to root us in our faith, nurture our familial bonds, and
make us cherish our wholesome community. Amidst the tranquility of Little Falls,
the bustling faith of St. Cloud, and the warm communities of Sauk Centre,
Sartell, and New London, we realized that each town, each stop, told us a story
about the unity in diversity, love, resilience, and the irreplaceable importance
of faith and family.

It was not about ticking off towns from a list, or scenic photos, or souvenirs;
it was about embracing the spiritual odyssey that brought us closer as a family
and deepened our sense of connection within the larger community fabric. This
journey was yet another testament to the beauty of Minnesota—a tapestry of
faith, family, and community, where each thread held its own tale yet wove into
the beautiful larger narrative of life.

In this intimate exploration of Minnesota, we discovered the shared pulse of
love and spirituality beating harmoniously throughout these enchanting towns. We
were reminded of our roots and the values we hold dear as a family—faith, love,
and the strength of community. A journey we intend to repeat, to discover more
hidden gems, connect with more communities, and strengthen our bonds of faith
and family. Because, at the end of the day, it’s not just about the destination,
it’s about the precious journey we embark on as a family—our journey of faith
and love in the robust heartland of Minnesota.

TRACING THE TRACKS OF FAITH, FAMILY, AND FELLOWSHIP ON MINNESOTA’S GREAT RIVER
ROAD

By Raymond Baker

On November 16, 2023

In Main

Nestled in the heart of our beloved Minnesota, spun like a majestic thread
through picturesque landscapes, is the enigmatic Great River Road. This
exquisite scenic byway with its myriad hamlets and bustling towns has been our
canvas for creating numerous cherished memories.

One quiet weekend, our family decided to explore this enchanting trail, an
adventure layered with an invisibly stitched fabric of faith, family, and
community. As we started our journey from Spicer, the inviting spring weather
made the pathway to St. Cloud feel not the least bit tedious, despite the
90-minute drive.

UNRAVELING THE TAPESTRY OF ST. CLOUD’S RICH HERITAGE

St. Cloud, with its harmonious blend of modernity and history, embraced us
warmly. Carved into the heart of this town is the resplendent St. Mary’s
Cathedral, an ode to the community’s deep-rooted faith. Its high altar of
Carrara marble, coupled with stained glass adorned windows, narrated countless
tales of sanctity and devotion. The children, although not old enough to grasp
these concepts fully, looked on with sheer wonder, their innocence mirrored in
the glinting colors filtering through the age-old glass. Ian’s Irish Pub, a
stone’s throw from the cathedral, provided the much-needed noontide sustenance.
The pub’s comfort food and the family’s shared laughter augmented the warmth.

How faith, intertwined with community and heritage, manifest in places like St.
Cloud, is a humbling experience. But it was time to move closer to the
Mississippi to experience Minnesota’s tenderly nurtured community life.

THE GRIT AND GRACE OF RED WING

A scenic drive down the Great River Road stretched before us for the next couple
of hours as we traveled towards the quaint town of Red Wing. Known for its
rugged boots, the spirit of the community here is as sturdy and resilient as
their famous footwear. We spent the afternoon marveling at the shoe behemoth,
Red Wing Shoes, its museum sketching a portrait of workmanship, perseverance,
and the tireless endeavors of an entire community.

Our children clambered joyfully onto the World’s Largest Boot, their eyes filled
with awe, their hearts echoing the colossal tales this boot could tell. After
the day’s exploits, the St. James Hotel offered a warm bed and a hearty meal,
its bless-you hospitality serenading tired souls into peaceful slumber.

So, we slept on tales of unity and endeavour, underneath the roof crafted with
the strength of a thousand hearts in Red Wing.

CLOSING THE HEARTFELT JOURNEY IN WINONA

An early morning detour towards Winona, traversing the city, led us to the
enlightening enclave that is the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. The stained
glass masterpieces, the virgin’s gaze, the pristine air everything whispered old
tales of devotion, faith, and love. One cannot help but feel a divine sense of
tranquility here.

Then, amidst the hushed reverence, I watched my little ones reach out
instinctively towards each other, clasping small hands within an ageless
edifice. It was in that instant, I was reminded of the unspoken power of faith –
not just in its religious manifestations, but also in fostering familial love
and community bonds.

WHISPERS FROM YESTERYEARS, ECHOES FOR TOMORROW

As we retraced our steps back to Spicer, our hearts ached for the simple beauty
of faith, family, and community that we had witnessed. The journey taught us how
these elements breathe life into towns and landscapes. But most importantly, it
taught us how these elements, bound in an eternal braid, create lasting memories
and beautiful impressions on young minds.

