The ‘80s were a crazy time, but the decade brought us some quality TV shows
including Charles in Charge. We fell in love with the sitcom that ran for five
seasons from 1984-1990.

But while the show is incredibly wholesome, things behind-the-scenes were a lot
darker. Many decades after the show ended, a dirty little secret came to light
involving its star, Scott Baio, that threatened to destroy Charles in Charge.
Let’s take a look at what went on when the cameras weren’t rolling and the
scandal that shocked fans.

A ROUGH START

Even almost four decades after its premiere, people are still talking about
Charles in Charge. But did you know that the show was canceled after just one
season? The first season premiered in October 1984, but due to poor ratings, it
was put on a hiatus in February 1985, with two episodes still left in the first
season.

The episodes aired a few weeks later, before the show was dropped from the
network. One year later, the show was reworked and relaunched and the new series
premiered in January 1987. In total, there are 126 episodes with five seasons
and it turned many of its stars into household names!

FROM “HAPPY DAYS” TO “CHARLES IN CHARGE”

The show’s leading man, Scott Baio, was already a star before playing the show’s
titular character, Charles. He became a household name after appearing as Chachi
Arcola in a show you may have heard of—Happy Days. And Baio jumped at the
opportunity to star in a new sitcom.

But many fans have speculated that Scott Baio was reprising the role of Charles
Arcola aka “Chachi” from Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi because Charles’
last name is never revealed in Charles in Charge. It still remains a mystery!
And that’s not all— the same actress, Ellen Travolta played his mother on all
three series!

WHO'S CHARLES?

Charles in Charge centers around Charles, played by Scott Baio, a college
student at Copeland College in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Charles applies for a
job as a housekeeper working for the wealthy Pembroke family after needing a
place to stay. He gets the job and instead of a salary, he receives room and
board for taking care of their three children.

While all this is going on, Charles is having fun with his best friend Buddy
(Willie Aames) and his girlfriend Jennifer Runyon (Gwendolyn Pierce). But Season
2 had some major changes in the cast and storyline.

A NEW SEASON, A NEW FAMILY

Due to poor ratings, the show was canceled after the first season, and only a
few original cast members returned. Producers completely reworked the story and
when Scott Baio’s Charles returned from his summer vacation, a new unfamiliar
family was introduced—the Powells.

The Pembrokes moved to Seattle and the Powells agreed to sublet the house with
Charles remaining as the live-in babysitter. How convenient! And somehow, the
new family also had three kids. While Baio was one of the few actors to remain
on the show, he wasn’t the first choice for Charles.

A DIFFERENT CHARLES

Can you imagine anyone other than Scott Baio playing Charles? Well, there could
have been a very different Charles as the role was written for another very
famous ‘80s actor—Michael J. Fox. But Fox ended up declining the offer.

He was busy playing Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties which ran from 1982-1989,
overlapping with Charles in Charge. Family Ties was a huge hit, running for
seven seasons and it won many awards including three consecutive Emmys for
Michael J. Fox for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. So, we’re not sure
how he could have played both roles at the same time.

BUDDY MAKES THE CUT

Scott Baio and Willie Aames were the only actors to appear in all 126 episodes
of the series and they were among the few brought back for Season 2 after the
show was canceled.

Like Baio, Charles in Charge wasn’t Aames’ first acting gig. Aames started
acting as a child and he appeared in shows including The Odd Couple, The
Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, Eight is Enough,
The Waltons, and The Love Boat. But it wasn’t until after starring in the sitcom
that Aames’ life took a dark turn.
