CLOSET ESSENTIALS: OUTERWEAR FOR WINTER

I love jackets and coats, and probably own more than my fair share. Since coats,
especially cold weather coats (which is what this post is about), are the first
thing people see in the winter months, it's important to find something you
love. I have searched the web and found a ton of great coats, all under $200.
Here are some of my personal favorites (the warm factor on some of these coats
vary - I know what I think of as cold weather is a lot different from what
people in Florida or Texas think of as cold weather), click on any photo below
for more information.

I love the wide lapel on this INC International Concepts coat ($149), and
although it can be hard to keep clean, winter white is always so pretty (also
available in black or navy).

I've been eyeing this adorable Afternoon Symphony Jacket from ModCloth ($99.99)
since it popped up on the website earlier today. I am trying not to pull the
trigger but it's SO cute I might not be able to resist.

Similar in style to the INC coat above, I love the bright purple color of this
Miss Sixty coat ($178), which is a bit different from my standard black winter
wear.

A more casual coat, the military details on this Dollhouse jacket ($89.99) are
fantastic.

I'm a sucker for faux fur (and olive green), so the collar on this Calvin Klein
coat ($149.50) caught my eye right away.

Another great ladylike coat, this time in black/white tweed ($74.90).

Everyone loves a classic wool trench, and the ruffles on this version from New
York & Co ($149.95) add a great feminine touch.

And last but not least, the oversize collar and basketweave texture on this
Style & Co. coat ($129) are perfection.

Here are some more great options...

CLOSET ESSENTIALS: JEWELRY

Many people mentioned in the giveaway post a few weeks ago that they'd like to
see more accessories. Again, I cannot always control what looks 4 less I find,
but I can certainly try and feature more accessories in other ways. So, today's
closet essentials post will revolve around jewelry.

Admittedly, I don't wear a lot of jewelry, as I'm sure you've noticed in my What
I'm Wearing posts. I wear the same bezel set diamond stud earrings (a gift from
my husband) almost every single day, and the other constants are my engagement
and wedding rings. However, I've been trying to branch out a bit lately and add
some more accessories to my drawer. Jewelry is great because you can spend a lot
or a little and items tend to be pretty versatile, going with everything from
casual to evening looks depending on the piece.

Here are some of the items that I have purchased (or have been given to me as
gifts by friends/family) over the years and have proven to be a versatile part
of my wardrobe.

NYLightMetals Clover Leaf Necklace
Similar to a much pricer Van Cleef & Arpels necklace, I wear this version from
the Etsy seller NYLightMetals often.

Suzanne Elizabeth Turquoise Teardrop Necklace
I bought this necklace after seeing it on Ali (The Bachelorette) and I wear it
constantly. I truly adore this necklace.

Michael Kors Jet Set watch
Yes this watch is huge, but I love it despite the fact that both my mom and
brother asked me if it was my husband's watch. I think it will be a classic for
many years. (Click HERE or HERE for less expensive alternatives)

Chan Luu wrap bracelet
Yes, these are pricey (honestly I got mine with credits from Gilt), but you can
find a ton of affordable alternatives online - click here for a great option.

Diamond Stud earrings
The setting on these are similar to the ones my husband had made for me by a
local jeweler, but before I had the real thing I just wore faux diamond studs.
The great thing is that they are inexpensive, you can get them in tons of
different sizes, and they are a classic item that looks fab with any outfit.
Click HERE for a very inexpensive alternative.

As I mentioned, I've been trying to branch out a bit lately and here are some
jewelry items I've been loving, all under $25 (click on any image for more
information). There are two pages on the widget, so be sure and scroll thru!

CLOSET ESSENTIALS: LOW HEELED/FLAT BOOTS

As I mentioned in my last Closet Essentials post, I tend to wear mostly flats or
low heeled boots on a daily basis and a reader asked if I could feature some
cute (age appropriate) low boots. Some of you have asked why I don't wear heels
often, and I've mentioned before that there are several reasons. Number one,
they just aren't practical for my everyday life. Number two, I'm pretty tall
(around 5' 9 1/2") without shoes, so adding 3-4 inches of height is fine for a
special occasion but I tend to feel a bit conspicuous running around in huge
heels for a trip to the grocery store.