Seeing little ones grasp the value of unity, workmanship, and devotion in
unexpected places around their own home state, was an overwhelming experience.
We returned home, our hearts filled with warmth, our understanding of faith,
family, and community, infinitely deepened.

As anonymous whispers of Minnesota, narrating tales of exploration and
reflection throughout the state, we will continue our quest, our stories
hopefully resonating with families like ours.

So here’s to faith, family, and community. Here’s to Minnesota, the land of a
thousand lakes, a million memories, and uncountable tales of love and devotion.
And here’s to more such adventures, where we move forth to create fond
impressions on Minnesota’s loving canvas.

HARVEST BLESSINGS: A CLOSER LOOK AT FALL FESTIVITIES AROUND MINNESOTA

By Raymond Baker

On November 15, 2023

In Main

As the leaves begin to change colors and the crisp air of fall permeates our
quaint Spicer neighborhood, I can’t help but feel a warm sense of joy and
gratitude for the beauty around us. Each season brings with it a new flurry of
activities that bring our community together, and in my humble opinion, none
more so than the vibrant harvest celebrations we partake in as the summer draws
to a close.

One of our family’s most cherished autumnal traditions is a day trip to the
charming Apple Jack Orchards in Delano, a breezy two-hour drive away offering
picture-perfect views of Minnesota’s beautiful countryside. Invoking the essence
of reunion, the sight of families, ours included, harvesting apples under the
guidance of friendly farmers is a picturesque memory every year. As I watch my
children learning about the significance of harvest and tasting crisp, freshly
picked apples, my heart swells with a gratifying blend of love and faith. We
take turns tasting the varieties of apple cider and we unanimously agree that
the honeycrisp apple cider is a must try.

Venturing further into our tradition, our children participate in the pie-making
workshop at the Pillsbury A-Mill in Minneapolis. Though a longer drive, it
allows us to revel in the scenic splendor of the Minnesota River Valley, making
the journey itself a part of our adventure. The children’s excited chattering
about their pie ideas is a sound as comforting to me as the sound of Sunday
morning church bells. I could never express the immense pride we feel watching
our kids, aprons on and rolling pins in hand, working diligently to craft their
treats. There’s something uniquely beautiful about the lessons of patience and
dedication that kneading pie dough imparts. The cherry on top? The warm apple
pies we come home with, their scent filling our car all the way back to Spicer.

Yet, the beauty of this season lies not just these trips, but also in our local
community’s excellent efforts to celebrate fall. The annual Spicer Fall Festival
is always a highlight on our family calendar. The sound of laughter and the
smell of pumpkin spice against the backdrop of our stunning Green Lake make for
an unbeatable combination. Our family participates in the pumpkin carving
contest and every year our designs evolve, reflecting not just the age of our
children, but their creativity, humor and spirit. I cherish these beautiful
keepsakes more than any journals or photos.

We end our festivities with a trip to Bemidji, appreciated by many for the
beautiful Lake Bemidji State Park, but for us, it has a deeper meaning. We rent
a small lakeside cabin and switch off from the world. This time is sacred, meant
for bonding, reflecting, and giving thanks. It’s during these calm and peaceful
nights that I feel an overwhelming sense of contentment. As we huddle around the
fireplace, sharing stories, sipping hot chocolate, and occasionally going out
for stargazing, I find our family enriched by these shared experiences and our
hearts filled with gratitude.

So, as the marigold and vermilion hues of autumn seep into our lives, I am
thankful. The fall season and the festivities it brings remind us to cherish
every moment, work together as a family, and be grateful for the community that
supports us. It encourages us to sow seeds of kindness, faith, and love in our
hearts just like farmers sow their seeds in the awaiting earth.

The true beauty of the harvest season isn’t just in the food we eat or the views
we capture, but in the moments we share as families and communities. Harvest
blessings aren’t merely about reaping the fruits of the earth, but reaping the
joys of togetherness. So here’s to another wonderful fall season, filled with
the sweetness of apple pies, the warmth of community festivals, and the
immeasurable blessing of family.

A WINTER WEEKEND AWAY: MECHANICS OF BEAUTY AND CHARITY IN ROCHESTER

By Raymond Baker

On November 14, 2023

As fall seemingly passed in the blink of an eye, the snow began to blanket
Spicer. As a family, we find joy in each season Minnesota grants us – albeit,
some more bearable than others.

