Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang

MASJID PETEMPATAN MELAYU SEMBAWANG

INTRODUCTION

Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang, also known as Sembawang Malay Village
Mosque, is a significant religious and cultural landmark in Singapore's
Sembawang district. The mosque, with a rich history dating back to the 1960s,
serves as a vital hub for the local Muslim community, providing spiritual and
communal support.

HISTORY

In the early 1960s, the Singapore government initiated a public housing program,
leading to the development of the Sembawang New Town. As the area flourished,
the necessity for a mosque to accommodate the growing Muslim population became
evident. In 1964, a mosque building committee was formed by local Muslim leaders
and residents to raise funds and supervise the construction process.

The mosque was formally inaugurated on February 26, 1967, under the name Masjid
Petempatan Melayu Sembawang, symbolizing its significance as a spiritual nucleus
for the local Malay community. Throughout the years, the mosque has undergone
various renovations and expansions, including a significant upgrading project in
2001 aimed at enhancing its facilities and services.
