WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE UKZN VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRINCIPAL, PROFESSOR NANA POKU

×

Firstly, let me express my heartfelt gratitude for entrusting us, the University
of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), with your academic journey.

Choosing UKZN is not just a decision for the present but a golden investment in
your future. This choice is poised to enhance your potential, enriching not only
your academic knowledge but also your career prospects.

Since its inception in 2004, following the merger of the then University of
Natal and the University of Durban-Westville, UKZN has produced a long list of
illustrious leaders and professionals who excel in their respective fields
today.

By opting for UKZN, you are aligning yourself with a world-renowned institution
which is consistently ranked amongst the top four universities in South Africa
and Africa at large. Our global stature, too, is notable, as we are consistently
ranked amongst the top 500 universities worldwide.

Research, which is a cornerstone of academic excellence, thrives here at UKZN.
Our four colleges – the College of Humanities, College of Law and Management
Studies, College of Agriculture, Engineering, and Science, and College of Health
Sciences – house 68 research centres and units.

Our prowess in research results from unwavering dedication from our vibrant
university community, determined to offer nothing less than world-class
facilities and talent.

Each of our five campuses – Howard College, Westville, Medical School, Edgewood,
and Pietermaritzburg – is a hub of innovation. From cutting-edge lecture halls
and computer labs to our expansive library, boasting over 1.4 million diverse
resources, we aim to provide an enriching academic experience.

On all our campuses, you will also find that we have a wide range of student
support services devoted to student wellbeing, mental health, and academic
success through the provision of individual and group psychological and
psycho-educational services that include personal counselling and psychotherapy,
career counselling and assessments, career-related services, support groups and
developmental life-skills. I will urge you to reach out to our dedicated staff,
who are here to support you throughout your academic journey.

Yet, UKZN is not just about academics. Here, we cherish the holistic development
of our students. Whether you’re an athlete, an aspiring leader, an art
enthusiast, or simply someone eager to discover new passions, our campus is a
treasure trove of opportunities. With top-notch gyms, cutting-edge sports
facilities, and thriving cultural communities, there’s a place for every talent
and interest here at UKZN.

Our vibrant campus life, teeming with political, religious, civic, and cultural
organisations, promises myriad opportunities for you to hone your activism and
leadership skills.

Beyond the confines of our institution, we are deeply rooted in community
welfare. With over 1200 community outreach initiatives, we’ve touched the lives
of more than half a million beneficiaries, instilling in our students the
essence of a servant citizenry.

In conclusion, your journey at UKZN promises to be one of academic brilliance,
holistic growth, and enduring values. We look forward to witnessing your unique
journey and the difference you will make in future.

With warmest regards,

Professor Nana Poku