Our tradition, like many Minnesota families, is to do a weekend getaway in early
winter. This year, we decided on Rochester, a city that’s slightly less than
three hours’ drive from Spicer. With its reputable medical community factoring
into the city’s warm and compassionate character, it seemed an ideal backdrop
for exploring charity alongside community, all under the guise of a fun family
trip.

We started our weekend getaway on a cold Saturday morning, piling into our
rusting but faithful family vehicle with snacks, games, and an audacious spirit
for the impending adventure. The landscape outside our frosty windows played
host to a kaleidoscope of snow-dusted pines and shimmering icy lakes with the
sun casting a breathtaking luminescent glow on everything it touched. The beauty
of God’s creation was in full display and moments like this always served as a
gentle reminder of my faith in a Higher Power.

Our first stop in Rochester was, The Quarry Hill Nature Center. As I watched my
family explore together, laughter bouncing off the tall trees, it struck me how
these shared experiences shape us. We bundled up, crunching through the snowy
trails, remarking over animal footprints, and sharing hot cocoa in the crisp
outdoor air. The time we spent outdoors, embracing Minnesota’s brutal yet
beautiful winters, was undeniably bonding.

As the day waned, we headed to The Canadian Honker, a cozy family-run restaurant
that radiates warmth in the frosty Minnesota winters. We huddled together,
thawing our cold hands and noses, warmed by not just the hearty food but the
customer-first ethos that the restaurant oozed. It was a conscious exercise of
community building, and it made me deeply appreciate the locals who run these
establishments while juggling their own families and responsibilities – their
love and dedication apparent in their comforting meals and welcoming smiles.

With the Sunday sun streaming through our hotel window, we decided to seize the
opportunity to explore an important pillar of Rochester, the well-respected Mayo
Clinic. Their unique public-art walking tour exhibiting a mix of international
and local art intrigued us. Moving through the clinic, the fusion of art and
healing felt sacred. As we admired the artworks, a quiet hush around us, I
couldn’t help but think about the countless individuals who have walked these
corridors, carrying burdens of illness and anxieties, yet experiencing such
exceptional care in this historic sanctuary of healing. A whispered prayer
escaped my lips for every soul that had passed through and every life that was
changed within these walls.

Before ending our Rochester adventure, we made time to visit the Dorothy Day
Hospitality House, Rochester’s oldest homeless shelter. We’d spoken to our
children about the importance of giving, and this was an excellent opportunity
to imbibe charity into their conscious reality. A few earlier visits to
Salvation Army stores in Spicer and nearby Willmar had seen us assembling care
packages- mittens, socks, and canned food. Each of us carried a package to the
shelter, spreading a little bit of warmth to some who might need it the most.
The gratitude and humility we felt in serving others was overwhelming and left
us with valuable reflections on the true essence of community.

As we made our way home, beneath the vast Minnesota sky, awash with hues of red
and gold, I couldn’t help but feel profoundly thankful. A weekend infused with
the beauty of nature, the significance of community, and the grace of giving
cemented our faith and brought us closer as a family. The tranquility that
pervaded our hearts was our biggest takeaway from Rochester, a city that
demonstrated community, charity, and conservation at every turn.

Weekend trips like these remind me how blessed I am to raise a family in this
beautiful state, where each city offers a tale of its own, interlaced with the
timeless values we cherish — Faith, Family, and Community. A weekend away may
just be a pinprick on the canvas of life, but these tiny pinpricks collectively
shape who we are, and more importantly, who we become.

Rochester offered us memories sprinkled with nature’s beauty, bonds nurtured
with love, and a community that warmed our hearts with its hospitality – a
testament that the spirit of Minnesota lies not just in its picturesque
landscapes, but more so in the rich tapestry of its gracious people.

FAITH, FAMILY, AND A TRIP TO STILLWATER: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE SOUL OF MINNESOTA

By Raymond Baker

The beauty of Minnesota sprawls far and wide, extending beyond its vast forests,
sparkling lakes, vibrant cities, and resourceful people. Sometimes, however, you
need to delve just a little deeper. To see the magnificence that is often
overlooked in the routine of our everyday lives, you need to step away from the
familiar. This is a story of one such journey, a spontaneous weekend trip with
my family to the lovely town of Stillwater, just about a three-hour drive from
our little town of Spicer. We packed an overnight bag, hopped in our
ever-reliable minivan, and simply let the open road guide us.

