friends, to help them through the process. Running the helpline was among my
main responsibilities during my first couple of years with the organization. It

arrived at around 3 a. They would come in asking about illegal alcohol or saying
there was a noise complaint. My friend and I decided to head home.

But the police made us go in the opposite direction instead, and corralled us up
onto Beaver Hall Hill. We knew then that the raid was premeditated. Stephens
returns to Montreal for the anniversary: 'We shouldn't let our guard down'

separated from my friend. But then I thought, why am I running? One of them
punched me in the chest and slammed me down. I got knocked down three times that
night. The second time, a cop hooked his billy club in the small of my back and
catapulted me through the air.

Everything was happening so quickly and it was so violent that my mind switched
off. He was my saviour. I tried to stop at a window to see my reflection. It was
surreal. We escaped by heading down to Place des Arts, which was blocked off for
a festival—Just for Laughs, I think.

It was complete insanity. Eventually we split up. One of the girls who was at
Sex Garage was dating my ex-boyfriend, of all people. We went back to their
place and he cleaned my face. He was freaking out. It was democratic. There are
queer homeless people, queer sex workers, trans sex workers. There are all kinds
of people dealing with serious issues that need to be addressed. The marriage
discussion was an example of that. But there should be no illusions that this
will liberate people.

What happens on the ground is quite different. Legal recognition does not mean
liberation, even if it can shift the public consciousness. I found society very
unjust then. That indifference is progress and acceptance, rather than simply
tolerance. Michael Welsh left with his friend Tim in the summer of Tim died of
AIDS a few months later at the age of Michael Welsh.

I moved to Vancouver from northern Alberta in , when I was By , I was working as
a nurse at St. AIDS Vancouver was formed two years later to disseminate
information about this illness that was already such a serious concern in New
York and San Francisco. I attended a public forum and decided to volunteer: I
became the first coordinator of support services.

The organization was talking to gay men about safe sex and using condoms,
something I adopted immediately. Being aware of the possibility of transmission
and its impact made me cautious. But I also think there was an aspect of luck.
Taking an HIV test always came with some concern for the result. It presented a
real challenge within a hospital environment: how do we deal with the infection?
How can we deliver sensitive care to patients and not just shove them into
unnecessary isolation?

There are a few patients who stand out in my mind, even after all these years. I
remember one guy—he was so incredibly sick. His mother was profoundly faithful

Numerous pledges of renewed interest in the financial enlargement of the
Seminary were made by representatives of the States, and the Committee on Or.

The Committee on Preaching reported appointments for the Sabbath.

Several visiting brethren were introduced to the Convention, and briefly
addressed the body. The Committee on Order of Business reported an outline for
business through Monday morning, which was adopted. The Convention adjourned
with the benediction by E. Mullins, Kentucky. The Convention having assembled at
3 o'clock, was led in prayer by N. Broughton, North Carolina.

Consideration of the report of the Committee on the movement was resumed. It was
discussed by J. Gambrell, Texas; W. Hatcher, Virginia; T. Eaton, Kentucky; S.
Ford, Missouri; S. Jameson, Georgia; E. Kerfoot, Georgia; T. Bell, Georgia, and
the previous question having been ordered, on motion of J. White, North
Carolina, the report was adopted. The Convention adjourned with prayer by J. The
Convention was called to order at 8 P. M by Robert C. Buckner, Texas, one of the
Vice Presidents, and. Venable, Mississippi, led in prayer. Nash, Kentucky, read
the following report on the. Work of the Sunday School Board.

W e gratefully a c- knowledge the grace of God shown in the report of the Sunday
School Board, which should be read carefully and prayerfully by 'all our people.
The loss of Brethren A. Purinton and Samuel Boykin call for earnest prayers and
patient and faithful service to build successfully on the f o u n d a t ion
which they laid and to carry forward the work to even greater success.

We indorse the action of the Board in the choice of Brother I. Editorial
Secretary Sunday School Board.

