KING BBQ IN NORTH CHARLESTON SHINES WITH A MODERN STYLE UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN THE
COUNTRY

King BBQ in North Charleston stands out with a modern style of Chinese- and
North Carolina-influenced barbecue unlike any other in the country.

YEAR IN RESTAURANT REVIEWS: A CRITIC’S TAKE ON CHARLESTON RESTAURANTS IN 2023
AND BEYOND

The radius of good dining in Charleston expanded to West Ashley, North
Charleston and the far reaches of Mount Pleasant in 2023.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: BEAUTIFUL SOUTH DELIVERS AN ENERGETIC PRESENTATION OF CHINESE
FARE

Beautiful South is the second Charleston venture from David Schuttenberg and
Tina Heath-Schuttenberg, the owners of Kwei Fei. Both restaurants draw
inspiration from the cuisine of China. That’s pretty much where the similarities
end.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: LOLA ROSE DELIVERS HIGH-QUALITY COASTAL MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE

From the owners of The Grocery comes Lola Rose, located in north Mount Pleasant
in a shiny new storefront in the Bend at the Carolina Park, just across the road
from a Costco.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: SOUTHBOUND SETS THE BAR HIGH. THE FOOD DOESN’T CONSISTENTLY
CLEAR IT.

Southbound in downtown Charleston makes a dramatic first impression. The
intrigue builds as you head around the corner into the small first-floor dining
room or up the stairs to one of the tall, white marble-topped tables.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: KULTURA PRESENTS A PARADE OF COLORS AND VIBRANT FILIPINO
FLAVORS

Much of the menu at Kultura in downtown Charleston puts creative twists on
traditional Filipino preparations.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: WITH PRIME RIB AND PARKER HOUSE ROLLS, THE JAMES IS A
THROWBACK

The James opened in July in the former Zia Taqueria space on Maybank Highway.
It’s the latest venture from Charleston’s Neighborhood Dining Group, the firm
behind Husk, Minero and Delaney Oyster House.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: SIDES STAR AT HANNIBAL’S KITCHEN, WHERE CRAB RICE REMAINS A
FIXTURE

Hannibal’s Kitchen opened in 1985, when Robert “Hannibal” Huger bought and
renamed the former Martha’s Restaurant, which itself dated back to the early
1960s. Huger passed away in 2005, and the restaurant is owned today by his son
L. J. Huger and managed by L.J.’s two daughters, Safiya Grant and Felicity
Huger.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: 20 YEARS IN, FIG REMAINS AS IMPRESSIVE AND RELEVANT AS EVER

FIG celebrated its 20th anniversary in April, a milestone few fine dining
restaurants reach. For most of those two decades, it’s been on almost every list
of Charleston’s must-visit restaurants.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: PINK BELLIES’ DARING, UNEXPECTED TWISTS DELIGHT WHEN THEY
LAND

Pink Bellies eased into the King Street scene in Charleston thanks to the
pandemic, opening for takeout only in March 2021 and for in-person dining six
months later. Now two years in, the restaurant still does a brisk takeout
business and has rather limited hours — dinner from 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday
through Sunday.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: EL MOLINO IS A PROMISING PLACE FOR SATISFYING TACOS, TORTAS
AND MORE

At two locations in Charleston, El Molino Supermarket serves savory tacos on
soft corn tortillas, hefty tight-wrapped burritos, tortas on warm fluffy rolls
and more.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: DOES NEW CHARLESTON HOT SPOT SORELLE LIVE UP TO ITS HIGH
EXPECTATIONS?

Sorelle shines best not with the big, brash plates nor with the produce of the
Lowcountry but rather with expensive ingredients sourced from far away, The Post
and Courier’s contributing restaurant critic writes.

REVISITING A WEST ASHLEY STAPLE

 * Jan 23, 2024

I’m sure many Charleston’s Menu subscribers — especially longtime Lowcountry
residents — have heard of The Glass Onion in West Ashley. You know, the place
with a daily changing list of Southern favorites, like gumbo and po’boys.

RESTAURANT SERVICE FEES

 * Jan 16, 2024

In the nation’s capital, the restaurant check is starting to resemble a CVS
receipt, with credit card processing fees and various service charges added on
top of the tip.

What is behind these additional fees? And, could more be coming to Charleston
soon?

MAKING MOFONGO

 * Jan 9, 2024

I discovered Lucy’s Deliveries y Mas by searching Google for restaurants on Red
Bank Road, but those who live near this Goose Creek Mexican and Latin eatery may
have stumbled on it while searching through nearby options on Uber Eats.

CHAIN REACTION

 * Jan 2, 2024

When I look at downtown Charleston, I don’t see that many national chains in the
highly trafficked areas of the peninsula. While the return of diners to these
nationally-known chain restaurants with hundreds or thousands of locations is
big news, it’s the mid-sized franchises and hospitality groups that are truly
changing the Holy City’s dining scene.

WRAPPING UP DRY JANUARY IN CHARLESTON WITH THE COCKTAIL BANDITS’ MOCKTAIL CRAWL

 * Jan 26, 2024

This mocktail crawl certainly proved that detail-oriented elevated beverages can
be made for all — alcohol drinkers or not. And you don’t have to drink alcohol
at some of Charleston’s loveliest bars while still enjoying the ambiance. Maybe
that’s something you’ll carry with you past Dry January.

FOR DRY JANUARY, SÈCHEY IS THE CHARLESTON BOTTLE SHOP FOR YOU, NOW ALSO IN

 * Jan 12, 2024

I’m all for a good mocktail, and one supplier in town of elevated nonalcoholic
spirits is behind quite a few of them, both in Charleston living rooms and bars
and beyond.

FOR MARTINIS AND CAVIAR IN CHARLESTON, COME GET COZY AT THE DEN

 * Dec 29, 2023

I’m not typically one to opt for caviar from the menu, notably because of the
price tag. But Frannie & The Fox’s new smaller and more intimate back bar, The
Den, has an affordable option for those looking to taste a portion of caviar
service.