Matrix:

SETTING OFF – EXODUS FROM EVERYDAY

I still remember the excited chatter of the kids echoing through the house as we
packed our things. As a mom, there’s something incredibly gratifying about
seeing the simple, unadulterated joy of a new journey reflected in your little
ones’ eyes.

Crossing the expanse of the countryside, driving through Monticello and St.
Paul, we admired the unique harmony of nature and architecture that Minnesota
proudly claims. Our family counted different birds, played “I Spy,” and offered
up silent prayers for the less fortunate we encountered on the way.

Matrix:

OUR HAVEN IN STILLWATER

Stillwater exudes an inviting charm that’s difficult to ignore. Nestled by the
St.Croix River, this cozy town seemed to wrap us in a warm embrace as we
arrived. We checked into the historic Water Street Inn, its beautiful Victorian
architecture standing tall against the backdrop of the ever-changing sky.

Our first stop was Teddy Bear Park. The kids jumped, climbed, and laughed to
their hearts’ content, instilling this outdoor space with an energetic, youthful
spirit. As I watched them, I reflected anew on the bountiful blessings of
family.

Matrix:

LIFE, LOVE, AND LOFTS AT STILLWATER

After spending the day exploring, we found a quiet, serene diner – The Coffee
Cottage, where we shared laughs over mugs of hot cocoa and stories of our day,
bubbling with life’s simplest and most profound pleasures. The diner’s
tight-knit community was evident, reinforcing my belief in the strong ties that
bind us all together.

A visit to the Stillwater Historic Courthouse, followed by a tour of the Lofts
of Stillwater, made us recall the stories of the past and how each generation
adds to the towering edifice of human existence. We had our evening prayers
there, thanking God for the amalgamation of time, place, and humanity.

Matrix:

TIMELESS SUNSET AND TREASURE OF FAITH

One cannot truly appreciate Stillwater without witnessing a sunset by the St.
Croix River. The setting sun cast a golden hue on everything around us as we
walked hand-in-hand along the river’s edge. In that magical moment, I was
reminded anew of God’s grandeur echoing in every corner of our lives.

Matrix:

HOMECOMING – JOURNEY BEYOND MILES

As we packed our thoughts and experiences, preparing to return to Spicer, the
entire journey seemed a metaphor to me: a life buoyed by faith, grounded in
family, interlinked in the community. Stillwater was more than a town; it truly
was a journey through the soul of Minnesota.

We returned home, our hearts heavy with the weight of goodbyes and the lightness
of beautiful memories intertwined. The kids fell asleep on the drive home, their
innocent faces echoing the quiet serenity of a journey well spent.

Matrix:

REFLECTIONS ON OUR JOURNEY

Looking back, that weekend trip to Stillwater was so much more than a change of
scenery. It was a journey within, an exploration of faith, family ties, and the
extraordinary power of communities. There might be homes larger than our cozy
abode in Spicer, skies wider than our Minnesota horizon, but my heart reminded
me that existence is shaped not by the material around us, but by the strength
of love, faith, and solidarity within us.

Minnesota came alive within the tight-knit community of Stillwater, resonating
in the family love we shared, and echoed in the prayers we offered together on
this journey. So, here’s to the roads less travelled, to the towns we have yet
to explore, to the faith that binds us, to family’s comfort, and to Minnesota,
our shared home.

After all, home is not just a place; it is wherever the heart finds solace,
faith finds expression, community finds unity, and family finds love. Today,
that home was Stillwater. Tomorrow, who knows? But one thing is for sure – we,
as a family, will keep faith as our compass, love as our fuel, and community as
our destination.

EXPLORING MINNESOTA’S HEARTLANDS: A JOURNEY OF FAMILY, FAITH, AND FELLOWSHIP

By Raymond Baker

On November 12, 2023

Last weekend, we tuned into the beckoning blues of the horizon, packed our bags,
and embarked on a road trip that would hold charming memories for years to come!
To say we were excited would be an understatement. Minnesota, our home, always
held a certain magic that increased tenfold in the kaleidoscope of the fall.

From our quiet, small town of Spicer, our first stop was the vibrant city of
Saint Cloud, just about 45 miles east. Despite the relatively short drive, the
changing scenery painted a timeline of our state’s heritage. Farms replacing
modern buildings, snow-kissed fields undulating into the horizon, and the red,
orange, and yellow confetti from trees flying across the roads.

