FEBRUARY 2024 RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

DATABASE CONTENTS

 * 172K new object links (pointers) were added from over 800 new references.
 * 67K sources from the literature were cross-identified with NED objects.
 * 21K new objects were added into the database.
 * 162K new redshift measurements were added, including data for 24K objects
   that previously had no redshift.
 * Current total holdings of the database are summarized here.

NED Facilitates GW Counterpart Searches

The NED gravitational wave follow-up (GWF) service is continuing to cross-match
galaxies with LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) GW events for the fourth observing run. The
upper panel in the figure above shows candidate host galaxies for neutron star -
black hole (NSBH) merger event LVK S230518H. Recent updates include utilizing a
subset of NED galaxies with additional vetting and characterization: the Local
Volume Sample (NED-LVS; Cook et al. 2023 ). Photometry from all-sky surveys
(GALEX, 2MASS, and AllWISE) are used to derive physical properties and to
estimate the completeness relative to expected local luminosity densities (e.g.,
bottom panel in Figure). See the NED-LVS webpage for more details.

The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is funded by the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration and operated by the
California Institute of Technology.