I have three pairs of boots in my wardrobe, and I think all are perfect for
someone that is looking for a lower heeled or flat boot to add to their own
closet. (Click on any image in this post for more information unless otherwise
noted.)

As I'm sure you've noticed in some Style Me Saturday posts, I'm obsessed with
these Steve Madden Intyce low wedge boots. I have a similar pair that I bought a
couple of years ago from Bakers and I love them. You can also get a less
expensive (faux suede) option at Payless for $39.99 if the Steve Madden version
is a bit out of your budget.

Another pair of boots I have in my closet are some black riding boots that I
bought from DSW last fall. Here is a similar pair for $138.

The most recent addition to my closet was this pair of Katherine Engineer boots
from Target (click HERE to purchase). A dead ringer for the Frye Harness boots,
these are real leather for $49.99 and I absolutely adore them so far.

I did some searching and although I'm not currently in the market for any new
boots, here are some low heeled versions that caught my eye for under $150.

CLOSET ESSENTIALS: FAB FLATS

I haven't done one of these in a LONG time, but you can see the other
installments in this series HERE. After seeing in the giveaway post that several
people want to see more flats featured, I thought it would be appropriate to do
a Closet Essentials post on my #1 pick for daily footwear. As you may have
noticed from previous What I'm Wearing posts (I promise I will try and do more
of these again very soon)- I pretty much wear flats every day. I rarely wear
heels unless it's a special event or occasion, and I never wear them to work
(with the exception of the occasional low heeled boot). My job doesn't require
me to dress up, so why should my feet suffer? :)

As I've mentioned before on the blog, my favorite flats are my Tory Burch Revas
which I own in black, and recently purchased in a tan snakeskin. Yes, these
flats are pricey, but I subscribe to the "cost per wear" idea and I've
definitely gotten my money's worth (and more) with these flats. I recently wore
the black ones to photograph a wedding and after 8+ hours on my feet, I had no
blisters and no pain. As I said, I love these flats.

Flats by Tory Burch

I realize that the TB flats aren't in eveyone's budget, and I have plenty of
inexpensive flats in my closet as well, so here are some of my other picks (all
under $150):

I don't own any lace flats but when I saw these in a recent advertisement, I
fell in love. Click HERE for a less expensive option from Charlotte Russe (also
seen in the widget at the bottom of the post).

I have a pair of simliar leopard flats that I bought at Target three or four
years ago. I love them and these Old Navy flats are a great alternative.

Need some basic black flats? I love this simple pair from Gap, and the price is
right too. They come in a bunch of colors if you want to branch out a little.

If you like the snakeskin TB flats above but aren't convinced they're worth it
(or maybe they aren't in your budget at the moment), try this slightly less
expensive pair from Steve Madden.

I love these studded flats from Target after seeing them on Chloe, and they
remind me of a simple, flat version of the studded Valentino heels she just
bought.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but maybe I'm not the only one. I've
found that when photographing families in the chilly fall weather or just
running errands on the weekend, there's nothing better than a cozy pair of
moccasins. I have a similar pair to these Xhilaration mocs from Target that I've
been wearing to death lately. Throw on a sweater or a long sleeve tee and a cute
scarf along with some jeans and you've got yourself a cozy weekend ensemble.

Can't get enough flats? Check out some more of my picks in the widget below...

FOR MEN: CLOSET ESSENTIALS: TIES

I've had a few requests recently to feature more options for men, so I enlisted
the help of the fabulous Laura from LKc Style to do a couple guest posts! Thank
you to Laura, and be sure to visit LKc Style for all of your men's styling
needs.

Every man should have a few ties in his closet available to suit any occasion.
LKc Style recommends always having at least one bold colored tie, one striped
tie, and one patterned tie. Even better, if you have limited amount of shirts,
you can make sure each of the above ties coordinate for optimal mix-and-match
options. We wouldn’t want to miss out on all the options, now would we??
Consider the following for your tie arsenal (ALL $20 OR UNDER!!!):

Topman Navy Stripe Slim Tie - $20

Express Silk Paisley in Brilliance - $19.99 (on sale)

Topman Gray Oxford Cotton - $20

CLOSET ESSENTIALS: BLACK PUMPS

The next item that I think is a closet essential (at least they are for me!) are
black pumps. I have a pair of black patent pumps from Payless (featured here on
The Today Show) which are no longer available, and a pair of peep toe pumps by
Enzo Angiolini (shown below) which fulfill this essential part of my wardrobe.