Arriving at the Munsinger Gardens, it was as if the pages of a fairy-tale book
sprung to life. We walked along picturesque trails showcasing Minnesota’s native
flora dotted with quaint bridges over the Mississippi River, reflecting colorful
autumnal magic. But it wasn’t just the visual beauty that left us enamored – it
was the rich sense of community. Local families were picnicking amidst the
foliage, sharing warm smiles, welcoming us into their shared public space. It
reminded me of our Bible study group in Spicer, where everyone came together,
not just as friends, but as a family. “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” and that’s
exactly what a community, bounded by faith and love, does.

Grateful for the beautiful day, we loaded up our picnic leftovers and took off
towards our next destination: Minnesota’s crown jewel, the City of Duluth.
Though an overnight journey, the open road and the midnight sky embroidered with
constellations made for an unforgettable journey, full of laughter, good music,
and enlightening conversations. We often forget how faith isn’t just found in
churches or divine texts; it’s in the unity and love we share as a family.

Duluth, with her grand Lake Superior, stood highlighted amongst the greenery, a
tangible postcard of God’s artistry. As we reveled in the sight of the sun
rising over the lake, my heart was filled with gratitude for the opportunity to
witness such splendor with the ones I love most.

Throughout the day, Duluth greeted us with open arms. From exploring the Great
Lakes Aquarium, visiting the Duluth Children’s Museum to indulging in delicious
artisan baked goods at Positively 3rd Street Bakery, every corner was steeped in
the warmth of community.

As we sat around the campfire that evening, roasting marshmallows and sharing
folk stories, I realized how such trips are not merely about discovery, but
about growing together. Exploring the beauty of nature, the vastness of space,
and the rich community tapestry, I could see my family truly appreciating God’s
blessings.

Bidding goodbye to Duluth, our road trip led us back home. The journey, about
185 miles, offered us one last serenade with Minnesota’s scenic mosaic from the
big city’s bustle to the stillness of rural landscapes.

Returning home to Spicer, our hearts swelled with appreciation for Minnesota,
our community, and the family we have become throughout this journey.
Spirituality became palpable in moments of quiet reflection, shared joy, and the
profound sense of being part of something greater.

This journey was indeed a testament to the strength and beauty of family, faith,
and community. It was about understanding that while we might live in different
zip codes, have different stories, or worship in different ways, we are all
share a connected existence – a community tied by the shared values of love,
respect, and faith. And it’s journeys like these that end up carving a deeper
imprint on our souls, reminding us how these elements scatter magic into our
otherwise ordinary lives.

At the end of the day, it was a gentle reminder of the blessing that Minnesota
is – a home shaped by faith, filled with family love and thriving on community
spirit. Here’s to more such journeys that offer lessons and laughter, bringing
us closer to each other, to the community, and to the Higher Power we believe
in. After all, isn’t that what life is all about?

AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY OF FAITH AND FAMILY IN MINNESOTA’S HIDDEN CORNERS

By Raymond Baker

Last weekend, my clan and I embarked on a delightful expedition that perfectly
encapsulated the essence of family, faith, and community. This heartwarming trip
reaffirmed my faith in unity and togetherness, and I am more than thrilled to
share our captivating traverse through Minnesota’s hidden corners.

Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, our journey led us to the quaint
city of Winona, bordered by the sparkling Mississippi River. Our first stop, the
iconic Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. A towering testament to the undying
faith of the local community, the Basilica is a sight to behold. Intricately
painted frescoes and stained-glass windows illuminated by dappled sunlight lent
an ethereal atmosphere, bearing testament to its enduring presence since 1895.
As we sat in silence soaked in this sanctuary of serenity, I could not help but
feel our family bonds deepening; a moment I shall cherish for a long, long
while.

From Winona, our journey led us north to Red Wing, a two-hour drive away.
Renowned for its artisan shoe makers, Red Wing Shoes, this charming town was not
only a needed pit-stop but also an insightful detour. Here, we discovered the
profound pride of a community built around a multi-generational legacy of shoe
craftsmanship. Hearing the townsfolk’s tales of resilience and camaraderie was
not only humbling but reminded us of the strength found in unity – a lesson we
familiarise with ourselves with on a daily basis.

Next up, we ventured to the idyllic city of Stillwater. Enveloped in a time
capsule, its well-preserved antiques and historic sites were a hit with the
kids. The cherry on top? A shimmering sunset expedition with Stillwater River
Boats. Surely, there is nothing that fosters family bonding more than sailing
under a candy-floss sky, laughing together amidst the soft lapping of the waves.
The resulting feeling of connection and love was almost palpable, and it was one
of those instants when you truly understand the meaning of being a family.