Van Ness as Editorial Secretary, and pray for God's wisdom and grace to rest
richly upon him in his work. We trust the Board will, as soon as practicable,
secure the suitable Field Secretary, as proposed, who will work in hearty
co-operation with the organized State forces. We rejoice in the generous gifts
to the Board, and beg our brethren and sisters to prayerfully consider their
personal privilege and duty in the light of these noble examples.

The gifts of the Board to our denominational work are most gratifying, and will
doubtless be enlarged as 'the business of the Board increases. We gratefully
note the growth in public favor that the Board has won by the excellence of its
work. We regard the Board as an invaluable and increasingly useful missionary
agency.

We endorse the recommendations of the special Committee as follows: "1. As soon
as the Board sees its way clear we consider it important that a much larger and
more modern building be erected, where we can do our own printing and be of more
general service to our denomination.

It is deemed advisable to make the bond even larger, be cause of the increase in
the reserve fund. In the case of the Kind Words paper, we recommend the
enlargement which can readily be made in the hands of our new and efficient
Editorial Secretary. Nash, Kentucky; I. Trotter, Kentucky; and J. Frost,
Tennessee; and was then ordered to be laid on the table for further
consideration on Monday morning.

Papal Fields. The papal fields of the Foreign Mission Board cover a territory
more than one-half larger than the United States, inhabited by more than 55,,
persons.

The oldest of thesefields is Italy. The work was begun here about thirty years
ago. This has been in some respects the hardestfieldof the Convention, but
faithful work has been done, and good results have followed. A better day is
coming for Italy; but this work greatly needs strengthening. We are glad that
the Board is looking for another man for Italy. May the Lord guide it to the man
of his own choice! In Mexico a good year's work has been done. There has been
many hindrances, especially sickness in the families of the missionaries: but
the Lord has been present and the work has prospered.

Harmony and co-operation everywhere prevail. The re-opening of Madeira Institute
is especially gratifying, and it is greatly to be hoped that the Board will soon
see its way clear. It is beyond dispute that strong and abiding evangelization
must be accompanied by the promotion of education. This has been proved to be
true in our own country and on every missionfield,and Mexico can be no
exception. The work in Brazil has been glorious.

The gospel is spreading over many parts of the republic, baptisms are indeed a
cheering record. And the co-operation of the various missions, especially in
publication work, is particularly gratifying and is an augury of great cheer and
hope. Already Brazil is becoming one of our most fruitful fields.

One-third of all the baptisms of the Board are reported there. It is especially
appropriate that Baptists should seek to bring to the simplicity of the gospel
of Christ those whom Rome has so long blinded with her errors. We are the best
exponents of a gospel which Rome has perverted. This great distinction God has
given us not to make a ground of boasting, but to use for the greatest glory for
God.

The work in papalfields is hard and the results not rapid in appearing, but the
Lord has called us to it; and that call contains all the imperative of duty and

reports of the noble men and women on thefieldbreathe a confidence, a
hopefulness, a courage, that should inspire us to larger sacrifice and nobler
effort. If the report of the Foreign Mission Board a year ago furnis cause for
congratulation, as the committee then stated, the Board's report to this
Convention should be cause for profound thanksgiving to Almighty God that he has
honored the increased efforts of his children to give the gospel to the world.

A twenty-five per cent, increase in our offerings to foreign missions has been
rewarded by an increase of more thanfiftyper cent, in baptisms on foreignfields.
Your committee notes with satisfaction that while the Board has handled more
money during last year than in any former year in its history, the expenses have
been only per cent.. Your committee desires to commend to your favorable
considera-.

Every State constituting the Convention has a part in this blessed increase
except the District of Columbia and Indian Territory. They all have done well,
but none of them have done too well. When they have measured their efforts by
God's love to them, then indeed shall the kingdom of this world become the
kingdom of our Lord and his Christ.

The success of the past year should inspire renewed confidence in our ability to
attempt greater things for the Master, in the coming year.
