Is it possible to boot from this drive and if so how? Alternatively, since I've read it might be difficult to do this with XP, is it possible to update it to Windows 10 without affecting any of the data? Would there be driver issues if I tried putting it as the main hard drive of another computer? * Back to top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #4 JOHNC_21 JohnC_21 * * Members * 32,028 posts * ONLINE * Gender:Male * Local time:09:58 AM Posted Yesterday, 12:51 PM You cannot boot a drive with XP that was removed and attached to a USB adapter. On top of that you can't boot XP on a modern computer as it does not have the appropriate drivers and you cannot update to Windows 10 without losing data. Your only chance of running XP on the new computer, if it has enough RAM and power, would be to create a disk image from the XP drive and use that in a Virtual Machine. This can be done with Macrium although I have never done this. There is a learning curve on using a VM like Virtual Box. https://blog.macrium.com/techie-tuesday-converting-a-physical-machine-to-virtual-machine-81cfe5e0f9b7# * Back to top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #5 CHRIS COSGROVE Chris Cosgrove * * Global Moderator * 20,396 posts * OFFLINE * Gender:Male * Location:Scotland * Local time:02:58 PM Posted Yesterday, 04:54 PM If your concern is to get data off this old drive then you can use your IDE to USB adapter for this. Just connect the drive to the computer and file explorer should see it as just another external storage drive and all the normal tools for moving data around should work.