Finally, it was the sacred space of Taylor’s Falls that was the highlight of our
journey. The serene St. Croix River Valley, a mere hour’s drive from Stillwater
is home to the oldest operating church in Minnesota – the Church of St. Joseph.
Nestled amidst the Makarios campgrounds, this small chapel allowed us time to
reflect, renew our faith, and feel spiritually rejuvenated. We ended our day
around a crackling campfire, ensconced in nature’s lap. It was truly a surreal
experience; to be surrounded by pristine wilderness, warmed by the shared
stories and roasted marshmallows under a billion twinkling stars.

Reflecting on our journey, it’s clear that the tapestry of our experience was
interwoven with meaningful connections to places, stories, faith, and people.
From finding solace in the sanctity of the Basilica, humbling exposure to Red
Wing’s shoemakers, an unforgettable sunset in Stillwater, to the tranquil
retreat at Taylor’s Falls, every moment was a testament to the remarkable
strength found in familial bonds, the peace carried in faith, and the power of
the Minnesotan community spirit.

This unforgettable journey not only gave us new stories to share but also
memories to cherish, friendships to foster, and most importantly, lessons to
instill. It provided the perfect tableau to teach my family about the value of
faith, the power of unity, and the strength of a community, things that are
often lost in the routine of daily life.

As we drove back to Spicer, the kids chittered about our adventures. Their eyes
gleamed with a newfound appreciation for our home state that filled my heart
with warmth. Many miles navigated, many lessons learned, and many smiles shared,
our journey perfectly encapsulated what it meant to be a family, reinstating our
faith in one another and our respect for the community around us. Undoubtedly,
this journey was much more than an adventurous getaway; it was a pilgrimage that
made us realize how wonderfully precious and enriching Minnesota really is.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HUMBLE HEARTLANDS: FAITH, FAMILY AND THE FROZEN TUNDRA

By Raymond Baker

Grand visions are often born from small beginnings. As the morning sun crested
over the treasured Glacial Ridge Trail Scenic Byway, our family packed into our
camper with hearts brimming with anticipation. A long weekend lay ahead, a
journey planned through the proud heartland of Minnesota. Little did we know,
this journey would touch not only our souls, but also strengthen our bonds as a
family and deepen our understanding of the essence of community and faith.

THE GREAT ADVENTURE BEGINS

Our first day took us through the serene tranquility of Pope County, winding
past majestic elms and the undulating landscapes. As is tradition, we stopped
for a picnic lunch at Glacial Lakes State Park. The children raced excitedly
through the fluffy snow, their rosy cheeks gleaming in the winter sun. The
laughter and joy echoed around us, a simple yet powerful moment of family
bonding that filled our hearts with warmth against the chilly Minnesota air.

We then kicked off our boots at the bustling Country Inn & Suites in Alexandria,
a place that always feels almost as cozy and welcoming as our home in Spicer. As
we drifted off to sleep, nestled under layers of quilts, we made a silent prayer
of thanks. Not just for the shelter, but for the safety and love that we felt,
curled together as a family.

A MEET THAT MELTED HEARTS

The next day led us to the quaint community of Sauk Centre, home to the
historical Main Street Theatre, a palace of reveries that evokes a sense of an
era gone by. More importantly, it was here that we were to meet with a community
group for an evening of shared stories and faith. As both a mother and writer, I
was eager to introduce my children to the beautiful poignancy of letting
humanity shine through our interactions.

The community was much more diverse than we expected. People were from different
faiths, backgrounds, women, men, young and old, locals and even fellow
travelers. Yet, what was inspiring was that they all shared the universal
language of friendship & community spirit. Here was a reminder that our faith
doesn’t divide us, rather it brings us together, it roots us in love.

A SERMON IN SOLITUDE

The third day dawned bright and silent in quiet Todd County, where we camped for
the night. Not far from us stood the rustic and beloved Christ The King Church
in Browerville, a beacon of faith amidst the whispering pines. The white
building against a backdrop of the silent snow lent an air of tranquility that
seemed to soak into our bones.

As I sat alone inside the church, while my children played in the snow outside,
a profound sense of solitude washed over me. It was a reminder how often, amidst
the hustle and bustle of motherhood, I forget to pause and focus on my spiritual
self. That day, I found a sermon in the solitude of the church. It occurred to
me, it’s in these quiet moments of introspection that faith is strengthened
most.