I feel these are essential to any wardrobe (and you can go as simple or as
embellished as you like, depending on your personal style) because they are
classic and will last for several seasons if you take good care of them. I also
like the versatility they offer as they are great to wear with jeans and a
blazer for a night out on the town, or you can wear them in a more business like
setting and still feel appropriate. I tend to gravitate toward simple styles
when looking for black pumps, but I did some searching to give you a head start
if you would like to add a classic black pump to your own wardrobe. All of my
picks are under $150 and you can click on any photo for more information (there
are two pages, so be sure to scroll over to view all of my picks).

CLOSET ESSENTIALS: THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

It's been awhile since I've done a "Closet Essentials" post, my apologies! So
far I've covered two of my essential items, the blazer and denim, and today I
wanted to talk about the little black dress.

Honestly, everyone should have at least ONE little black dress in their closet
that they feel great in and can reach for anytime they need to dress up (I even
had my bridesmaids wear black dresses in my wedding - I think a LBD is classic
and looks good on everyone). The little black dress, in my opinion, is the
dressy equivalent to denim (perfect for almost any occasion!!) and you all know
how I love my jeans. I personally have two little black dresses hanging in my
closet that I love, the first is a tank dress (that can be dressed up or down,
which is fantastic) that I bought last summer at Gap, and the second is a DVF
wrap dress that I purchased a few years ago on super sale (one of the best
purchases I've made - it's a classic piece that will never go out of style).
Unfortunately both of the dresses I own (pictured below) are no longer
available, but I've found a similar tank dress here or here (thanks Michelle!)
and two wrap dress options here and here.

When shopping for a little black dress, I tend to gravitate toward classic
shapes/styles that I know will last more than just a season or two. I've
compiled a selection of great little black dresses (all under $150) to help give
you a jumping off point if you're in search of one to add to your own closet.
Many of these are simple, in keeping with my own personal style, but I did try
to include some with interesting but subtle detailing to give the LBD a bit of a
punch while still keeping it classic. Click on any photo below to purchase/get
more information.

CLOSET ESSENTIALS: DENIM

For the next installment of my Closet Essentials feature, I thought I would
discuss the #1 most important thing in my own wardrobe...denim. I love jeans,
and since I don't have to dress up for my job, I get to wear jeans pretty much
every day. Because they are such an essential part of my wardrobe, I don't mind
spending money on designer jeans (I've also had better luck with designer denim
lasting longer!). Don't get me wrong, I absolutely have some less expensive
pairs, but I'm not afraid to spend a little more because my cost per wear is so
low (but definitely always search around for sales/codes - I almost never buy
jeans full price!).

With so many styles of denim out there right now, there is something for
everyone. I have several different types of jeans on rotation in my closet, and
here are my personal favorites (as always, click on any photo to purchase or for
more information!)...

One of my favorite type of jeans for every day wear are bootcut jeans like these
Laurel Canyons by Paige Premium Denim. I have these jeans in three different
washes and I love them because they're comfortable, they don't stretch out, and
they're the perfect length for me. (I tend to prefer a dark wash for my denim
because I think it makes them more versatile, but it all depends on your
personal preference as to what washes work best for you!)

Here are some more great bootcut denim options at various price points:

Another type of jean that is essential in my closet is the straight/skinny jean.
I have the Morgan skinny (although I think of these as being more straight leg
because they aren't super skinny in the leg) from Delias which I LOVE and wear
often. I also have a pair of skinny jeans that I like to tuck into boots from
American Eagle, and a pair from Martin and Osa. I like to pair skinny jeans with
a longer top/tunic/or sweater and boots/flats/heels. (Note: AE jeans tend to
stretch out, so if you can't try on in the store I recommend sizing down one!)
When I first bought a pair of skinny jeans, I wasn't 100% convinced I could pull
them off but wanted some jeans to tuck into boots, so I didn't spend a lot of
money (all three brands have held up well, although the AE jeans tend to stretch
out quickly).

Here are some more skinny/straight alternatives:

The last category of denim in my closet are various types of "specialty denim"
like boyfriend jeans, denim leggings (I refuse to call them jeggings!!), trouser
jeans, and of course - denim shorts.

Here are some more options:
Here are some ways I like to wear my "essential" denim!