THE JOURNEY HOME

Our journey came to an end in Belgrade, known for its Main Street Diner, where
we put our tired feet up and indulged in delicious pancakes and hot cocoa. It
was here, over laughter and shared stories of our weekend, that I realized
something profound. Our journey had not just been about the physical distance we
had covered. It was about the emotional and spiritual distance we had spanned
together as a family, and how much closer we were to each other and our faith.

A REFLECTION

We journeyed back to Spicer with hearts full of gratitude. We had covered
sprawling landscapes, pigmented beautifully by the hand of the Divine and had
fostered bonds that threaded through our family and extended outward into the
community.

These journeys and experiences are what bind us as a family, what feed our faith
and belief, and what grounds us in the essence of community. And while I reveled
in the beauty of the white Minnesotan landscapes, I realized, it’s not about the
destination or the journey; it’s about who we choose to walk through life with
and how we allow our faith to guide us.

It’s about the humble heartlands inside each of us, waiting to be explored and
cherished. After all, grand visions are often born from small beginnings.

THE UNSEEN THREADS OF BELONGING IN MINNESOTA – A REDISCOVERY OF FAITH, FAMILY,
AND COMMUNITY

By Raymond Baker

In Main

We moved to Minnesota when I was a child, beckoned by the state’s enchanting
beauty and the promise of a tight-knit community. My heart has dwelled here ever
since, amidst the winters that stretch our patience and the golden summers that
make amends. Through the years, my family’s bond with Minnesota, particularly
Spicer, has deepened, equally nurtured by the harsh, relentless winters and the
breathtaking, soulful summers.

UNVEILING THE SOUL OF SPICER

Spicer is a small city nestled in the heart of Minnesota, its serenity only
disrupted by the joyous shouts of children racing on their bikes and the
occasional barks of dogs playing fetch. Its community spirit is as vast as the
limitless skies arching above us. Small businesses operate on every corner, from
Ma’s Cafe serving bubbling chili and hot chocolate on cold days to Pat’s Corner
Store, where you can find everything from school supplies to a friendly chat
with Pat himself. These are not just businesses; they’re lifeblood to our
community.

It was in one of those businesses, Blessed Bakes, an aged yet warm bakery
founded by the Durkins, a family with Irish heritage, where my family found a
renewing sense of community. Blessed Bakes is known for their “Sunday Special,”
an assortment of home-made pastries prepared for post-church indulgence.

Amongst the regular church goers, we found a faith that wasn’t merely preached
but lived. Sharing pastries and coffee, often exchanging anecdotes of shared
struggles, triumphs, and beliefs, I discovered a community that tenaciously
upholds the essence of faith, family, and community. It is here our faith took
root, drawing sustenance from our shared experiences and reciprocated empathy.

AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY TO DULUTH

Last month, we decided to escape Spicer’s familiar horizons by venturing towards
Minnesota’s enchanting northeastern city, Duluth, nestled against Lake
Superior’s westernmost tip. Although the distance was considerable, the promise
of a weekend packed with adventure and bonding persuaded us. This was not just a
day trip—it needed time, deliberation, and ceaseless enthusiasm from the kids,
which was generously supplied.

We spent the hour-long journey from Spicer to Duluth crammed into our minivan,
my eldest taking charge of music, my youngest providing unsolicited commentary
on the passing landscapes. When we rolled into Duluth, the skyline, dominated by
old brick buildings, hilltop houses, and the glimmering lake, took our breaths
away. Duluth emanated a certain nostalgia, a blend of history, community, and a
love for the outdoors.

LESSONS FROM THE LAKE

Our time in Duluth was spent exploring the Lakewalk, marveling at the Aerial
Lift Bridge, and visiting The Duluth Depot – Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
However, it was our Sunday service at Lakeview Christian Church that became the
highlight of this weekend adventure. It reaffirmed what we’ve known all
along—faith transcends borders, brings together families over shared values, and
underlines the unifying spirit of a community.

We returned to Spicer, our souls enriched not only by Duluth’s stunning
landscape and vibrant history but also by the warmth of a community that
welcomed us into their midst, shared their stories, and made us part of a
collective Sunday prayer.

WEAVING THE THREADS OF BELONGING

Every journey we undertake, close or far, serves as a reminder – a link to our
identity grounded in Spicer, our faith, and the community that we are parts of,
both in our homely city and, as we discovered, beyond. We have learned so often
that even though communities function differently, the core remains the same:
togetherness, understanding, and a mutual respect that binds us together, tying
us in an unseen thread of belonging.

Our weekend adventure to Duluth, though unraveling new threads, only reinforced
the bond to our own community. It put in perspective how Minnesota, in its
essence, embodies the unity of faith, family, and community. Indeed, Spicer is
no different, our community resonates the same values. And across cities, as we
experienced in Duluth, these core themes run deep. They are the strings that
keep us connected in an enormous web of love and reciprocal faith.

As a mother, these experiences offer precious life lessons. We bring our family
closer through shared experiences, the faith we hold dear, and the community
that we are a part of. Thus, we not only find our roots but also realize the
depth of our belonging. In this grand orchestration of life, family, faith, and
community, we’ve found our harmony, our belonging. And I hope you find your
unique tune too.

DISCOVERING THE HEART OF COMMUNITY AND FAITH IN HARMONY, MINNESOTA

Minnesota is justly famous for its glistening lakes, breath-taking landscapes,
and bustling cities. But, nestled among these attractions, are quaint, serene
towns India, teeming with warmth and neighborliness. As my family and I packed
up our faithful Ford Explorer with essential camping gear, we embarked on a
much-awaited weekend getaway from our home here in Spicer, to a lesser-explored
gem called Harmony.

Harmony, a welcoming tapestry of charming neighborhoods and agrestic elegance,
is tucked away in Fillmore County, a drive of about three hours. Known as “the
biggest little town in Southern Minnesota,” Harmony offered a unique backdrop to
explore the intertwining realms of faith, family, and community bonding.

VENTURING INTO HARMONY: A TAPESTRY OF COMMUNITY AND GRACIOUS HOSPITALITY

We chose to camp at ‘Hidden Valley Campgrounds,’ set amidst Harmony’s verdant
rolling hills. Even before erecting our tents, we were greeted with friendly
nods and inviting smiles by fellow campers. The unpretentious aura of small-town
camaraderie was evident from the get-go.

The Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail, a panoramic marvel we stumbled upon
during our early morning explorations, encapsulated the essence of family
bonding. As we hiked its quieter corners, we relished the gifts of nature and
had fun-filled games of hide-and-seek. The simple yet profound joy of ‘being
together’ was palpable.

Yet, it was not just Harmony’s natural landscapes that etched a potent imprint
on our hearts. Engaging with the benevolent residents of Harmony, we unearthed
heartening sentiments of unity and connectedness. A trip to the ‘JEM Theater,’
the heartbeat of Harmonian social life, was a delightful experience in town
entertainment. The local volunteers who run this establishment bear testimony to
the spirit of cooperation prevalent in this community. Watching an old-school
Western with the local crowds stirred emotions of nostalgia and a deep-connected
warmth.

INTERWEAVING THREADS OF FAITH: THE ESSENCE OF HARMONY

Faith is woven into the fabric of life in Harmony. A visit to the ‘Greenfield
Lutheran Church’ gave us a glimpse into the community’s strong spiritual
underpinnings. We felt the deep reverence seeped in every crevice of this
stalwart structure that stood tall amidst the community landscape.

The sermon, delivered in a calm yet stirring dialect of the local pastor,
touched on the importance of community and familial bonds in our lives. It
echoed what I’ve always believed – our families are truly the compass that
guides us, our safe haven in tumultuous times.

As my children spent the afternoon sketching the church in their notebooks as a
token of memory, I found myself reflecting on faith’s role in galvanizing the
community. It was that familiar feeling of faith that empowered me to foster a
nurturing environment for my family.

AS ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END

As we bid goodbye to Harmony, I carried back a heart full of cherished memories,
a mind deep in thoughts about community and faith, and a feeling of serene
tranquility. This humble town reminded us of the essentials, often overlooked in
frantic city life – the joy in simplicity, the value of community, and the
importance of faith.

Minnesota, in many ways, is a reflection of these values. Every city, every
small town, every lake, embodies the essence of family, community, and faith.
So, as we journey from one part of this state to another, we are consistently
exploring, learning, and evolving – together as families, fortified by faith,
connected as a community.

In essence, our trip to Harmony was more than a weekend getaway. It was an
enlightening experience that breathed new perspectives into our view of family,
faith, and community. It was about reclaiming the beauty in shared smiles,
collective faith, and familial bonds – the lifeblood of wonderful Minnesota!
Well, until our next adventure, let’s keep exploring, keep discovering, and most
importantly, keep believing. Faith, after all, can move mountains – or might I
say, navigate Minnesotan roads!
